For eighty years now, ISPI and its Researchers have been witnesses, analysts and commentators of international events in Italy. Many scholars have worked in its library, many statesmen have spoken in its halls and many young diplomats and civil servants have learned in ISPI’s lecture theatres the job that now takes them all over the world.

It was thanks to Milan’s major entrepreneurs that ISPI was created in the early 1930s, not only as a centre for research but also as a means for the entrepreneurial classes to be updated with what was going on in the world.

And so it has remained - a centre for independent thought, unaffected by pressure from either the Government or Business, despite the fact that it has been created by latter. During the Second World War, for example, ISPI publications made it possible for Italians to read the allied war bulletins - which, otherwise, they would have been obliged to try to listen to furtively at night, with the fear of being detected.

Today ISPI, like many other Think Tanks in the world, is confronted with new challenges. In all branches of activity, civil society has to face a growing number of choices at the international level. It has become increasingly important to be intellectually and professionally ready to keep up with the lightning speed of information, opportunities and interests which we call globalisation. ISPI is devoted to this task, not only through academic study of international politics and economics, but also by making accessible these complex developments to a wider audience at home and abroad and to the business world in particular.

Here at ISPI, a dynamic group of people - academics, scholars, experts and young researchers - works together to offer a valuable service. As a team, they realise the importance of their task and of ISPI’s ongoing role in national and international life.

The Institute

ISPI’s research is divided into 14 programmes on specific geopolitical areas or cross-cutting themes • Africa• Caucasus and Central Asia• Disarmament• East Asia• Economic Governance• Emergencies and Humanitarian Affairs• Energy Security• Europe• Human Rights• Latin America (Argentina and Brazil)• Mediterranean and the Middle East• Russia and Eastern Neighbours• Security and Strategic Studies• South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran)

A scientific committee, consisting of the directors of a number of leading international affairs institutes outside Italy, helps define research guidelines.Scientific contributions are provided not only by resident senior and PhD-level researchers but also by other think tanks and universities that form a network with ISPI. These include SWP in Germany, IFRI in France, Chatham House, Warwick University, and Aberdeen University in the UK, EPC and CEPS in Belgium, the Shanghai Institute for International Studies, in China, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., MGIMO, RAS and the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Moscow, the Indian Council of World Affairs in New Delhi, the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, the Foreign Policy Institute in Ankara, Turkey, etc.

Research

Founded in 1934 on the initiative of a group of companies and scholars, ISPI is the oldest and most comprehensive Italian think tank. The vocation of the Institute is to spread awareness and broaden the understanding of international politics and economics, strategic studies, and the history of international relations through activities targeted to political leaders, the business community, academics, diplomats and civil servants/advisors from international institutions and NGOs. ISPI’s activities range from coordinating and carrying out policy-oriented research and analysis on global

and regional issues to publication of same to providing a high-level forum for successive discussion and debate. In addition, ISPI acts as the main non-academic training centre in Italy for young men and women wishing to work in the international sphere.ISPI’s work is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach, guaranteed by its close collaboration with specialists (not only academic) in economic, political, historical and strategic studies, and its broad international network, including think tanks and universities from all over the world. ISPI also promotes many initiatives in close cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

ISPI produces a series of publications, most of which are openly available online:• ISPI Dossier, a newsletter offering wide coverage of current affairs and in-depth analysis carried out by scholars and outstanding experts, providing solid backgrounds and scenarios• ISPI Studies, monographs focusing on issues of specific interest, aimed both at disseminating the results of ISPI research and at advising policymakers• Scenario reports and ad hoc briefs, offering deeper insight into specific issues, mainly upon request of business, academic, and political institutions

• Volumes providing extensive research on topics of general interest, such as the “yearbook on Italian Foreign Policy”, focusing on Italy’s role on the global scene. All ISPI publications are equipped with videos, maps and infographics, providing the reader with additional information on the topics addressed.ISPI’s approach has always been pragmatic: many initiatives/studies are conducted on the specific request of public or private bodies, including the EU Commission/Parliament, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Parliament, local authorities, and large private companies. In particular, within the framework of the “International Political Watch”, ISPI provides ongoing input and policy recommendations to the lawmakers of the Italian Senate and Chamber of Deputies.

Events

ISPI has a flourishing programme of events, enabling top figures from business, industry, finance and government, together with academics, journalists and the public as a whole, to hear eminent speakers and exchange views on key international issues. Each year the Institute promotes over 100 events in different formats, involving over 300 speakers and 20,000 participants:• International conferences and seminars in cooperation with foreign research institutes;• Bilateral dialogue forums with Argentina, Egypt, France, Germany, Russia, and Switzerland, promoted in cooperation with the respective ministries of foreign affairs and with the involvement of policy makers and top representatives of major companies from both Italy

and its partner countries;• Instant events and multi-part meetings investigating and commenting on current themes on the world stage;• Information-providing initiatives for specialist au-diences, such as the “Executive Briefings” project, which consists of briefings and closed-door meetings addressed to executives of Italian companies and institutions that are largely focused on internationalization. • Career days aimed at students and young professionals wishing to embark on international careers;• Book presentations and debates with international authors. These events are held both within ISPI’s premises (Palazzo Clerici) and at other prestigious locations, in Italy and abroad.

