Industry Dynamics: A Short Glance
Large investments in 2019: The world's largest insect farm at Protix in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands
was opened on June 11, 2019. Aquafeed manufacturer Skretting commits to serving 5.5 million salmon
with Protix' insect meal incorporated into the feed. In France, insect producer Ynsect announced it had
been awarded a €20 million grant from the European Commission and a €3.7 billion European public-
private partnership to build an industrial-size facility. The new facility will enable Ynsect to multiply its
current production capacity by 50-times. Malaysia-based agri-food tech firm Nutrition Technologies is
expected to build biggest insect protein plant in Southeast Asia. The announcement was following the
recently conclusion of a Series A funding round. The new plant will produce over 18,000 tones of insect-
based feed ingredients and organic fertilizers every year.
ASF and global meat outlook: Setbacks and revives
The spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) with its impacts on production, consumption and trade,
represents the most significant factor currently shaping the world meat market outlook for 2019.
World meat output in 2019 is forecast to drop by 0.2 percent to nearly 337 million tons, first declined
since 1996. Spread of the disease is largely behind the foreseen contraction of 4 percent in world pig
meat output, and contributes to the 2.8% anticipated increase in global poultry meat output. The impact
on bovine and ovine meats production is limited, with
both forecast to expand by less than 1%. In China, a 5%
contraction of total meat output is expected, with at
least a decline of 10% for pig meat and an expansion of
4.85% for poultry meat. In Australia, it will witness a small
decrease due to the slaughtering of sheep under drought
weather. Expansions are anticipated in all the major meat
producing countries, especially the United States of
America, Brazil, Mexico, India, the European Union (EU), the
Russian Federation and Pakistan.
Trade is forecast to increase 4.8% to 35 million tons in
2019, fueled by an expected sharp rise in imports by China.
Across the various meat types, world trade is forecast to
expand by more than 8 percent in the case of pig meat,
and by close to 4 percent in the case of poultry and 4
percent for bovine meat. China will rise its meat import by 20%, with an increase of 26%, 23% and 15%
for pig meat, poultry meat, bovine meat respectively. Elsewhere, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Viet Nam
and the Russian Federation are also expected to step up their meat purchases. The expected expansion
in world import demand is forecast to be largely met by increased exports from Brazil, the EU, the United

Aquaculture and new ingredients
Global aquaculture production in 2019 is forecasted to reach 86.5 million tons, a continued growth of 4%. Supply remains limited for
some species, such as salmon and bivalves, but in other markets, such as shrimp, seabass and seabream, plentiful supply is pushing
prices down. Utilization of fish in feed, for example fish meal, is expected to declined by 14.2%. For aquaculture producers, while several
species are currently well supplied, a recognition of long-term demand trends will continue to drive investment and research into

30 seafood companies were listed on Seafood Stewardship Index 2019. The Seafood Stewardship Index (SSI) was launched by the
World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) to describe the effects of seafood companies in the world on their commitments, transparency
and performance to meet the United Nations' (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It gives a non-biased assessment of the
operations of aquaculture companies from five areas: Governance and management of stewardship practices; Stewardship of the
supply chain; Ecosystems; Human rights and working conditions; Local communities. Top 10 companies ranking on the list include: Thai
Union Group, Mowi, Charoen Pokphand Foods, BioMar Group, Nueva Pescanova, Cargill Aqua Nutrition, Nutreco (Skretting), Mitsubishi
Corporation (Cermaq), Parlevliet & Van der Plas, and Austevoll Seafood ASA.
Insect for feed market is growing faster. Edible insects for animal feed market is estimated to reach US$ 267.9 million by the end of
2018 in terms of value, and is forecasted to reach US$ 2385.6 million by the end of 2029. Key players in this sector include EnviroFlight,
LLC, Ynsect, AgriProtein Holdings Ltd, Enterra Feed Corporation, Protix, Entomotech S.L., Kreca Ento-Feed BV, DeliBugs, Haocheng
Mealworms Inc, Entomo Farm, NextProtein, Beta Hatch, Nutrition Technologies, Hexafly Biotech, Entobel, HiProMine, InnovaFeed, Nusect,
Protenga, and Mutatec. In 2018, companies producing edible insects for animal feed received the largest investment. They are UK-
based AgriProtein, Dutch Protix, and the French company InnovaFeed and Ynsect, which produce mealworm in France, etc. (Source:

US pork export rebound in May, both volume and value reach 2019 highs. Pork exports totaled 217,999 metric tons (mt) in May,
steady with last year’s pace, while value increased 1% to $567.8 million – the highest monthly value total since April 2018. For January
through May, pork exports were still 4% below last year in volume (1.035 million mt) and down 10% in value to $2.57 billion.
From January to May, US pork export showed increase to Colombia, Chile and Peru in South America, achieved double-digit growth
in Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, while Honduras still its leading import market in Central America. Exports to
Oceania continue to climb, increasing 45% in volume (52,502 mt) and 30% in value ($138.7 million) from a year ago, achieving
significantly high result in both Australia and New Zealand markets. Rebound in Japan and China/Hong Kong offset slower pork

Ruminant: Greenhouse gas emission reduction solutions to address climate change challenge
As the global population grows from 7 billion in 2010 to a projected 9.8 billion in 2050, and incomes grow across the developing
world, overall food demand is projected to increase by more than 50%, and demand for animal-based foods by nearly 70%. Across
the various species, demand for ruminant meat is projected to grow by 88%.
The world generated 49.1Gt greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2010, of which energy sources (industry, buildings, transport)
accounted for 64%, agriculture and associated land-use change such as deforestation accounted for nearly one-quarter. Agriculture
has not been a major focus of emissions mitigation, other than as a potential source of carbon sequestration in soils. Yet farming
is a significant and growing source of emissions. Agricultural production emissions occur primarily in the form of methane and
nitrous oxide—trace but powerful GHGs—generated by microorganisms in ruminant stomachs, soils, and manure slurries. Ruminant
livestock—cows, buffalo, sheep, and goats—generate nearly half of all production-related.
To limit agriculture to its “fair share” of total allowable emissions in a world where global temperatures have risen by 2 degrees
Celsius, the agriculture sector must address the demand for 50 percent more food while reducing emissions by two-thirds from 2010
levels, and by 2050, the 20 percent of the world’s population who are high ruminant-meat consumers should reduce their average
consumption by 40 percent, or the ruminant supply chain should change the way it produces.
The potential solutions to reduce GHG emissions from ruminant production that listed on its WRI's actions menu are: Develop and
deploy feed additives (such as 3-nitrooxypropan) to reduce methane releases from ruminant animals; Use and advance different
technologies to reduce emissions from the management of manure in concentrated ruminant production systems; Develop and
deploy nitrification inhibitors (spread on pastures and/or fed to animals) and/or breed biological nitrogen inhibition traits into

