はじめに

Dear all

When you enter in the Building No.2, you can see the writing, Catholic Jesuit

Center on the left side of the door. It shows well that Sophia University is a

Catholic and Jesuit University.

This Center provides opportunities to study about Christianity not only

to the students and faculty/staff members, but also to those who are

concerned with Sophia School Corporation. Through Bible Studies,

Campus Ministry, Retreats, Pilgrimages, and various activities, this Center

desires to enrich your daily life experiences through Christian thoughts.

We also organize liturgies and gatherings, such as Entrance Ceremony

mass, Commencement Service Ceremony, Sophia Founding Day, and Sophia

Memorial Day. Further more, we are hosting Easter Vigil Holy mass and

Christmas mass according to the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church.

All of you are free to attend any of those activities. Therefore, you are

welcome to the Catholic Jesuit Center at Building No.2!

皆さま

2 号館エントランスを左に入ると、“Catholic Jesuit Center”の文字が目

に入ってきます。上智大学が「カトリック大学」“Catholic University”で

あり「イエズス会大学」（Jesuit University）であることをよく示しています。

このセンターは上智大学で学生生活を送る学生や教職員のみならず、学校

法人上智学院の設置校の関係者の皆さんに、キリスト教について学ぶことが

できる場を提供しています。聖書研究会、対話集会、黙想会、巡礼など、様々

な企画を通して、キリスト教に触れ、日々の生活に潤いを与え、豊かにして

いくことができるようにというのがこのセンターの願いです。

また、大学行事に伴うミサや感謝の集い（入学式、卒業式、先哲祭、物故

者追悼の日など）や、カトリック教会の典礼暦に沿って、復活祭やクリスマ

スのミサなどを行っています。どなたでも参加できますので、こうした機会

にぜひキリスト教に触れていただきたいと思います。

Sophia University and the Society of Jesus

Sophia University was established in 1913 by the Society of Jesus, and

St.Ignatius church, that ajoins it, is also administrated by the same Society.

The Society of Jesus is a male religious order affiliated to the Roman

Catholic Church, and its founder was St. Ignatius de Loyola. He had 6

companions including St. Francis Xavier. The fact that Xavier in 1549

introduced Christianity for the first time in Japan is well known, but since

then he had been nurturing hope to establish a university in the capital

city of Japan, that would rival the universities of Europe. This dream of

his was realized after the lapse of around 400 years, in Sophia University.

We celebrate December 3rd annually at Sophia University, as a day in

commemoration of Xavier.

上智大学とイエズス会

上智大学は 1913 年にイエズス会によって創立されました。上智大学に隣接

する聖イグナチオ教会も、イエズス会が運営しています。イエズス会はロー

マ ･ カトリック教会に属する男子修道会の一つで、創立者は聖イグナチオ・デ・

ロヨラです。彼には聖フランシスコ・ザビエルを含む 6 人の同志がいました。

ザビエルが 1549 年日本に初めてキリスト教を伝えたことは良く知られてい

ますが、彼はその時から、日本の都に大学を創りたいという望みを持ってい

ました。その夢が 400 年という年月を経て上智大学として実現したのです。

上智大学では、毎年 12 月 3 日をザビエルの日として祝います。

Xavier and Ignatius

▶ St. Ignatius de LoyolaIgnatius de Loyola was born in 1491 in the castle of Loyola situated in

the Basque region of northern Spain. He is a founding father of Sophia

University and a founder of the society of Jesus, a male religious order of

the Roman Catholic Church. The Spiritual Exercises he authored serves as

the base of the spirituality of the Jesuits, as well as the principal focus of

Jesuits education. In August 15, 1534, on the feast of the Assumption of

the Blessed Virgin Mary, within a small chapel located at the foot of a hill

in Montmartre, Ignatius along with six companions made their vows, and

this signaled the birth of the Society of Jesus. The vows they took were to

lead lives of holy poverty in imitation of Christ, to exert themselves for the

service of others, to lead lives of chastity, to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem,

and to dedicate their lives for the spiritual guidance of their neighbors. It

is Ignatius’s concept of serving others even at the risk of sacrificing oneself,

that has come to constitute the founding spirit of Sophia University.

