MRM employees raise over $10,000 for the National Breast Cancer FoundationOver $10,000 has been donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation this month through the site fundraising initiative driven by our HR Advisor Chantal Guse.

We know research is the best way to prevent deaths, and improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed and treated. The foundation is working towards one goal: zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

Together we can help them get there. Donation boxes are available at the village kiosk for the month of October.

MRM is proud to support this important cause, and will be fitting one of our CAT 789 dump trucks with a pink tray at the end of October.

Glencore NewsGlencore devoted four years of hard labour and $20 million to ensure the waste rock management plan at McArthur River Mine was world class.

It was well worth the effort.

The Federal Government has given approval for the giant zinc and lead mine to continue operating until 2047.

This was followed by the Northern Territory Government approving the mine management plan.

Greg Ashe, Glencore's chief operating officer for zinc assets in Australia, told the Mining the Territory conference in Darwin that the NT Government go-ahead was an important step forward.

"We understand how important it is to get this right," he said. "It is not only important to Government - it is also important to us and it's critical for the environment and community."

The independent NT Environment Protection Authority says in its assessment of the waste rock management project that the McArthur River is in "good condition".

"Maintaining river health must be the central focus for all future stages of the mine," it says.

Gungujubina Opening

NT Chief Minister and Cabinet visit McArthur River MineMRM welcomed Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner and Cabinet to our McArthur River Mine earlier this month. They toured the mine site and heard from McArthur River Mine HSEC Manager Adam Hatfield about rehabilitation works on the McArthur River.

Chief Minister Gunner thanked our team for their efforts during Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor in March this year. Our McArthur River Mine Emergency Response Team helped in the evacuation of 922 people to Darwin as part of the largest mass evacuation of people in the Territory before a cyclone ever.

Dozens of community members joined our McArthur River Mine crew to officially open our new nursery. Named Gungujubina it honours Gudanji elder “Aunty”, a lady who taught us so many things about the country around our mine and the plants and animals that inhabit it.

Sam Strohmayr welcomes Billy Miller and Peggy Mawson to officially open the nursery, joined by Christine Jones, Mary-Anne Ah One and Floyd Ellis from the Environmental Rehabilitation team.

Cont.McArthur River Mine, which is 970 kilometres south-east of Darwin and 65 kilometres south of Borroloola, operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Glencore exports the mineral concentrates from the Bing Bong Loading Facility, 130 kilometres to the north.

Mr Ashe told the Mining the Territory conference that the open-cut mine makes a substantial contribution to the local economy - it's a $460 million-a-year business.

The mine employed more than 1000 workers in 2018, paid $84.7 million in wages and salaries, spent $321.4 million on goods and services, including using 500 Territory businesses, and invested nearly $60 million on capital works.

MRM accounts for 20 percent of the mining activity in the NT; it has been operating for 24 years and has an expected mine life to 2038 with a further 10 years for reprocessing tailings.

Mr Ashe said the mine had faced challenges.

"But that's okay because Territorians are known for their innovation, tenacity, persistence and resilience."

The mine had to develop fine grinding technology to unlock metal in the ore, which is "close to the consistency of talcum powder".

"This is world-leading technology developed right here in the Territory - which is now used all over the world."

He said MRM also successfully diverted the McArthur River - "and have put in place a comprehensive rehabilitation and monitoring regime to ensure the health of aquatic and ecological systems".

"Maintaining the good health of the McArthur River is our highest environmental objective."

Mr Ashe outlined what it meant for the mine to have a "clear path forward" following the Federal and Territory government approvals: The ability to continue to employ 1000 workers The ability to help more Territorians who are eager "to get their foot in the door of mining", including traineeships and apprentices to local people.

MRM welcomed Selena Uibo, Northern Territory Education and Workforce Development Minister, to McArthur River Mine on the 2nd October to meet with our apprentices, trainees and graduates.

We currently have 20 trainees, 11 apprentices and 10 graduates on site. Many more local and NT trainee truck operator positions will be mobilised in the near future.

The awards offer finalists the chance to gain personal satisfaction and access opportunities in their industry, and provide the opportunity to be part of an elite group of ambassadors who represent the Territory’s best in vocational education and training.

MRM is a proud sponsor of the event, with our L&D Business partner Jodie Williams judging two categories, and represented on the presentation night by Adam Hatfield, Manager Health, Safety, Environment & Community.

New Cultural Space for the VillageCampbell’s BBQ area has had a makeover thanks to our Environment team and MST, who have created a cultural space for us to hold cultural workshops and events.

The area has been fitted out with new lighting and amenities, with bush medicine trees planted around the area. Cultural workshops are a great way to learn about Gudanji country from the traditional owners of the land we operate on.

Local pathways successWith a mine life that extends to 30 years, a key driver is to implement a strategic initiative that drives greater local workforce participation and delivers on our sustainable development objectives.

The best way to do this is to engage local people in permanent employment that offers real career pathways. That’s why we’ve kicked off a new partnership and employment program unlike former models that haven’t quite been able to achieve a strong retention ratio.

Our partnership with IE Project & Pandanus Development Group employs and develops local people through supported skill building and a work ready approach.

“It offers ways to learn skills, build knowledge, gain work experience, upskill, attain qualifications and win a permanent job – leading onto a defined job pathways and lifelong learning,” said Jodie Williams, MRM’s Learning & Development Business Partner. This month our McArthur River Mine environmental rehabilitation team reached a milestone - celebrating planting 120,001 plants into the McArthur River channel rehabilitation for this year.

Since rehabilitation began in 2009, we’ve planted a grand total of 664,784 plants.