Key players: Commitments to sustainability
Cargill announced BeefUp Sustainability Initiative on July 24. It committed to a 30 percent greenhouse gas
emissions reduction target across its North American beef supply chain by 2030 from a 2017 baseline. The
initiative will focus on four key areas: grazing management, feed production, innovation and food waste
reduction. The 30% reduction builds on the industry’s existing GHG efficiency efforts and will equate to
removing 2 million cars from U.S. highways for a year.
CPF is transitioning towards stress-free farms for animal welfare and healthier food. About 67.3% sow farms
of CPF in Thailand and 14.9% overseas will switch from individual stalls to group gestation pens in 2019 to
give the sows freedom to move and interact. The global transition will be completed by 2028. For layers,
cage-free housing is being piloted in Thailand, with the first batch of production from Wang Somboon farm
in Saraburi province being started in March 2019. Abroad, the company is implementing cage-free layer
farms in Taiwan and Cambodia at 12 and 50% of their production capacities, respectively.
12 Agri technologies worth investing for future
World Resource Institute lists 10 existing and emerging technologies on the menu of solution to feed nearly
10 billion people by 2050: plant-based meat-making; food preservation technologies; feeds to reduce a
cow’s methane emissions; compounds to keep nitrogen in the soil; nitrogen-absorbing crops; rice that
emits less methane; the gene-editing of crops; higher yield palm oil; algae-based fish feeds; solar-powered
fertilizers. In addition to that, two most promising technologies that receive large investment recent years
are: insect technology and cell-based meat culturing.

The winners of the coveted innovation awards were announced during Victam
International, the feed industry trade show, taking place June 12-14, 2019 in Cologne,
Germany.
The Animal Feed & Nutrition Awards are awarded to the most economical, innovative
and revered equipment/ingredient/additive/process or service in the feed industry.
The winning product must be new and can make a significant contribution to the
manufacture of animal feed in terms of innovation, efficiency, profitability, safety or
sustainability. An independent panel of judges determined the winners from approved
applications for product innovations, based on stringent criteria.
FAMSUN won the award for its SWFL170 Vertical Pulverizer with the impressive energy
efficiency and productivity. The particle size reduction machine is designed with
unique convex cover and aspiration system to diminish resistance during grading and
discharging, which helps to avoid over-grinding and reduce power consumption. And
thanks to the innovative guiding-to-grind technology, the output of the pulverizer is
increased by 20-40%, by compared to the older equipment. The machine is designed
for aquatic feed production, including but not limited to the feed production for fishes,
shrimps, crabs and turtles.
FAMSUN at Victam International 2019
As one of the world's largest dedicated events for the animal feed processing industries,
Victam International 2019 attracted about 2,500 visitors worldwide. The integrated
solution provider FAMSUN showed its farm-to-table solutions from grain storage to feed
milling, animal farming as well as oilseed processing at the largest booth in the hall.
FAMSUN also was invited to share its latest extrusion technologies that help to boost
efficiency, safety and sustainability in auqafeed production at the 2019 Aquafeed
Horizons Conference, represented by Rob Strathman, the President of FAMSUN-USA
Design & Engineering. It was the third time that Rob made presentation at Aquafeed
Horizons Conference.
In the past few months, FAMSUN, as an important
participant and builder of local food security
systems, had joined the governments to make in-
depth insights into future challenges, pool wisdom
to discuss the affordable technical solutions and
innovations in creating a sustainable food future in
China and Africa.
Global population is expected to reach 9.8 billion
by 2050, up from 7 billion in 2010. There will be
56% food gap, nearly 600-million hectare land
gap, and 11-gigation greenhouse gas mitigation
gap existing between what was in 2010 and that
expected in 2050 for a sustainable food future.
Millions of farmers, companies, consumers and
every government on the planet, will have to make
changes to meet the global food challenge, and
the food system at every level must be linked to
climate strategies as well as ecosystem protections
and economic prosperity.
Events in China
Today, China feeds 20% of the world's population
on 7% of the world's farmlands. To accomplish this
feat, China paid a heavy price and facing harmful
soil, water and air states in the past. It is urgent
that China proactively consider how to achieve food security through
a balance of resource management, environmental protection and
sustainable agricultural development.
"Technologies and innovations can help to make possible changes in
reducing resource inputs, food waste, and increasing food productivity,"
FAMSUN Vice President said at the 2019 China National Grain
Technology "The 14th Five-Year Plan" Seminar that organized by the
China National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration during the
China Grain-Tech Week, taking place on May19-26 in Nanjing, China.
Grain storage silos, dryers, conveyers and other handling machines
that used after grain harvest and before distribution could prevent
waste and keep grain in good quality for a longer time comparing to
traditional sunshine drying and household storage. Leading processing
technologies could improve nutrition value, increase productivity,

Active in Africa
As an important local food security system participant and builder, FAMSUN has been active in Africa to transfer technologies,
develop experience, and expand cooperation in order to help more and more local people enjoy food security, nutrition and healthy
life.
This year it was invited to attend The Belt and Road Dialogue for China-Africa Cooperation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on May 30. The
dialogue was jointly held by the Mission of the People's Republic of China to the African Union and the African Union Commission.
Dignitaries from China government, AUC, and representatives from RECs, diplomatic corps, international organizations, businesses,
think tanks and media presented at the dialogue.
The first session of the dialogue was chaired by Mrs. Treasure Maphanga, former Director of the Department of Trade and Industry
of AUC. Mr. Li Xiangdong, the General Manger of FAMSUN Egypt Industry S.A.E., had in-depth discussions on the topic of trade
cooperation at the dialogue, he also shared "Chinese Experience" in safeguarding food security, and introduced the achievements
that FAMSUN had made with local partners along the agriculture value chain.
"We are very proud that the business we doing here is related to food system that nourishing people in Africa", Li said. "FAMSUN will
continue to work with local and international partners to overcome future food challenges."
The 2019 Bangladesh Aquafeed Technology Symposium and Training Course, co-organized
by Worldfish Bangladesh and the integrated solution provider FAMSUN, was held at
FAMSUN's headquarters from June 25 to 27. Twenty two representatives from 20 reputed
Bangladesh feed companies had broaden their understanding and experience in aquafeed
production in China.
Schedule of this event included courses and workshop tours. The participants were able
to review presentations carried out by experts from FAMSUN R&D, application and service
team, and management directors and nutritionist from China famous feed mills.