▶ St. Francis XavierXavier also was a Jesuit. In 1549(the 18th year of Tenbun), he arrived in the

Satsuma country(in the west of Kagoshima ), he visited Hirato, Yamaguchi,

and Kyoto, and introduced Christianity to Japan. His stay in Japan was

for around two years, and he informed the people of Europe about the

wisdom of the Japanese and primacy of their culture. Since he desired that

a university be established within the capital of Japan, in 1908 three Jesuits

arrived in the country under orders of His Holiness the Pope, and this led

to the founding of Sophia University.

ザビエルとイグナチオ

▶聖イグナチオ・デ・ロヨラ

イグナチオは 1491 年スペインの北部バスク地方にあるロヨラ城で生まれま

した。

イグナチオ・デ・ロヨラは上智大学の設立母体であり、ローマ・カトリック

教会に属する男子修道会であるイエズス会の創立者の一人で、イグナチオが

著した『霊操（心霊修行）』はイエズス会の精神基盤となり、学校教育の基本

方針となりました。イグナチオと 6 人の同志は 1534 年 8 月 15 日、聖母マ

リアの被昇天の祝日にモンマルトルの丘のふもとにある小さな聖堂で誓願を

たてました。これがイエズス会の誕生でした。ここでの誓願は、キリストに

ならって清貧のうちに生き、隣人のために尽くすこと、貞操を守り、エルサ

レムに巡礼し、自分たちの生涯を人々の霊的指導に捧げることでした。イグ

ナチオの自分を犠牲にしても他人に奉仕するという思想こそ、上智大学の建

学の精神として受け継がれています。

▶聖フランシスコ・ザビエル

ザビエルもまたイエズス会の一員で、1549年（天文18年）、薩摩の国（鹿児島

西部）に上陸しました。平戸、山口、京都などを訪れ、キリスト教を日本に紹

介し、滞在は 2 年ほどでしたが、日本人の聡明さ、文化の高さをヨーロッパ

に知らしめました。ザビエルが、｢日本の都に大学を｣ と願ったことがきっか

けで、1908 年に 3 人のイエズス会員が教皇の命で来日し、上智大学を設立

することになりました。

September, 1540 His holiness Pope Paul III approves the establishment

of the society of Jesus.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola becomes first Superior

General.

October, 1903 Father Joseph Dahlmann, SJ who played an important

role in the establishment of Sophia University, comes

to Japan for an academic prospection.

July, 1905 Father Dahlmann, SJ reports to His holiness Pope

Pius X about his prospections in Japan.

August, 1906 His holiness Pope Pius X asks to the society of Jesus

to establish a catholic university in Japan.

April, 1913 Opening of Sophia University.

February 25, 1981 Saint Pope John Paul II visits Sophia University.

March, 2013 Inauguration of ministry of His holiness Pope Francis

(the first Jesuit to become the Pope).

September 25, 2013 His holiness Pope Francis receives in audience a

delegation of Sophia University.

December 18, 2017 “Let’s Speak to Pope Francis”, Sophia students had

a conversation with His holiness Pope via video

streaming.

November 26, 2019 His holiness Pope Francis visits Sophia University.

ローマ教皇と上智大学

1540 年 9 月 教皇パウロ 3 世が上智大学の設立母体であるイエズス会

設立を認可。イエズス会の初代総長に聖イグナチオ・デ・

ロヨラ就任。

1903年10月 本学の設立に重要な役割を果たしたヨゼフ・ダールマン

神父が学術調査のため初来日。

1905年7月 ヨゼフ・ダールマン神父が日本で見聞したことを教皇ピ

オ 10 世に報告。

1906年8月 教皇ピオ 10 世はイエズス会に対し、日本でのカトリッ

ク大学の設立を要請。

1913年4月 上智大学開校

1981年2月25日 聖ヨハネ・パウロ 2 世教皇来校

2013年3月 教皇フランシスコ就任（イエズス会出身）

2013年9月25日 本学使節団が教皇フランシスコに謁見

2017年12月18日 映像回線を通じた「教皇フランシスコと話そう」開催

Chapels

▶ KulturheimKulturheim is located in the center of campus next to SJ House (the Jesuit

community residence). It is the oldest building on campus and is a favorite

place for many graduates to hold their wedding ceremonies.

