S aint Peter’s Healthcare System has introduced a new service and expanded an established one to meet the healthcare needs of those living in the flourishing community of Monroe and its surrounding towns. With more active adult communities being built and new families moving in, Saint Peter’s Healthcare System opened a Wound Care Center ® and Hyperbaric Services and relocated its Comprehensive Care Group this month in a new facility at the Clearbrook Commons Medical and Professional Office Park, 294 Applegarth Road, Monroe Township. A new wound care center A new state-of-the-art wound care center equipped with hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers will be located on the second floor. Like The Wound Care Center ® and Hyperbaric Services located in Saint Peter’s Center for Ambulatory Resources in New Brunswick, a team of doctors skilled in surgical and non-surgical techniques will treat hard-to-heal wounds. When necessary, they will prescribe treatment in hyperbaric oxygen therapy tanks housed in the Applegarth Road facility. The multidisciplinary team of board certified physicians includes general surgeons, vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, internists, geriatricians, infectious disease specialists, physiatrists (specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation), and clinical wound specialists. The team formulates a personalized treatment plan for each patient who suffers from wounds caused by either venous and arterial disease; constant pressure on the skin (pressure ulcers or bed sores); osteomyelitis; radiation damage from cancer treatment; compromised skin grafts, flaps and replants; or re-opened surgical wounds, as well as other problem wounds. Saint Peter’s first in area to use oxygen therapy Saint Peter’s is the first hospital to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) services in the Monroe area. HBOT increases the amount of oxygen in the blood so damaged tissue is nourished and can begin to repair itself. This cutting-edge technology helps control infection and enhances blood vessel formation. During hyperbaric (high pressure) oxygen treatments, patients recline in a special chamber that is filled with 100 percent oxygen at two to three times normal air pressure. While in the chamber patients also breathe in the oxygen through masks. It is the high concentration of oxygen delivered right to the bloodstream through the mask that accelerates healing. The clear chambers, made of acrylic, are equipped with bedding so patients can lay comfortably and watch flat-screen televisions in the room or even sleep. During treatment the patient is closely monitored by a hyperbaric medicine techni- cian who works with the patient’s wound care physician and nurse to assure safety and effectiveness of the care received. “There is a huge need for comprehensive wound care in the Monroe area,” says Margaret Moss, program director for the Wound Care Center ® and Hyperbaric Services at Saint Peter’s. Aging is a significant risk factor for problematic wounds, she explains, adding that Monroe-area residents include 61,000 people age 60 and older, roughly 7,000 of whom are living with diabetes. Diabetes compromises healing due to its damage to the blood and nerve vessels in the feet. Comprehensive primary care expands The Saint Peter’s University Hospital’s Comprehensive Care Group (CCG), originally located in the Pondview Plaza for more than 15 years, has expanded and relocated its practice to the new Applegarth Road facility. Saint Peter’s physicians will continue to provide primary care for adults 18 years and older at the Comprehensive Care Group at Monroe. Access to primary care is believed to be the hallmark of preventive care. At a time when studies show it is increasingly difficult to find primary care physicians, Saint Peter’s Healthcare System continues to extend its services beyond the borders of its New Brunswick-based hospital, says Renee DiMarzio, administrative director, Department of Medicine at Saint Peter’s. In addition to its primary care services including internal medicine, geriatrics, prevention and wellness, the Comprehensive Care Group at Monroe provides the following specialized services offered by physicians affiliated with Saint Peter’s University Hospital: • Breast Health and • Cardiac Care Surgery • EKGs and • Diabetes and Echocardiograms Thyroid Care • General Surgery • Gastroenterology • Rheumatology • Pulmonary Services • Podiatry • Urology An open house at the new facility is scheduled for Wednesday, October 24, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 294 Applegarth Road. Saint Peter’s Healthcare System has introduced a new service and expanded an established one to meet the

healthcare needs of those living in the flourishing community of Monroe and its surrounding towns. With more active adult communities being built and new families moving in, Saint Peter’s Healthcare System opened a Wound Care Center® and Hyperbaric Services and relocated its Comprehensive Care Group this month in a new facility at the Clearbrook Commons Medical and Professional Office Park, 294 Applegarth Road, Monroe Township.

A new wound care centerA new state-of-the-art wound care center equipped with hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers will be located on the second floor. Like The Wound Care Center® and Hyperbaric Services located in Saint Peter’s Center for Ambulatory Resources in New Brunswick, a team of doctors skilled in surgical and non-surgical techniques will treat hard-to-heal wounds.

Saint Peter’s first in area to use oxygen therapySaint Peter’s is the first hospital to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) services in the Monroe area. HBOT increases the amount of oxygen in the blood so damaged tissue is nourished and can begin to repair itself. This cutting-edge technology helps control infection and enhances blood vessel formation. During hyperbaric (high pressure) oxygen treatments, patients recline in a special chamber that is filled with 100 percent oxygen at two to three times normal

air pressure. During treatment the patient is closely monitored by a hyperbaric medicine techni-cian who works with the patient’s wound care physician and nurse to assure safety and effectiveness of the care received.

“There is a huge need for comprehensive wound care in the Monroe area,” says Margaret Moss, program director for the Wound Care Center® and Hyperbaric Services at Saint Peter’s. Aging is a significant risk factor for problematic wounds, she explains, adding that Monroe-area residents include 61,000 people age 60 and older, roughly 7,000 of whom are living with diabetes. Diabetes compromises healing due to its damage to the blood and nerve vessels in the feet.

Comprehensive primary care expandsThe Saint Peter’s University Hospital’s Comprehensive Care Group (CCG), originally located in the Pondview Plaza for more than 15 years, has expanded and relocated its practice to the new Applegarth Road facility. Saint Peter’s physicians will continue to provide primary care for adults 18 years and older at the Comprehensive Care Group at Monroe.

Access to primary care is believed to be the

hallmark of preventive care. At a time when studies show it is increasingly difficult to find primary care physicians, Saint Peter’s Healthcare System continues to extend its services beyond the borders of its New Brunswick-based hospital, says Renee DiMarzio, administrative director, Department of Medicine at Saint Peter’s.

In addition to its primary care services including internal medicine, geriatrics, prevention and wellness, the Comprehensive Care Group at Monroe provides the following specialized services offered by physicians affiliated with Saint Peter’s University Hospital:

• Breast Health and • Cardiac Care Surgery • EKGs and• Diabetes and Echocardiograms Thyroid Care • General Surgery• Gastroenterology • Rheumatology • Pulmonary Services • Podiatry • Urology

An open house at the new facility is scheduled for Wednesday, October 24, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 294 Applegarth Road.