hours each), allowing participants to understand some major international themes every year: cooperation, humanitarian aid, European affairs, human rights, etc. All the courses include both direct lessons and the perspective of officers from the field, who offer case studies, simulations, and role playing. ISPI also offers diplomas in International Cooperation and Development, Humanitarian Emergencies, Microfinance, and European Affairs. In terms of the latter, ISPI also offers a preparatory course for the EPSO competition that selects the permanent staff of European Union institutions. Since 2008, the Institute has also offered Advanced Diplomas: intensive programmes in English aimed mainly at professionals or others who have already gained experience in international domains. The Advanced Diplomas are realised in collaboration with national and international bodies and institutions such as the International Institute of Humanitarian Law and ECES (European Centre for Electoral Support) and are available in: Project Cycle Management, Management of Humanitarian Interventions, International Humanitarian

Law and Peace Operations, Effective Electoral Assistance, and Fundraising. They include distance learning modules.

Professional DiplomasProfessional Diplomas are tailored for those enterprises or legal firms that operate internationally and that are interested in deepening their knowledge of the economic, legal, and political aspects of BRIC countries (Brasil, Russia, India, China). In 2012, ISPI has launched “Focus Russia”, which offered a comprehensive overview of the economic and legal system of that country. Since 2013 “Focus India” has also been available, thus expanding the training offer for small and medium enterprises with particular interest in those two BRICs.

Other training initiativesThrough the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ISPI offers training courses for Italian diplomats (Delegation secretaries and Counsellors) and foreign diplomats from Iraq, yemen, Palestine, Pacific Island countries, and other states.

ISPI School

With over 1,700 participants, two master’s degree programmes, and 70 short courses and professional diplomas targeted to young students and selected audiences (from Italian and foreign diplomats to managers and school teachers) every year, ISPI is the leading Italian non-academic training centre specialising in international affairs. Moreover, ISPI makes the biggest contribution in Italy to training tomorrow’s diplomats (over 20% of those admitted to diplomatic careers in the last five years were from ISPI), as well as young people wishing to work in international organisations, both governmental and non-governmental. The ISPI faculty makes great use not only of international scholars but also of international officials and NGO operators, so as to guarantee a sound interdisciplinary approach for each course, combining theory and case analysis, group work and simulations, with the backing of researchers and academics.

Master’s degreesThe ISPI master’s degrees are one-year programmes for graduates. They originate from the Institute’s experience

in training for diplomatic careers and international positions, which started in the late 1950s.ISPI currently offers students two master’s degrees:• Master in Diplomacy for young graduates who wish to prepare for the Italian Foreign Office competitive diplomatic exam; • Master in International Cooperation (Development & Emergencies) for those who want to acquire the tools needed for managing development projects, understanding humanitarian emergencies, and acquiring techniques to operate effectively in the field of international cooperation. The faculty comprises both Italian and foreign academics and experts from international and non-governmental organisations. They alternate workshops, case studies, and teamwork with classroom lectures and a Study Tour abroad.

Winter & Summer Schools, Diplomas, Advanced DiplomasSince 2000, ISPI has run Winter & Summer Schools, a series of approximately 80 short courses per year (15

Once owned by a member of the Visconti family, in 1635 Palazzo Clerici was bought by Giorgio Clerici, who came from a family of silk merchants and bankers from the Lake Como area. The Clerici family’s period of greatest splendour is associated with Giorgio Antonio Clerici, who was responsible for the enlargement and artistic decoration of the palace. He was admitted to the Milanese patricianship in 1739 and was elected one of the sixty decurions (senators) of the city. Unfortunately the great expenses Marquis Clerici incurred in furnishing and decorating the mansion, together with the enormous sums needed to carry out his duties, obliged him to resort to heavy loans.Upon his death, the palace was used as a residence by the imperial family while Palazzo Reale was being built, then subdivided into various lots and rented out. In 1860, it passed into Italian State ownership and became the seat of the State Auditor’s Department. In 1941, it was entrusted to ISPI as a home for its cultural activities. Since then, the Institute has made Palazzo Clerici a theatre for some of the most intense periods of Milan’s cultural life, as well as a symbol of the city’s marked international outlook.

The frescoesAfter arranging the restoration of his residence, Giorgio Antonio Clerici wished to celebrate his family’s social ascent by enlisting the services of the major artists of the age. Working together with highly skilled carvers, decorators and cabinet makers, these artists helped to create a sumptuous atmosphere.Pietro Maggi, Mattia Bortoloni and Giovanni Borroni painted some of the rooms with allegorical and mythological scenes that represented the height of 18th century art in Lombardy. To crown the renovation work, in 1741 Clerici invited the famous Venetian artist Giambattista Tiepolo to paint one of the halls on the main floor. The resulting fresco depicts the course of Apollo the sun god’s chariot through a sky studded with Olympian deities and surrounded by earthly creatures, personifications of the arts and animals symbolising the four continents known at that time (Africa, America, Asia, and Europe). It is a grandiose allegory that praises Maria Teresa’s enlightened despotism and glorifying Giorgio Antonio’s artistic patronage.