Attendees were also able to learn how the parts and machines such as ring die, screws,
extruder, dryer, etc. are manufactured, fabricated and well packaged for transport in
FAMSUN's workshops, and how they are well integrated into a system that could achieve
production objectives in feed mills.
The feed mill tour on the last day led to two famous plants: Jiangsu Yuehai Feed Co.—the
largest aquafeed mill in Asia, and Tiancheng Feed—the latest smart feed mill in China. The
former is of a production capacity of 110 tons per hour, while the later is of 90 t/h capacity
and is distinguished in supply chain management.
It was the second time that Worldfish Bangladesh and FAMSUN cooperated with each other
to delivered such knowledgeable event. This series event has achieved great technology
improvement for Bangladesh aquafeed industry, and will further benefit millions of people
who depend on fish for food and aquaculture for livelihoods there.

Focus on aquafeed processing technologies
and market trends of seafood processing and
export in Vietnam.
FAMSUN, a technical provider of integrated
optimal solutions along the farm-to-table
supply chain, recently organized a seminar on
the latest aquafeed processing technologies to
100 attendees from 45 industrial key players on
July 18, 2019 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Vietnam is an important aquaculture market
in the world. The country saw an increase of
nearly 1 million metric tons of aquaculture
feed, contributing to the estimated 6% growth
of the Asia-Pacific region’s aquaculture feed
production in 2018.
Prior to presentations, a video of the largest
aquafeed mill by capacity in Southeast Asia—
the 60 t/h aquafeed mill project that FAMSUN
delivered to SAO MAI in Vietnam—was
displayed and showcased its impact on the
market. Chris Liu, FAMSUN Representative in
Vietnam hosted the seminar and introduced
the company's business in Vietnam and
International market.
The International Feed Industry Federation
(IFIF) and the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
held their 2019 Annual Meeting at FAO
Headquarters in Rome, Italy on October
3-4.
The meeting was officially opened by
Dr. Berhe G. Tekola, Director of the FAO
Animal Production & Health Division
and Dr. Daniel Bercovici, IFIF Chairman,
who welcomed delegates and reiterated
their commitment to this longstanding
partnership and agreed to continue to
strengthen their work together to tackle
the challenges facing the feed and food
chain.

processing and exporting status in the first
half of 2019. He also made insights into the
trends and policies of Vietnam aquaculture
market in 2020.

in aquafeed extrusion help to improve feed
quality and feed performance in aquaculture.
Rob also shared his expertise on the most
attracted shrimp feed extrusion topic, from
feed formula to processing technologies.
Presentation on the latest shrimp feed pelleting
technology was made by Dr. Li Qingkai, Vice
director of FAMSUN R&D Institute. He shared
the success stories of FAMSUN K15X shrimp
feed pellet mills in CFP Vietnam and New Hope
through recording production data.
Global feed manufacturers such as CPF, CARGILL,
MASAN ,CJ, DE HEUS, and NEOVIA who operating
feed mills in Vietnam also attended the seminar.

FAMSUN PTZL5000 Vacuum Coater on Trials:
Capacity up for Aquafeed Production ?

Field trials using several PTZL5000 Vacuum Coaters have proven their effectiveness and
have shown many product quality benefits in large-scale high-end aquafeed production.
Coating is an industrial process that uniformly applies either a liquid or a powder onto
the surface of a product of any possible shape or size to create new functional properties.
The introduction of vacuum coating systems into the aquafeed industry provided greater
flexibility for feed manufacturers to overcome product quality challenges that a typical
ambient coating system could not, such as achieving homogenous coverage at low-fat
inclusion levels, maximizing fat inclusion levels, and ensuring sufficient fat penetration that
avoids leaching of oils into the ponds.
Vacuum coating technology creates a sub-atmospheric pressure within a mixing chamber,
and then an atomized or even a molecular condensable vapor is injected into the chamber
to encapsulate each pellet with a thin film. Vacuum coating allows the application of oil,
fat, pigments, flavors, attractants, vitamins, and other liquid ingredients in this manner.
After a short mix cycle, the chamber pressure is brought back up to ambient levels. When
applicable, the dry ingredients can then be introduced. This is an important sequence, as
the oily film is often the adhesive that holds the dry powders onto feed pellets. Vacuum
coating brings improved coverge, palatability, and functionality to most feed products.
FAMSUN vacuum coaters
While making continuous improvements, FAMSUN has developed a series of vacuum
coaters with the latest innovations to meet the demanding requirements of the fast-
growing aquafeed market.
The PTZL vacuum coater (see Table 1), with excellent sealing performance, creates and
maintains a strong vacuum at a range from -950 mbar to 0 mbar and can achieve liquid
addition levels up to 36%. The vertical screw and the efficient spraying system work
together to uniformly expose the feed pellets to the atomized liquids. Also, the smooth
surface of feed contact parts and tight tolerances of the screw rotor and vessel chamber,
assure minimal wear or damage to pellets when mixing, and minimum residues when
discharging. An ABB controller ensures excellent liquid addition performance in terms of
accuracy, speed, and cycle-time. The FAMSUN PTZL vacuum coater is a flexible tool for the
production of a wide variety of high-quality products within a single production line.
The recent addition of the PTZL5000 vacuum coater into the product portfolio allows
FAMSUN to provide a whole range of coating performance from 4 t/h up to 15t/h.

Field Trials have proven a greater capacity
With a designed volume of 5,000L, the PTZL 5000 Vacuum Coaters is the perfect model for large-scale aquafeed producers. Several successful field
trials were completed in aquafeed mills by FAMSUN experts to confirm its performance. These experts optimized the batch cycle times and other
parameters of each machine and were able to achieve excellent results for customers in terms of product quality, capacity, and process stability.
Products tested were marine tilapia and linnaeus in two separate feed mills in Guangzhou Province of China this July and August. For both plants,
feed pellets were extruded from 3mm die and coated with liquid in a PTZL5000 coater after drying. The difference between the two applications
was the required liquid addition level, which was 9.3% for linnaeus and 6.4% for the tilapia feed.
For tilapia feed, the low liquid addition level did not require a vacuum, thus enabled a short total cycle time of 222s for each batch of the coating
process. The production capacity reached was 16.2 t/h.
Production trials on linnaeus feed were conducted in an aquafeed mill in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province of China, this August. The new feed
mill included six FAMSUN PTZL5000 vacuum coaters for liquid application after drying. During initial production tests, a vacuum of 700-800mbar
and a total cycle time of 273s were the target parameters to coat a 1,200kg batch of feed. The initial capacity reached was 15.7 t/h. After some
optimization, the coating time per batch was shortened to 250s, and the sustained capacity of 17.28 t/h was achieved. See Table 2 for the
commissioning parameters.