▶ Catholic Jesuit Center Chapel (9:00-17:00)This chapel is located inside the Catholic Jesuit Center (1F, Bldg. 2) and

can be used any time when the center is open. Please come to pray between

classes or for a time of reflection.

▶ St. Ignatius ChurchSt. Ignatius Church is a Jesuit-founded church next to the University.

Entrance Mass and Commencement Service is held at the Main chapel of

this church.

12:40～13:20 The Greatest Salesman in the World or The Little Prince（Japanese/English)Rudolf Plott SJWhat is the success of life? Why don't we read together the books which changed my vision of life? ① "The Greatest Salesman in the world: Nine declarations that make life a success", a masterpiece of an American writer Og Mandino, who was a representative of Success Unlimited Magazine Company until 1976. The total sales was 50 million books. Mandino's first half of life was a series of failure and discouragement. He couldn't go to college due to family circumstances, he worked in a factory, he served in World War II, he suffered depression, he attempted suicide, he became alcoholic, he divorced. As he overcome various challenges and changed his way of thinking, he knew the true joy of life and the great success. ② "Little prince", a profound master piece of a french writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, which is often misunderstood as a fairytale. I recommend this piece to those who are worried about the future, those who don't know what he/she is living for, and those who cannot feel joy.

「Bib カフェ」という名前で、毎週くばられる絵付きのパンフレットをつかっています。「お茶をのんで、みんなで読んで、3 分考えて／祈ってみる」をしています。ただしみんなでしゃべっている間に終わってしまうことも多々です。どうぞ。（「上智社会福祉専門学校」の学生が多いです。）

We are a Sophia University student group for Catholics and those interested

in Catholicism. We aim to carry forward the Catholic identity of Sophia

University through mutual enlightenment, development of faith in each

member, and other various activities.

Our main activities are the following.

Ⅰ. Interaction among students interested in Catholicism.

Ⅱ. Offering information to students who want to learn about Christianity.

Ⅲ. Coordinating university-hosted Catholic liturgies such as Easter,

Christmas, Entrance Mass.

Ⅳ. Circle activities such as special Masses, summer camp, and Liturgy

Sophia Choir

Since its foundation in 1961, Sophia Choir has served on various occasions

with hymns, including Friday lunch time Mass at Kulturheim. We have

two concerts every year as well as a charity concert at Hotel New Otani,

and we also sing in school events such as commencement and entrance

ceremonies.

“Hymn” is not something very special. They are songs of prayers, and as we

find singing and praying as part of our lives, hymns are also close to us.

We welcome Catholics, non-Catholics and those without previous

experience in singing. We have members with various backgrounds. Come

sing with us!

上智聖歌隊は、1961 年に創立されてから今日に至るまで、様々な形で歌の

奉仕をしてきました。

現在では毎週金曜日にクルトゥルハイムで開かれるミサの他、年に 2 回のコ

ンサート、ホテルニューオータニでのチャリティコンサートに加え、学位授

与式や入学式といった大学行事などにも参加させていただいています。

｢聖歌｣ に何か特別なものを感じる方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、そん

なことはありません。聖歌は ｢祈りの歌｣ であり、歌うことも、祈ることも、

私たちにとっては身近なものであるように、｢聖歌｣ もずっと身近にあるもの

だと思います。

▶ "Meguko" -Action for the self-Reliance of Children in Asia-Since its establishment in 1975, over the past 40 years, we have been

providing opportunities for education to children in India and the

Philippines. We hold bazaars at the rest space by the Building No. 8 and do

street fund raising activities at the Yotsuya station. Through activities such

as charity concerts held every year in December, we have been soliciting

donations. We visit local supporting facilities in India and the Philippines

every other year in August.

What is Sophia Campus Ministry: MAG+S Program?

University is a time to search for meaning, to go beyond the face value

of daily events. Enrooted in the Catholic and Jesuit spirituality, Sophia

University's mission is to form ''Men and Women for Others, with Others''.

As an international university, Sophia is a place for learning, research and

growth. In such a context, Campus Ministry through MAG+S Program provides an opportunity for students to enhance their faith and spirituality

and find greater meaning to their lives. Sophia Campus Ministry is an

opened space to students of all religious traditions and those who may not

belong to a church, synagogue, mosque or temple but want to explore their

relationship with God in community with other students.

