THIS WEEK AT THE CENTER… NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 12, 2018
St. Stephen of Hungary
Saint of the Day for August 16 (975 - August 15, 1038)
The Church is universal, but its expression is always affected—for good or ill—by local cul-ture. There are no “generic” Christians; there are Mexican Christians, Polish Christians, Filipino Christians. This fact is evident in the life of Stephen, national hero and spiritual patron of Hungary. Born a pagan, he was baptized around the age of 10, together with his father, chief of the Magyars, a group who migrated to the Danube area in the ninth century. At 20, he married Gisela, sister to the future emperor, Saint Henry. When he succeeded his father, Stephen adopted a policy of Christianization of the country for both political and religious reasons. He suppressed a series of revolts by pagan nobles and welded the Magyars into a strong national group. He asked the pope to provide for the Church’s organization in Hungary—and also requested that the pope con-fer the title of king upon him. He was crowned on Christmas day in 1001. Stephen established a system of tithes to support churches and pastors and to relieve the poor. Out of every 10 towns one had to build a church and support a priest. He abolished pagan customs with a certain amount of violence, and commanded all to marry, except clergy and religious. He was easily accessible to all, especially the poor. In 1031, his son Emeric died, and the rest of Stephen’s days were embittered by controversy over his successor. His nephews attempted to kill him. He died in 1038 and was canonized, along with his son, in 1083. Reflection: God’s gift of holiness is a Chr istlike love of God and humanity. Love must sometimes bear a stern countenance for the sake of ultimate good. Christ attacked hypocrites among the Pharisees, but died forgiving them. Paul excommunicated the incestuous man at Corinth “that his spirit may be saved.” Some Christians fought the Crusades with noble zeal, in spite of the unworthy motives of others. Today, after senseless wars, and with a deeper understanding of the complex nature of human motives, we shrink from any use of violence—physical or “silent.” This wholesome development continues as people debate whether it is possible for a Christian to be an absolute pacifist or whether evil must sometimes be repelled by force www.franciscanmedia.org

Breaking Bread Homeless Ministries
News From The Streets…
An Invitation By Mary Martha Primerano What does love look like? I see a reminder of love every time I walk into our church. Jesus on the cross and right behind the raised cross is a large portrait of Resurrected Jesus with his arms wide open. This portrait is so comforting and inviting. But if we’re not careful the cares of this life will cause us to lose sight of Him. Thinking we can handle whatever troubles that come our way alone without crying out to Him for help. But this is faulty thinking. The enemy would love for us to be isolated and alone, and if we choose this we will find our-selves growing cold, or distant to the things of God. There’s even a warning found in Revelations 2:4 concerning this: “Yet I hold this against you. You have lost your first love.” Don’t lose your first love and reach out to the hurting around you. People are hurting all around us. Just be there for them, give them the help they need, lift them up and encourage them, and don’t forget to invite them to church where they will be surrounded with other believers. Revelation 3:20 – “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” A simple invitation to church could be Jesus knocking at the door of our hearts. The Breaking Bread team got to see this play out during ministry a couple of weeks ago. The offer to attend church with us went out to our homeless friends, and we got a re-sponse, ‘yes, I’ll go!’ - We quickly found some nice clothing from our donations and presented them to our guest. One team member graciously brought our friend to church the next morning, where he felt God’s love displayed. We followed the service with an invitation to lunch and while there we discovered that it was his birthday which made the lunch even more special! Our guest also shared that he was a veteran with PTS, and has been self medicating himself for this for a long time. We were able to minister to him, pray, and encourage him to find more help. I know PTS is real and effects may of our veteran’s family and friends. Contin-ue to pray for anyone you know hurt by this trauma because God loves them very much.

Y O S OY EL PA N V IVO QUE HA BAJADO
D EL C IELO
Juan 6,41-51.