The pellets from these trials were of uniform color, illustrating excellent coverage, see Fig.2. By reaching the target fat addition levels, a product
with proper nutrition and functionality was also achieved. Due to the PTZL5000 coater's advanced capacity, feed producers can save energy and
improve production capacity. In both field trials, the PTZL5000 outperformed expectations for efficient feed production.

FAMSUN R140 Extruder: For the Humanization of Pet Food
FAMSUN introduces a pet food-exclusive extruder to help producers cater to the humanized pet care market.
Pet parents treat their fur-babies as family members and often project their lifestyles and purchasing behaviors toward their beloved cat
or dog. From vet-care, nutrition, treats, kennel boarding to grooming, toys, and even birthday parties, pet owners want their loved ones to
experience safe, happy, and healthy lives.
In 2018, undoubtedly driven in part by this humanization effect, the global pet care industry reached a value of more than 100 billion USD.
According to the American Pet Products Association, more than 67% of U.S. households include a pet, and interestingly the number of
households with pets has surpassed the number of households with children.
The population of dogs and cats is continuously growing, not only in Europe and North America but also in the emerging and developing
countries. As the middle class in developing countries expands, the adoption of dogs and cats is also quickly creating a new booming
market within these regions.
The promising pet food market
Pet food sales, the largest segment of the pet care market, reportedly grew at an average annual rate of 5.5% to 91 billion USD over the past
10 years ending in 2019 and may hit 115 billion USD by 2024, according to Euromonitor.
Worldwide production of dry pet food reportedly reached 26.63 million metric tons in 2018, rising about 1 percent above 2017 levels and
about 17.7% compared to 2015, according to Alltech's Global Feed Surveys. Production has particularly accelerated in the developing
markets of Asia-Pacific, China, Russia, Turkey, Poland, and Hungary in the past three years. Although the U.S. and Western Europe production
levels are growing at reduced rates, their total sales volumes are stilling climbing rapidly as a result of higher-priced products and
premiumization.
Pet food-only processing solutions
Due to the humanization trend, FAMSUN separated its pet food business from the feed division and consolidated it with the food division
about ten years ago. This structure change allows FAMSUN to develop and provide pet food processing solutions with the same standards
as that of human food.
Food safety, sanitary design, equipment reliability, production efficiency, and the technical elements of pet food design, such as, quality,
consistency, and taste, are all factors that FAMSUN includes when considering pet food processing solutions. R&D efforts continue to create
innovations necessary to meet the current and future processing demands of the premium pet food market.

Applications using high inclusion levels of meat slurry always introduce
excessive amounts of water that can create large agglomerations of
unevenly hydrated and cooked material in the conditioner. Therefore,
special considerations should be taken into the design of the conditioner for
processing pet food.
The FAMSUN RHP2800 (Fig.1) high-shear conditioner is such an innovation
that was developed, especially for pet food conditioning. It increases beating
times and shearing effect and avoids the agglomeration problem. The evenly
distributed water and steam in the conditioner bring consistent conditioning
results. Also, with a twin-shaft same-diameter cylinder structure with variable-
speed control, the lower-pass conditioner allows producers to change shear
and mixing levels according to formulations.

SME controller
Pet food formulations require special consideration in extruder barrels, too. Because of significant formulation differences among cat and dog
food diets, optimizing the structure of barrel and screws to meet the unique processing requirements of every product, FAMSUN has added an
SME (specific mechanical energy) controller onto the R140 Extruder. This unit enables producers to more easily control the bulk densities to their
target and provide favorable appearances that cater to pet owners' preferences.
The bulk density of pet food product is directly related to the SME input in the extruder barrel (see Fig.2 ). With an SME controller, producers no
longer need to shut down the machine for changing screws, pressure rings, or the opening area in the dies. Producers can process products in
a bulk density range of 30-60g/l without changing any other processing parameters of the machine as per the formulation. Thanks to an SME
controller, the simplified operation provides access to production automation with minimal human intervention.
Preconditioner waste control technology
Hundreds of kilos of raw material waste are generated due to a slow rise in feed temperature during each start-up of the conventional
preconditioner. This waste is discharged from a by-pass valve instead of entering into the extruder. Conditioning waste costs raw ingredients,
water (steam), energy, labor, and time. FAMSUN waste control technology can improve factory yields and resource efficiency to ensure sustainable
consumption and responsible production of pet food.
The novel conditioning technology, with high-shear conditioning, and the multi-point temperature monitoring system, can cook food mash with
high levels of meat thoroughly before it enters into the extruder. Also, the FAMSUN R140 Extruder provides preheating and heat preservation
solutions for conditioning so that the temperature of feed mash can rise to the expected level soon after the start-up. The quick-start, waste
control technology helps eliminate waste, creates a clean production environment, and is proven to be a great saver of time and labor.
Automatic control system
FAMSUN's R140 pet food extruders integrate the latest computer technologies with the latest process control hardware to give producers more
significant control over production efficiency and product quality. Highlights of the automatic control system include:
A press to start/stop: The automatic control system stores the processing parameters of the best production practice for each formulation.
When pressing the button of Auto Start, production starts automatically under a specific procedure using the optimized processing parameters
developed for each formulation. This approach allows the operator to reach the product quality targets rapidly, and then they only have to make
minor tweaks to the system from there. Then they only have to press the Auto Stop button to complete production at the end of the run.

Process parameter management: This functional module stores all parameters and run data for each production run of each formulation,
which ensures consistent product quality across the different shifts. Also, the parameter management procedure helps to eliminate the
operational differences between operators.
PWC control: This module helps achieve stable preconditioning performance for all formulations with minimal raw material waste. The data
of the best preconditioning practice is stored within this module for later recall at the beginning of each production run.
The double-PID control applied for metering ingredients brings precise control and rapid reaction for pet food production. When the
production requires a capacity of 5 t/h or less, double-PID control can help the R140 extruder reach the preset target capacity within 15s.
Elsewhere, steam and water application is controlled automatically when the output changed.
The production parameter curves are displayed on the touch screen in real-time, and historical production data can also be reviewed or
traced back by operators easily so that it is possible to make further optimization and improvements on product quality and operation
efficiency.
Food safety is always the top priority.
Pet owners and government regulators will continue to focus more and more on the safety and health of food they buy for their dogs and
cats. Mechanically and structurally, the R140 extruder is designed to meet food safety standards. All food contact parts are from stainless
steel and alloy materials with a fine finish to remove niches, and where necessary, parts are designed for quick access for thorough cleaning
to avoid food build-up and contamination.
The petfood exclusive R140 extruder has proven successful for many recent pet food projects in China. The machines installed in Anhui and
Hebei (see Fig.3 and Fig.4), for example, can produce premium- and consistent- product quality at a capacity of 5-5.5 t/h (main motor: 250kW
at 82-87% of full load).