Campus ministry involves fun, prayer, conversation, a good meal together

to connect and spend time with each other to discuss how faith is a strength and resource in the struggle of the frantic pace and demands

of a student. Our mission is also to complete projects with the homeless,

refugees, Ecology and working with the poor at various sites in Japan and

outside Japan.

教などの宗教的背景を持つ学生や、どこにも属さない場合であっても学生の

ISLF（Ignatian Student Leadership Forum）研修プログラム

▶ ISLF 海外版：2 年に一度 JCAP（Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific）主催

ISLF 研修プログラム海外版は、毎回アジア各国を舞台にアジア太平洋地域（イ

ンドネシア、フィリピン、台湾、マカオ、香港、カンボジア、東ティモール、

ミクロネシア、オーストラリア、日本）のイエズス会高校の学生の代表が集

い、Ignatian Leadership について学ぶ国際会議です。上智学院設置校の設

立母体であるイエズス会の創立者聖イグナチオ・デ・ロヨラの霊性（イグナ

チオ的教授法、霊操）に沿って、体験的・活動的プログラムを通して、イエ

ス・キリストが示した和解（愛と赦し）によって生まれる平和や調和、そし

てリーダーシップを養うことが目的です。毎回テーマを決めて、それを元に、

自分たちの国が抱えている問題を発表し、具体的な問題から見えてくること

と向き合い、分かち合いをします。また、国内外のイエズス会姉妹校の仲間

との議論や交流を通じて友情の絆を深めます。日本からは栄光学園、六甲学院、

広島学院、上智福岡の高校生が集い、学生ヘルパーとしてこれら四校の卒業

生や上智大学生も参加します。使用言語は英語です。2018 年夏には秦野キャ

ンパスを利用して、日本で初めて開催されました。

▶ ISLF workshop overseas among Asia Pacific Region :Held once in two years. Hosted by JCAP.

ISLF is an international workshop which brings together delegates of Jesuit Secondary Schools' students from the Asia Pacific Region (Indonesia,

Philippines, Taiwan, Macao, Hong Kong, Cambodia, East Timor,

Micronesia, Australia, Japan) in term to learn about Ignatian Leadership

which is based on Ignatian Spirituality. The purpose of this workshop is to

train students the Ignatian leadership through experiences and activities

related to the founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius de Loyola

(Ignatian Pedagogy, Spiritual Exercises). So that, they can be able to show

peace and harmony aroused by reconciliation (love and forgiveness) from

Jesus Christ. Students chose themes, and accordingly, by presenting each

countries’ current issues, they face their circumstances, have discussions

and share their point of views. Also, they deepen their companionships

among the Jesuit Secondary High School students in and out of Japan. The

students from the four Jesuit Secondary High Schools from Japan, Eiko

Gakuen, Rokko Gakuin, Hiroshima Gakuin, and Sophia Fukuoka join,

and the graduates from these

four schools and the students

from Sophia University join the

workshop together as student

helpers. In summer 2018, ISLF

workshop was held in Japan for

the first time.

Campus Ministry

In our Chapel, facing the beautiful Mt. Fuji and being watched by the

blessed virgin Mary, we hold a monthly birthday’ mass for Students who are

celebrating their birthday that month. During the entrance and graduate

ceremonies, we also celebrate mass together with parents, guarantors.

During Christmas, together with some helpers, we decorate the interior of

the school and make some Christmas performances. We provide a place to

those who want to read bible individually during lunch break. In this way,

we expect to continue with the transmission of Sophia and Catholic spirit.

美しい富士山をのぞむ聖堂では、聖母子像に見守られながら、毎月、誕生日

を祝うミサを学生のために行っています。入学式や卒業式は保護者も一緒に

ミサにあずかります。クリスマスには、ヘルパーたちと準備をして校内を飾り、

クリスマスの劇も行います。ごく少数ですが、個人的に聖書を読みたいとい

う人には、昼休みの時間を利用してバイブルスタディを行っています。これ

からも、このように上智のカトリック精神を伝えていきます。
