Stewardship Thoughts “…for whoever exalts himself will be humbled,

and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” - LUKE 17:18 -

Pride and ego is the root cause of most of our sins. Thinking your time is so valuable, your talent is better than anyone else and your money gives you status is another way of making those things “gods” before God. Remember all those gifts were God-given. Instead we should be humbled by God’s abundant generosity and our hearts should be filled with gratitude. . Children’s good deed: “I helped my teacher straighten the classroom; I picked up my toys and put them away; I went to bed nicely.”

Tend thy sick ones, O Lord Jesus. Rest thy weary ones. Bless thy dying ones. Soothe thy suffering ones. Pity thy afflicted ones. Shield thy joyous ones. And all for thy love’s sake. (St. Augustine)

May we pray for our beloved deceased, especially Phil Hennig. May they rest in peace and may God comfort those who mourn.

Our Story of Faith Loving Father, I come to you in thanksgiving, knowing that all I am and all that I have is a gift from you. In faith and love, help me to do your will. I am listening, Lord God. Speak your words into the depth of my soul that I may hear you clearly. I offer to you this day all the facets of my life, whether at home, at work or at school - to be patient, to be merciful, to be generous and to be holy. Give me the wisdom and insight to understand your will for me and the fervor to fulfill my good intentions. I offer my gifts of time, talent and possessions to you as a true act of faith, to reflect my love for you and my neighbor. Help me to reach out to others as you, my God, have reached out to me. Amen. (The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal)

The Lord hears the cry of the poor. (Psalm 34)

Page 3: October 23rd, 2016 23... · October 23rd, 2016 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time “I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled,

From Fr. Kevin… This Sunday’s mass readings contrast on the one hand

the proper interior disposition for effective prayer and

on the other hand, an improper disposition for prayer. In

the first reading from Sirach, the writer states that “The

prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest

till it reaches its goal”; also, in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus

presents a tax collector who stands “off at a distance

and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his

breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’

These are examples of effective prayer: Prayer that

touches the heart of God. Yet, in Luke’s gospel, we also

hear of a Pharisee whose attempt at prayer falls like a

lead balloon to the ground. In fact, we hear that “The

Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to

himself”. He is not even speaking to God. He sounds

more like an actor reciting a Shakespearean soliloquy.

He is convinced of his own holiness, despises everyone

else, and rattles off his ‘resume’ of good deeds in the

temple area. We are reminded in today’s psalm for mass

that “The Lord hears the cry of the poor”, “The Lord is

close to the broken hearted and those who are crushed

in spirit He saves”. St. Paul states in today’s second

reading from 2 Timothy that “the Lord stood by me and

gave me strength”. In Psalm 51, the psalm writer

reminds us that “a humble, contrite heart, O God, you

will not spurn”. A humble heart is heard by God. God

wants our prayer to be answered. Pride is one of the

seven capital sins, and it creates a type of spiritual

blindness and spiritual deafness within us. Is there an

area of pride in my life that God is inviting me to repent

of? Peace, Fr. Kevin

The 2016-2017 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal encourages everyone to make a gift to help others. The goal of the 2016-2017 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is $3.5 million. Your generosity enlivens every facet of parish life. A gift to the Archbishop’s Appeal ensures that the sacramental life of the church reaches more people and the message of the Gospel touches more hearts. These are the financial goals/pledges to date for our parishes:

St. Patrick’s of Tekamah Goal $5,146;/Pledged $2,515 Holy Family of Decatur Goal $2,306/ Pledged $1130

FAITH FACT October – The Month of the Rosary

The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer. It begins with the Apostles’ Creed, which summarizes the great mysteries of the Catholic faith. The Our Father, which introduces each mystery, is from the Gospels. The first part of the Hail Mary is the angel’s words announcing Christ’s birth and Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary. St. Pius V officially added the second part of the Hail Mary. The Mysteries of the Rosary center on the events of Christ’s life. There are four sets of Mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and – added by Pope John Paul II in 2002 - the Luminous.

. The Lighter Side . A pizza delivery boy arrived at a house to drop off an order. The

customer asked, “What is your usual tip?” “Well,” replied the boy, “the other guys say if I get a quarter out of you I’ll be doing great.” “Is that so?” the customer snorted. “Well, just to show them how wrong they are, here’s $5.” “Thanks, I’ll put this in my school fund.” “What are you studying?” “Applied psychology.”