The donation includes all equipment and accessories of a 10,000 t/y processing line, as well as all technical
supports from machine installation to processing line commissioning, operation training and production
management.
The new feed mill, named as "Fengyuan Feed Mill" with Chinese meaning of "assistance feed mill project from
FAMSUN", is located at Langan, a small village at the southern edge of Taklamakan Desert of Xinjiang Uygur
Autonomous Region of China. The warm temperate and extremely dry climate here brings only 48.2mm rainfall a
year but an evaporation of 2,450 mm. The extreme environment leaves little arable area, and farmers who depend
on agriculture for livelihood here are extreme poverty people.
FAMSUN has endeavored to provide aids to farmers in the least developed areas in China and other countries
where it doing business. The commitment it made to Langan Village is part of a targeted poverty alleviation
project that led by Xinjiang government with the aim of boosting animal farming to improve farmers' incomes.
Giving top priority to end poverty
When talking about this donation, FAMSUN Chairman Fan Tianming said: "No poverty is the first goal of UN's
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards a better world for people and our planet by 2030. We are glad to
be part of the people who can change the world and make the SDGs a reality." He also emphasized that FAMSUN
would like to provide the best of its ability and give the top priority to help end poverty everywhere in the forms
of technologies, equipment, solutions, services and other resources.
Construction of the feed mill was started on the August 1, 2019, and it was officially opened on August 20,
ten days in advance of its schedule, with both production capacity and product quality reach expected goals.
Actually, from plant layout and processing solution design, equipment manufacturing, logistics to installation,
commissioning and formally opening, FAMSUN only took a cycle of less than three months to bring the project
into being. Excellent FAMSUN engineers were appointed to ensure the project is completed as related standards
and regulations required. Their expertise also help to accelerate the investment into local economy growth.
The feed mill now can produce balanced food for multiple animal species bred in this area, such as donkeys, sheep
and geese. Mehmet Abra, a young farmer in this village talked about his animal farming expansion plan on the
opening ceremony. "Thanks to this advanced new feed mill, I have no longer worried about quality feed supply to
my livestock. " Abra said.

The largest shrimp feed mill of Skretting is on track to boost shrimp farming
in Ecuador and the neighbor countries with high-quality and responsible
produced feed products.
Taking the advantages of aquaculture resources and the good resistant
genetics of local shrimp species, Ecuador has grown to be the largest farmed
shrimp producer in the Western Hemisphere and one of the most important
shrimp exporters in the world. Shrimp farming in Ecuador is expected to reach
700,000 MT in 2021 with a CAGR of 11.3% since 2015, according to the Global
Aquaculture Alliance's GOAL 2019 survey.
The spectacular growth of Ecuador shrimp farming industry is supported very
closely by feed manufacturing industry. With local background and leading
global expertise, Skretting Ecuador is one of the feed companies that power
Ecuador shrimp farming industry at the very beginning of its development to
today's thriving.
Invest in new capacity
Committing to the fast- and sustainable growth of shrimp production
in Ecuador and the neighborhood countries, Skretting Ecuador in 2017
announced the construction plan of a new state-of-the-art, shrimp -specific
feed mill with an annual capacity of 470,000 tons in Guayaquil.
The feed mill now is being constructed in carefully planned phases. Shrimp
feed production on the four FAMSUN SJPS265 extrusion lines at the first phase
has been streamlined to the expected quality and capacity early 2019. Each line

Trails, evaluations and appraisals have proved that extruded diets is
by far the best option for moving Ecuadorian shrimp farming forward.
Extrusion has greater level of versatility and flexibility in processing
complex formula. It provides increasing potential for producers to
cut cost and reduce "fish-in, fish-out" by using more cheaper plant-
based alternatives and other new ingredients. Extruded feed, after
detoxification under high-temperature high-pressure treatment, is
safer and healthier for shrimp gut and can ensure good survival. It
also achieves higher feed conversion rate for shrimp thanks to the
favorable water stability and high starch gelatinization level. In other
words, extruded diets can help farmers produce more premium-
quality shrimp products with less feed input and fewer pressure on
environment.
Latest extrusion technologies can improve operation efficiency and
sustainability for feed producers, too. Innovative add-ons such as
density controllers installed in the new plant allow Skretting to change
production flexibly to meet the requirements of shrimp in different
growing phases. The plant currently produces shrimp feed in two sizes:
1.6mm and 1.9mm. It is possible to produce feed as small as 0.6mmn
on these lines for future market demand.

Extruded feed, the best option for moving shrimp
farming forward
Ecuador has earned a reputation as a source of safe and
sustainable shrimp on global export market, especially
after the industry launching the Sustainable Shrimp
Partnership initiative. However, competition has been
fierce in recent years. Farmers are increasingly seeking
new cost efficiencies as well as ways to grow the
industry sustainably, and feed producers have to make
innovations constantly to create new solutions and tools
to help farmers achieve their goals.
Innovation is the core of Skretting's values. The company
have make great progresses in using new and alternative
ingredients to develop clever diets that help improve the
growth, health and nutrition of shrimp while reducing
farming cost and limiting the impact of feed on farming
water as well.

Technology
Dietary Manipulation for Less Methane Output
Not only from an environmental standpoint, but also to improve
rumen function and performance of the cow, it is important to mitigate
methane production.
Methane, a product of rumen fermentation which is eructated by the
ruminant, can result in a loss equivalent to 8-10% of the energy intake of
the animal which could otherwise be utilized for productive purposes. The
following is a review of the feeding strategies that can be adopted to achieve
these targets, along with the points to consider when choosing a given
strategy.
Hay-to-concentrate ratio
A study was conducted to examine the effect of hay-to-concentrate ratios
at the same crude protein content (12%) of diet on methane production in
goats. The 5 levels of hay-to-concentrate ratios were 90 to 10 (H90), 75 to 25
(H75), 60 to 40 (H60). 45 to 55 (H45), and 30 to 70 (H30), which approximately
met maintenance energy requirements. Methane production per unit DM
intake increased with a rise in the ratio of concentrate intake to hay intake
until H45. However, the ratios of methane energy loss to ME intake were
similar. These results imply that if ME intake of goats is at a maintenance
energy level, daily methane production is not influenced by the hay-to-
concentrate ratio. In another study, lactating cows were fed 1 of the 3 levels
of roughage to concentrate ratios: 70 to 30 (R70), 50 to 50 (R50), or 30 to 70
(R30). High concentrate diet reduced both methane production per unit DM
intake and the ratio of methane energy loss to ME intake compared with low
concentrate diet. Therefore, in lactating cows, it is important to increase the
ratio of concentrate to total diet in order to reduce daily methane production
CP content of diets
Shown in Table 1 is the effect of crude protein (CP) content on methane
production in goats fed a maintenance energy level diet.
The 4 levels of CP content were:
1. 4% (CP4).
2. 7% (CP7).
3. 9% (CP9),
4. 12% (CP12).

