Brief CTU introduction

• Founded in 1966• A multi-disciplinary university in the Mekong

Delta and one of 14 leading universities in Vietnam

• Training programs: 78 undergraduates (40,000 regular and in-service students), 28 Master (2,600) and 7 Doctoral (40)

• 1,900 staff members including 1,000 teaching staff and 900 supporting staff

• Campuses (3): Campus 2 (85 hectares), Campus 1 and Campus 3

ICT infrastructure of CTU CTU campus network

• 35 fiber optic routes from Information and Network Management Center (as a central network of CTU) to other units

• More than 20 high capacity servers• 3000 PCs for staff and students, in there 1000

public access PCs• PCs/student rate: 1/13• PCs/staff rate : 1/1.25• Backbone bandwidth: 1GBps• LAN bandwidth: 100Mbps

• Internet bandwidth: – a leased line with 34 Mbps– more ADSL for public access PCs

• VinaREN-TEIN2 connection: 45 Mbps connected to most of institutions in the world

• WiFi network covered whole Campus 2 since April 2010. Staff/students using WiFi through a particular authentication account

E-learning at CTUOverview

• Dokeos is a web-based e-learning system, technically known as a LMS (Learning Management System)

• Dokeos could be set up on various platforms such as MS. Windows, Ubuntu, Linux…

• Lecturers could use Dokeos to: – Manage uploaded files– Interact with students through discussion forums– Organize working group – Build exercises as self-tests,…

=> An attractive online learning environment

E-learning at CTUOverview

• Dokeos e-learning system established in 2004 as a learning management system

• The system has – 14.000 users, in there 250 lecturers– 300 courses have been created on e-learning

system to support teaching/learning (blended or references) with 75 English courses

• All users as CTU’s staff or students must log in to be used through an authentication account (LDAP server)

• E-learning system (Dokeos) could– support to educate through credit system applied at

CTU– help CTU in offering more chances of study for

people in the Mekong Delta region as a new channel of learning

• As a whole, the e-learning system contributes to improvement of education quality at the university

• E-learning, as a mean, had enhanced cooperation chances with other institutions (e.g. ViFINET, Kemi-Tornio, NSS)

VOCW Deployment at CTU

• More than 50 courses that were developed by CTU lecturers uploaded to VOCW website

• CTU organized two training days to introduce VOCW for CTU lecturers with 100 participants

• One server sponsored by VEF located at CTU with address http://vocw.ctu.edu.vn/ as caching server

• CTU homepage also made a link to VOCW website to aim to disseminate it to staff and students

• Advantages, disadvantages, policies,... for developing and maintaining VOCW website (discuss on 7 May)

Experience of CTU

• Firstly, rectorate is pioneers in applying ICT in education, scientific research and management

• Secondly, rectorate has proposed policies to encourage lecturers in applying ICT to support teaching work

• Thirdly, Financial sources have been effectively invested and used to improve ICT of the university (government, cooperation, internal sources)

• Fourthly, modern technologies, especially ICT, have been priority deployed

• Lastly but really important, CTU staff, especially technicians work enthusiastically, not fearful of hardship

Plan for 2010 and next years

• 100% staff (including lecturers and researchers) have own PC

• PC/student rate: 1/10• Internet connection (leased line): 45Mbps• 100% class rooms will be equipped

projectors• Establishing a modern data center to store all

digitalized data of CTU• Completing integration information system

to serve management work of the university

Plan for 2010 and next years

• 100% courses will be digitalized to be available on the university network

• 20% courses will be uploaded to e-learning system for teaching/learning and a part shared on VOCW

• Producing multimedia materials for online teaching/learning

• Establishing an online testing center, along with a question bank for at least 20% courses

• Applying distance education through e-learning

Plan for 2010 and next years

• Using video conferencing as a mean to enhance cooperation with institutions, locally or aboard

• Teaching through using video conference for in-service training (a project implementing with Kemi-Tornio University, Finland )

• Cooperation with institutions to invite leading professors to teach using video conference
