A Message from the President Dear Fellow CCR Members, Sorry I missed the last Members’ Meeting. I heard Bubba did a great job presiding in my absence; many thanks and kudos to Bubba. I also heard we had a very good turnout in spite of the dreary weather. Thanks to all of you who have, and continue to support CCR!

Now, since it is so important, I must repeat some of what I stated last month:

Election of the CCR Board of Directors will take place in November, and we are looking for Members to fill some of the Director positions. This is the List of Candidates to date:

President Bubba Carr Vice President Marc Morison Treasurer Paul Murman Recording Secretary Sue Ann Bickert Corresponding Secretary open Historian David Dolan Sergeant-At-Arms Bob Darling Webmaster open Newsletter Editor open

Penny Johnson has agreed to Chair the Nominating Committee. If you would like to run for any position, please contact her at 804 737 5685, or [email protected] or contact one of the other Members of the Nominating Committee: Rob Bickert: 804 920 4092, or [email protected] Mike Todd: 804 869 6836, or [email protected]

Moving on to the fun stuff… Our Event Calendar has many great activities posted with more to come. The list is in this issue, and let’s get out there and have more Fun, Fellowship and Food!

Other Events are also in the planning stages, so please help us fill the CCR Calendar! If you have ideas for new Events, please contact any Board Member and let us know how to make our club better with more outstanding CCR Events.

I hope to see all the regulars AND lots of new faces at our upcoming Events. Best Wishes and remember to Save the Wave!

Life is a highway, and I wanna drive it in my Corvette with my best friend Doris as copilot. Your CCR friend,

Bob Brody

A Message from the Treasurer

It’s That Time of the Year!

On or about the 15th of October, you should receive a dues renewal notice being sent to the e-mail ad-

dress that is on file in our database. This year we have the ability to pay online for renewals as well as

by the mail-in form. If you would like to pay on line, just follow the instructions in the renewal e-mail

to pay online. Annual dues are still $25 for an individual and $35 per couple (member and spouse/

significant other/child). If you joined in the last quarter of 2018 you are automatically paid for 2019.

If you do not receive your dues renewal notice please contact me at [email protected] or you can

call me at (804) 748-7695.

While you are renewing your membership, if you plan to attend the Christmas Dinner/Dance, this is a

good time to register and pay for the event. As with the dues, you can pay online for this event. Re-

member that as a member or member couple of CCR you can bring non-member guests and couples to

the Dinner/Dance to enhance your evening of fun and fellowship.

The cost for the Christmas Dinner/Dance will be as follows:

$35 per member ($70 for joint member couples)

$70 per person for non-members

$105 for member bringing a non-member guest

$140 for a non-member guest couple

Since the party will be December 1st, it is important that you return your payment promptly. More in-

formation on the Dinner/Dance is on the website, as well as in the newsletter.

Thank you

By Barry Roper, NCM Ambassador/Lifetime Member

As was announced and discussed during the Club meeting in September, the clock has struck indicating that the 'Less Than A Year Away' countdown has officially begun. Registration for participation in the 25th Anniversary Celebration at the Na-tional Corvette Museum was opened on Sep 12th. Registration for participation in the Carolinas & Virginia Corvette Caravan has become available as of the same time. So what are the im-plications for you? The Condensed Version is that CCR members who even remotely think they may be interested in participating in this multi-state conglomerate of Corvette owners need to be taking action ASAP. While the actual event is still months away, the arrangements, planning, and particularly the acquisition of hotel rooms require early action to avoid being left out or lodged at some dis-tance from most of your Club or traveling companions. Blocks of hotel rooms are controlled pri-marily by the Caravan Captains and there will be literally thousands of the Corvette Faithful competing for sleeping spaces and other amenities. Our Caravan Captains Frank and Laura Sancineto are veteran organizers and have been Captains for multiple Caravans (2003, 2009, 2014). Their duties are intensified for 2019 with three additional states (WV, MD, DE) being welcomed to our Carolinas & Virginia contingent, so come one, come all. For some Corvette owners, participation is a 'been there, done that' event, while many others can't wait to sign up for the next one. Especially for members who may have joined CCR more recently, some of the members who enjoyed earlier Caravans may be founts of information. Look at name badges and ask the Rhodes, Batemans, Todds, Maloys, Danny Terry & Norma Bonner, DT Tucker, Johnsons, Williams, Cummings, Brodys, Ropers, or Nancy Harri-son.