Methane production per unit DM intake and the ratio of methane
energy loss to ME intake increased with the rise in CP content of
diets from CP4 to CP9. However, the difference between CP9 diet
and CP12 diet was not clear. These tendencies also agreed with the
results in dry cows. However, when animals were fed sufficient CP
above the maintenance energy level, daily methane production was
negatively related to daily CP intake.
Fat supplement
The addition of fat to the ruminant rations appears to be an
efficient and easy way of reducing methane production and hence
alleviating the negative effects of methane on energy efficiency,
rumen fermentation, and animal performance. The effect of fats
on methane production may, however, vary depending on the fat
source (Table 2), and may be attributed to the bio-hydrogenation of
unsaturated fatty acids in the rumen, promotion of propionic acid
production, and prevention of protozoa activity.

Potential role of the seaweeds
Seaweeds such as Ulva sp., Gigartina sp., and G. vermiculophylla are
used at the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts as feed sources for
livestock during periods of feed scarcity. This is due to their richness
in organic minerals, complex carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins,
volatile compounds, pigments, and bioactive substances with broad
biological activities. Additionally, they effectively reduce rumen
methane production without any detrimental effect on the other
rumen fermentation parameters (Table 3). The effect of seaweeds
may, however, vary depending on the substrate used. That is, the first
2 species (Ulva sp. and Gigartina sp.) are more effective in reducing
methane production when used with grass hay at 25%, while the
third (G. vermiculophylla) is effective only when used with corn silage
at the same rate.
Herbs and herbal extract
Herbs and herbal extracts such as neem (Azadirachta indica), garlic
(Allium sativum), ginger (Zingiber officinale), kadukka (Terminalia
chebula) and Amla (Emblica officinalis) contain secondary metabolites
such as lignin, tannins, terpenoids, volatile essential oils, alkaloids,
etc. They have anti-microbial activity and inhibit rumen microbial
growth in a very specific way and hence can be used for selective
amelioration of rumen fermentation especially methanogenesis.
Moreover, herbs or their extracts are unlikely to produce any residual
effects in the animal products as they are organic and have been used
for centuries by the human race without adverse effects.
Exogenous enzymes
Enzymes, such as cellulase and hemicellulase, are currently used in
ruminant diets. When properly formulated, enzymes can improve
fibre digestibility and animal productivity. Enzymes that improve fibre
digestibility typically lower the acetate-to-propionate ratio in the
rumen, ultimately reducing methane production.
Microbial feed additives and probiotics
The use of acetogenic bacteria as microbial feed additives along with
some anti-methanogenic compound may be effective in methane
inhibition. Probiotics such as yeast cultures are used to stimulate
bacterial activity in the rumen. The probiotics have been shown to
stabilise rumen pH, increase propionate levels and decrease the
amount of acetate, methane, and ammonia production.
Ionophores
Ionophores such as monensin and lasalocid, are generally used as feed additives in order to improve the efficiency of digestion in ruminants.
These ionophore antibiotics are carboxylic polyether compounds produced by various strains of Streptomyces, e.g. Monensin by S.
cinnamonensis and lasalocid by S. lasoliensis. Monensin is moderately active against gram-positive bacteria, certain mycobacteria, and coccidian,
while lasalocid is specifically active against hydrogen-producing bacteria and results in higher propionate production which in turn is related to
low methane production.
Conclusions
Several nutritional strategies have been studied and developed to mitigate enteric methane. The choice of which one to adopt should be based
on its capacity to reduce methane emissions associated with the economic viability and animal performance.
• An increasing proportion of the hay to concentrate ratio will mitigate methane production and hence improve livestock productivity but at
the same time is too costly for ruminant feed. Proper chopping of the roughage material may provide an alternative solution when the supply of
concentrate is limited.
• Another thing that needs to be considered in selecting the appropriate method to reduce methane emissions, is its effect on the livestock as
an entire system rather than only the rumen fermentation. For example, it is unwise to reduce methane production by reducing the supply of
protein, the case in which there will be negative effects on livestock productivity and health.
• Fat supplement is an interesting option but animals will reject the diet if it is too high in fat due to its inconvenient smell.
• Seaweeds have a great potential in reducing methane production, but the substrate to be used with them should be considered. Some of these
weeds can be effective when used with silage, while others are effective only when used with hay.
• Enzymes and microbial additives are effective means of mitigating methane production in the rumen.
• Ionophore antibiotics are also effective in reducing methane but the banning of such products is important to consider.

Aquafeed Tech in China:
Extrusion Leading to Sustainability
China is the global leader in aquaculture production and
aquafeed manufacturing. According to FAO, the country
produces about 50 million metric tons of aquaculture fish
(equivalent) and accounting for 60% of global production
in 2018. The prosperous industry is supported by modern
compound feed industry with 15.7 million tons of aquafeed in
2018, which holds 39% share in global aquafeed production,
according to Alltech's Global Feed Survey 2019.
Though it only saw an increase of 1 percent in production,
China aquafeed industry has been undergoing tremendous
changes in the past five years in the terms of processing
technologies, feeding species and environmental regulations,
in order to address future challenges in growing production
and sustainable development.
A technology transition is undergoing
China extrusion aquafeed market has expanded rapidly since
2015, particular in East and Central China. Production in some
feed mills even doubles in 2018. The expanding aquaculture
area drives the market to growth, however, the another factor
and the most important one is that extrusion lines are going
to take the place of pelleting lines in aquafeed processing in
order to achieve high-quality premium products.
According to a survey of FAMSUN—the China-based, global
supplier of feed machinery and plants, a total of 450-500
extrusion aquafeed lines have been installed by the end of
Extrusion aquafeed, with its advantages in processing efficiency, farming productivity, little waste and
environmental-friendly performance, is expected to have a promising future in China. The farming of
grass carp in Central China, for example, consumes about 1 million tons of feed every year, of which only
100,000 tons are produced by extrusion technology. As to the species such as crab, crucian crap, etc. that
most farming with pellet feed in East China , there is more room for growth.
Progress towards sustainable aquaculture
Billions of people in China depend on aquaculture for their livelihood and protein food resource. They
consume more fish than before as the modern aquaculture industry has grown to meet more demand.
Given its importance to the nation's economy growth and people's food security in the future, and
in order to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all people with limited resources, China
government take urgent actions to increase efforts and interventions to promote the sustainable
development of aquaculture. Most of the actions are involving in increasing productivity of farmed fish
while minimizing air, water pollution, as well as fish diseases and resources consumption.
The Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Work Plan During the 13th Five-Year Period released
at the beginning of 2017 makes clear regulation on the energy consumption of different operation
levels, from the whole country to the breakdown in provinces and businesses. High energy consumption
projects must not be approved, or the number of such projected shall be limited. Meanwhile, the Action
Plan for Prevention and Control of Water Pollution implemented since 2015 starts to get good results. In
addition, policies are introduced to reward sustainable intensification.
Starting from 2018, enterprises, institutions and other producers and business operators that discharge
taxable pollutants directly into the environment shall pay environmental protection tax, according to the
Environmental Protection Tax Law of the people's Republic of China. The law, however, also includes tax
deduction and exemption terms and conditions for operations and businesses that taking measures to
reduce their impacts on environment. For example, waste-water treatment, discharging not exceed the
national and local standards, the recirculating of water, etc.
2016 in China, with more than 230 lines in South China, and over
170 lines of which are installed in Guangdong Province. In Central
China, Hubei and Hunan provinces alone account nearly 60 lines,
and the number increased to nearly 100 lines only one year later at
the end of 2017.

