October 8, 2017 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time HIGHLY PASSIONATE

The tales of the vineyard in Isaiah and in Matthew point to the larger story of God and

God’s people. We see that God is intensely passionate about us. God is deeply committed, like the landowner who diligently prepares the vineyard. God has high expectations that the vineyard pro-duce the fruit of a just and compassionate society. God is highly disappointed and angry that the vineyard has produced bad fruit (Isaiah), or has been treated as a prize to be seized (Matthew).

There are more chapters in the larger story that also need to be told. Later in Isaiah and in Matthew, we see that God is also deeply compassionate and forgiving. Isaiah speaks of God’s ten-der care, as a mother loves her child (Isaiah 49). In Matthew, Jesus demonstrates God’s for-giveness most dramatically on the cross. God is indeed most patient and resilient. God never gives up on us. God continues to pursue us, offering us love and grace, now and always. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Before long, as we’ve seen, the four newly constructed Eucharistic Prayers became two. The old Roman Canon faded away into relative disuse after 1600 unbroken years, sometimes heard only at Christmas Midnight Mass or the Easter Vigil. The new Eucharistic Prayer IV, at least in its English form, grates a bit on most hearers, and besides is meant only for Ordinary Time. The reconstruction of the ancient prayer of Hippolytus, Eucharistic Prayer II, is the most familiar, but its brevity sometimes creates an imbalance with the Liturgy of the Word. No wonder that as soon as the creative juices began to flow at the Vatican, people worldwide were trying their hands at new prayers. In 1967, even before the final shape of the new Mass was announced, bishops were asking to adapt that celebration for the needs of children. They wanted to clarify what ought to happen when large numbers of children are at Mass: what could be adapted, omitted, or shortened. Experimentation had already begun. Separate Liturgies of the Word for children were by this time commonplace in Holland and elsewhere in Europe. Catechists were saying that many of our liturgical forms were too complex for the children in their charge, and priests were making adaptations on their own. Clearly, the Vatican had to take this seriously. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. DIOCESAN CONSECRATION AND CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF FATIMA: In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima, Bishop Zubik will consecrate the Diocese of Pittsburgh to the Mother of God on Friday, October 13th at St. Paul’s Seminary. Faithful are warmly invited to participate in this historic event. The evening begins with a picnic-style dinner at 5:00 PM (online ticket purchase only at https://tinyurl.com/fatimapgh100) and concludes with a candlelight Eucharistic procession (weather permitting) and consecration ceremony beginning at 7:00 PM. No registration is required to attend the procession and consecration. Cost of dinner is $10/adult, $5/child (age 6-12) and FREE for children under five. Dinner and a free will offering benefit Maternidad de Maria, our diocesan mission and clinic for families experiencing poverty in Chimbote, Peru. NATIONAL CONFERENCE TO MARK 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CATHOLIC CATECHISM: To celebrate the silver jubilee of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Franciscan University of Steubenville will sponsor the Speaking the Truth in Love Conference, October 13–15th. The conference will explore how priests, parents, & religious educators can more fully utilize the Catechism as a powerful tool to transmit the faith and assist in the renewal of Catholic culture. Conference speakers include Cardinal Donald Wuerl; Archbishop Leonard Blair; and Dr. Scott Hahn. The conference price is $90, which includes all sessions, two lunches, and a banquet dinner. To register or for more info, visit Catechetics.com/events, email [email protected] or call 740.283.6754. 2018 WEDDINGS ARRANGEMENTS: at St. Patr ick (and St. Alphonsus) must be made with Fr. Ben at least six months prior to the wedding date.

COLLEGE DISCERNMENT NIGHT BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT: Come to discern how the Lord is calling you to serve Him and to learn more about the priesthood at the College Discernment Night, held Monday, October 23rd from 5:45 PM to 8:30 PM at St. Paul Seminary. The evening will include Evening Prayer, a talk by Father Mike Ackerman, adoration, dinner, and a bonfire. All college and post-college men are welcome. To register , email [email protected]. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY: In two weeks, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Each year, the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the poorest of the poor. This year, we are invited to “Chat with the Pope” to learn more about his missions. Scan this year’s World Mission Sunday poster using Facebook Messenger for your mobile device, or learn more at ChatWithThePope.org. PRODUCE GOOD FRUIT: Today’s readings are focused around the image of a vineyard. A vine grower works hard to cultivate the soil and tends the vines in order that they may produce good fruit. As Christians we are called, with the help of God, to tend to our hearts that they may be fertile and produce the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control – in abundance. On Mission for The Church Alive! seeks to make our parishes and ministries vibrant and effective seedbeds where God’s gifts can be nourished and nurtured and more bountiful fruit can be produced. Don’t wait to prepare your heart for the good work God wants to accomplish through you. Ready yourself for the changes that are ahead and for the good spiritual fruit you can produce to strengthen the Church. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. SICK LIST: Your prayers are requested for Gabr iel J . Belak, Richard Grzegorczyk, James Harshman, Rosalyn (Belak) Heleniak, Gabby Holtz, Joe Rasch, Adeline Slovick, and Joe Swider. Please pray also for those in hospitals, nursing homes, and at home.
