But for some of the squad, the season is un- likely to get much more hair-raising than later this month when they undertake a waxing evening. At least five players have signed up for the tor- ture that is a leg wax or, for the braver ones, a back wax! The purpose for such dubi- ous entertainment is to raise funds for the local church, St Thomas’ in Cowick Street, Exeter, where the clergy and congregation are currently raising funds to enable vital restoration works to be carried out. The church needs to find a some or plenty of rugby play- ing experience, and details of where and when you can play can be found at: www.o2touch.rfu.com There will be a formal launch, hopefully in the City Centre, and details will be available in due course. Meanwhile, more details about the youth section can be found the club’s website at: www.wessexrfc.co.uk With the Rugby World Cup coming to Exeter next year, Wessex want to be in a posi- tion to take advantage of any opportunities that will arise, and believe that working to- gether with their local part- ners will enable them to meet expectations. The chosen, or ‘volun- teered’ members, will start the waxing at 7.00 pm on Sat- urday, October 18, at The Royal Oak in Okehampton Street, Exeter, which acts as their clubhouse, and where ‘mine hosts’ Mark Aggett and Sadie Evan, are hosting the evening. The ‘entertainment’ will be followed by a race night, and the evening, which is open to all, should be full of fun… if not a little pain. As a club Wessex see the event as a perfect opportu- nity to gain awareness not only of the church appeal but also of the rugby club’s stand- ing in local community. But they still would like to hear from anyone interested in playing competitive rugby as one of the club’s objectives is to have regular second- team fixtures. That cannot be achieved without more players who can make themselves regu- larly available so that Wessex can fulfil a commitment to other clubs. Meanwhile officials are in talks with the local council, the RFU and education estab- lishments to review and im- prove the playing facilities at the delightfully-named Flow- erpot Fields. An ambitious club, they want to provide a rugby expe- rience for all ages and abili- ties, and are fully committed to improving their ground and amenities. As well as their senior League side, Wessex are now in their second season of pro- moting youth rugby and will soon be in a position to play fixtures at under-sevens, eights and nines age-group levels. However, to keep the mo- mentum going they need to attract more players, coaches and volunteer. The junior section cur- rently trains at Flowerpot Fields every Sunday morn- ing, from 11.00 am, where all potential members – no pre- vious rugby playing experi- ence is required – will be made most welcome. The club is currently re- porting success with the O2 ‘Touch’ programme for Ex- eter.