2016. Additionally, as the farming of special aquatic species scaled
up to meet growing market demands, for example, the farming
of California bass in Guangdong province, yellow crocus in Fujian
province, and river crab in Jiangsu province, as well as the caryfish,
Pelteobagrus fulvidraco and Rana nigromaculata that broadly
farmed in China, aquaculture industry is in need of more extruded
aquafeed.
Mi Changyu, an extruder expert from FAMSUN who making studies
on China aquafeed market and customer demands, introduced that
most existing extrusion lines are in the capacity range of 5-10 tones,
while the new built ones usually have a larger capacity that up to
15 tones. Mi also said that, twin-screw extruders have become more
popular than single-screw extruders because of high flexibility.
Currently, the 5-tons single-screw extruder accounts for about 10%
market share, while the 5-tons twin-screw extruder accounting for
20-30%, the 10-tons for 50-60%, and 15-tons for 10%. Most new
inquiries from customers is about 10-tons extruder.

The rise in energy conservation and emission reduction as well
as environmental protection generates new needs for adaptable
innovations and solutions.
Innovate to address challenges
In China, manufacturers, suppliers and industry partners along
the aquaculture value chain are preparing to bear responsibilities
and working together to take actions. Aquafeed manufacturers
have increased investment in the treatment equipment of
exhaust gas, odor and waste water, while feed machinery
suppliers provide them more accesses to environmental
improvements.
"Both the United States and China will implement more stringent
environmental regulations in future, " said Rob Strathman, "

When he accepting an interview on China Feed Expo 2019 in
Nanning, China, in April, he described the development trends.

crayfish, pelteobagrus fulvidraco, black bass, frog, etc.

A Story about Poverty Alleviation, Economic Growth and Ecological Sustainability
An Ecological Poultry Supply Chain Program designed in 2017 has lifted more than 75,000 rural people out of poverty in Nayong County, Bijie
City, Guizhou Plateau of China.
Most of the world's poverty population are living in rural area. The situation is similar in China. In Nayong, one of the poverty-stricken counties
in the mountainous regions of Guizhou province in the southwest China, a population of 240,000 or about 27% of the total population is
poor people. The situation has improved since a native poultry industry promotion related targeted poverty alleviation program being
implemented in this area in 2017.
China's Targeted Poverty Alleviation provides tailored measures to individuals and individual households to ensure that targeted poor
population receive the assistance they need through the development of local industries, education, and healthcare. The so called "Gunshanji"
poultry program is one of such measures that designed for Nayong county by developing a full supply chain of native ecological poultry
products to meet the consumer demand of high-end market, so as to boost local economy, provide employment, and help poor people and
families out of poverty.

Leading by Guizhou Yongyuan Raw Animal Husbandry Co., a 98.3% government-owned company, the
program has attracted massive investment and business partners within two years. The project is going
to invest in a supply chain including an ecological feed mill, a native poultry breeding farm, 80 indoor
chicks farms, 1800 outdoor-raising mountain farms, a slaughtering and cold-chain logistics center, a
cooked food plant, and retail stores as well as sales networks. It targets to produce 30 million slaughtered
birds a year, and lift 75,000 people out of poverty in 2019. As the program progressing, an ecological
poultry supply chain has emerged.
A poultry ecosystem starts from safe feed
The feed mill that produces premium ecological feed for native poultry is built on an area of 200mu.
Accommodating three FAMSUN K20 pelleting lines and a 2 tones per batch powdery mixture line,
the facility is able to manufacture 300,000 tons of feed initially and can supply 15 million birds a year.
Capacity expansion is possible as local farming scale up in the future.
The 23.18m high-rise steel silo cluster includes 12 raw material silos and 8 finished product silos, the
total storage capacity is of 14,400 tons. "Most of our raw ingredients and feed products are safely kept in
the silos after receiving or before loading to bulk transport trucks," Tang Feng, the construction general
manager of feed mill and slaughtering plant introduced proudly in front of the silos. The feed mill also
provide feed in bags that processed on five bagging lines. Product bags are stacked by three FAMSUN
palletizing robots, handling capacity of each set is 750-800 bag/h.
"In order to produce safe poultry from safe feed, we apply ecological formula to produce feed, which is
mainly composed of corn, soybean meal, bran, fishmeal etc. It is free of antibiotics and drugs," Tang said.
"All the processing equipment and systems are kept in good order and are controlled by the latest plant
automation system."
According to Tang, ecological feed is the kind of feed that has the benefits of avoiding chemical residue
in downstream poultry products, namely eggs and meat, enabling the taste to be fresh and fragrant, and
further eliminating chemical residue in poultry manure, that would protect soil and water system nearby
the farms from pollution.
The feed mill is completed on schedule in March 2019, with a construction period of less than six months.
It will provide 50 job positions for trained labors from poor families.

poultry thrive
The Nayong native "Gunshanji" poultry
refers to the premium Chinese poultry
varieties: Wumeng black-bone chicken and
Weining chicken. Such poultry are raised
by nature. They are free to run, eat, rest, and
excrete as needed on the mountains and
can fully express their natural behavior from
generation to generation. The freedom
lifestyle and the healthy ecologic raising
environment contribute to their safe, healthy
and delicious qualities and make them
popular on high-end consumer market.
In order to scale up native poultry production
to boost local economy and reduce poverty,
Nayong poultry industry is carefully designed
to maintain its ecological features. Primary
breeders are carefully selected with the
assistance of breeding professors from China
Agricultural University, and parent stocks
breeding are supported by relevant national
laboratory platform. Modern incubators are
introduced to improve egg hatching quality
and efficiency. Day-old chicks are raised in
indoor farms following strictly standards
from feeding to daily care, so that they are
healthy and strong enough to grow out in
wild mountain farms after 60-day old.
The modern breeding farm for Nayong's
native Wumeng chicken is built on an area of
185 mu. It can stock 5,000 primary breeders,
125,000 parent layers, and provide 12 million
day-old chicks to indoor raising farms a year.
Slow-growing outdoor mountain farms
for better poultry health and welfare
Each occupies an individual mountain with
an investment of 600,000 RMB, the outdoor
farms are built on the mountains with an
altitude over 1,800 m. The locations are well
selected to ensure plenty space for birds to
feel free to live on their natural behaviors,
and enough distance far from other poultry
operations. These farms are nearly total
isolation. For each farm, there is only one
of China," Tang Feng said proudly. "We provide employment priority to labors from poor families in
nearby relocation sites. It will increase their family income at least by 360,000RMB a year."
Completed by the cooked and ready meal "central kitchen"
The "central kitchen" is operated by Baifengting Restaurant Chain, a company focuses on the research
of Chinese food culture, the development of popular chicken dishes, and the production of cooked
food and ready meal packaged products, as well as sales networking.
In Baifengting's "central kitchen", chefs take the advantages of Nayong native chickens to develop
various delicious dishes, such as the spicy chicken, self-heating chicken soup, mixed chicken in
chili sauce, etc. The mass-production that makes these dishes into ready-to-eat packaged foods
depending on their six cooked food processing lines. The processing capacity of this plant is 50
million birds a year.
Guo Juan, the chairwomen of Baifengting, looks positive to the future of Nayong native poultry
industry chain. "Our raw chickens are sourced from high mountain farms. They are green, healthy, and
pollution-free," Guo said."And our cooked products are innovated to response to fast pace lifestyle
that requires essential nutrients and ready-to-eat foods." The company sales their products in
supermarkets, retail stores and restaurant chain. "We also take the advantages of China's fast-growing
on-line marketplaces, e-stores, as well as express delivery businesses in order to expand our market
share and create more satisfied consumers." Guo added. Totally, the "central kitchen" cooked food
plant is able to employ more than 500 trained labors from poor families.

The largest poultry slaughtering and cold-
chain logistics center in southwest of
China
The slaughtering and cold-chain logistics
center covers on an area of 285 mu nearby
the ecological feed mill. The complex
includes independent workshop for each
slaughtering process from broiler unloading,
stunning, bleeding, scalding to plucking,
neck slitting and foot removal, evisceration
line, washing chilling, draining and freezing.
In addition, there are two quick freezing
warehouses and 3 freezing warehouses
for accommodating 1,600 tons of poultry
meat products. With streamlines and semi-
automatic production, the plant can process
30 million birds a year. Meanwhile, the cold-
chain logistics system can ensure the fresh
native poultry products keep their fresh
and nutrition to destination marketplaces,
restaurants, and consumers' homes.
Besides management team and technical
specialists, the complex can provide more
than 400 working positions in its full capacity.

Nayong's native poultry supply chain, as
a new industrial chain that designed and
supported by China's Targeted Poverty
Alleviation Program, is progressing towards
prosperity in align with United Nations'
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It
targets to end poverty hand-in-hand with
strategies that build economic growth and
address a range of social needs including
education, health, social protection, and
job opportunities, while tackling climate
change and environmental protection.
No Poverty
There is a saying in China which says it is always
better to teach a person who are hungry to fish
than to give him some fish. As of March 2019,
about 3,400 million RMB has been invested in
Nayong's native poultry program, of which 2,500
million RMB comes from the fund of National
Targeted Poverty Alleviation Program.
Different from granting cash money directly to
poor individuals and households, the capitals
are invested in the construction of feed mill,
breeding farm, slaughtering and cold-chain
logistics center, and as the supporting fund of
collective economy such as mountain farms.
These facilities and operations could create
sustainable economic growth and increase the
incomes of poor individuals and households by
providing job and other livelihood opportunities
along the poultry production chain.
Poor families covered by a specified mountain
farm could receive a bonus from every bird sold
by the farm. Households that transfer mountain
land use rights to poultry farm are subsidized
every year. They are also encouraged to plant
forage on other barren mountain lands and
sold them to biological feed mill as one of the
important ingredients. These lands used to be
wastelands because of low yield. In all forms,
Nayong's native poultry program is aiming to life
75,000 people out of poverty.
Zero Hunger
With 30 million birds a year, the barren, low-yielding
mountainous Nayong county makes new contribution
to China's food security system and helps reduce its
reliance on meat import. Front-to-end, from ecological
feed that free of drug and antibiotics, to animal-
friendly farming as well as reduced waste cold-chain
logistics and value-added cooked food production
and distribution, Nayong native poultry project
unlocks new avenues for poor mountainous areas
towards prosperity.
Good Health And Well-Being
Like young people in other rural area of China, strong labors in Nayong
used to go out and earn money in big cities. As the native poultry supply
chain developed, local economy is driven to growth and employment
is fueled, more and more young people return home to work. Their left-
behind children now are accompanied by parents in their growth and
education. And their staying elders now can obtain proper care by families.
This is important for building happy families and social well-being.
Quality Education
People who work for the native poultry industry, man
or women, young or old, are provided with professional
training on new livelihood skills, no matter which links
of the supply chain they involved in, the feed mill, farms,
processing plants, distribution center, or forge planting,
and no matter what position they work for, production,
sales, management, logistics, or other jobs.
Gender Equality
Most employees of the 80 indoor chick farms and 1,800
mountain farms will be staying woman or elders like
Luo Zhanying. This project enables women-led poultry
farming in Nayong to thrive by increasing family
incomes, creating an organized chicken production
system and building market linkages.
Clean Water And Sanitation
Nayong is reducing the burden on freshwater utilization by increasing the
efficiency of poultry supply chain. Waste water recycle and treatment measures
are implemented in industrial operations. While in outdoor farms, the application
of biological feed helps to protect the water systems nearby.

importance of environment and biodiversity conservation across all
the operations, starting from site selection, the operational sites must
not be located in conservation areas in accordance with regulations
and with no net expansion of current agriculture lands and forest. The
outdoor farms are built on barren wastelands on the mountain. There
is merely modern facilities in these farms, and biological feed for
poultry leaves no chemical in the land. Potential impacts of farming
activities are regulated, and actions are taken to conserve and restore
natural resources within and outside the operations. Poultry can enjoy
their freedom in an nature environment of improved health and
animal-welfare.