Multiple logos will be encountered during the months leading to the Caravan and the Anniversary Celebration. The logo seen above is that of our regional Caravan which at this time remains designated Carolinas & Virginia even though participants from three other states will be travel-ing with us. A silver logo featuring a '63 Corvette split-window is the official symbol of the 2019 National Corvette Caravan. A third emblem

in red, white, and blue has been the official logo of the 25th Anniversary of the NCM but all three of these insignia acknowledge the simultaneous nature of the Caravan arriving at the Museum to kick off the three days of celebratory activities. CCR Corvette enthusiasts who decide to partake of the full activities of

both the Caravan and the Anniversary will depart the Richmond area on Sunday, Aug 25th, spend Sunday and Monday nights in Concord, NC, sign up for Monday laps on the NASCAR Char-lotte Motor Speedway if desired, and depart NC with the six state Caravan on Wednesday AM. The route will follow I-40W, I-75N, KY 80W, and I-65S to Bowling Green. Lunch will be at the Deer Park Restaurant on the Biltmore Estate in Asheville and we'll spend Tuesday night in Sevierville, TN, with dinner provided. Wednesday AM the Caravan will lunch in Columbia, KY, before the final sprint to the hotels. Thursday officially kicks off the celebration with the open-ing ceremony and an evening concert with fireworks. IMPORTANT: Two separate registrations are required. 1) Registration for the Carolinas & Vir-ginia Caravan requires completion of a form now available on the home page of CCR's website. Mail the completed form with your payment to the Durham, NC, address provided there. With that done, hotel reservations can be obtained NOW, for 2 nights at the Concord Hampton Inn, call (865) 465-0590, $105/nt single/double, and then for 1 night at the Hampton Inn in Sevierville, TN, call (865) 465-0590, $109/nt single/double. With both calls, mention

that you are with the Carolinas and Virginia Corvette Caravan. 2) Registration with the National Corvette Museum for the 25th Anniversary celebration is accomplished online. Go to corvette-museum.com home page and select EXPLORE at the top, then CORVETTE CARAVAN on the left side, then REGISTER NOW, and finally CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. After both registrations are submitted, a confirmatory email will be sent regarding your eligibility to obtain a hotel reserva-tion in Bowling Green, for up to 4 nights. Those who START the Caravan in Concord, NC, will have priority for rooms in Bowling Green. Departure for most attendees will be on Sunday, Sep 1st. There will be no caravan back so everyone will return home on their own or in small groups. Registration costs to attend the 25th Anniversary celebration are less for those who are Na-tional Corvette Museum members. Lifetime members pay $30/person, Annual members $40/person, and non-members $65/person. Alternatively, non-members could consider becoming members before registration. Annual members pay $50/single or $100/family and immedi-ately enjoy membership benefits including 10% off merchandise purchased from the Corvette Store/catalog plus an annual subscription to America's Sports Car magazine. The registration fee then will be only $40 instead of $65 and the Museum will be supported by another new member. Note that 25th Anniversary reservation fees can be cancelled until July 11th of 2019 and hotel reservations up until 48 hours in advance without penalty.

Corvette Show

By

Queen City Corvette Club, Charlotte, NC

ODs – Paul and Gayle Murman

On Saturday, October 13, 2018, the Queen City Corvette Club of Charlotte, NC, will be having their 7th annual Corvette Show. The show is at Hendrick Motorsports, 4400

Papa Joe Hendrick Blvd, Concord, NC, which is near the Charlotte Motor Speedway. In addition to the Corvette show, a tour of the Hendrick Heritage Center will be avail-

able for an additional fee. That same weekend (10/12 & 10/13) Blooming Gold will be on display with special Corvette judging. Although not confirmed, NCSR may have

some classic Corvettes on display and Rick Hendrick may also have some Corvettes on

display. There will also be professional drag racing at the drag strip that weekend.

Gayle and I have made a hotel a reservation and have registered for the show. We will lead a caravan on October 12, for any who want to travel with us. We will depart at

exactly 10:00 AM and stop for lunch around noon. If you plan on traveling with us, please let us know.

We will have flyers for the show and some information about the hotel where we have

reservations at the August Club meeting. Flyers for the show are also available on the Queen City Corvette Club’s website.

It is a rain or shine event, so rain is not permitted that weekend.

Upcoming Event Tour the Collection of Lewis Little

October 20, 2018 Bob and Doris Brody

Please join us for a Tour of the Lewis Little Auto Collection followed by lunch at Smithfield Station. Lewis Little has a wonderful collection of Autos and Automobile Memorabilia that has been featured in Boomer Magazine and elsewhere. The cost of this event is $5 per person which must be paid in advance to Bob Brody, 3918 McTyres Cove Court, Midlothian, VA 23112. Tour attendance is limited to the first 50 CCR Members who pay. (Sorry no children under 12 will be admitted to Mr. Lewis’s Collection.) Sorry, I cannot find any recent photos of the Collection; here are a couple from 2013. Mr. Lewis changes his collection regularly, so the display will be different from what we saw in 2013, and we will see some beauties that were not on display for our last visit.

We will meet at 8:45 AM at the Sheetz, 231 East Hundred Road, Chester, VA 23836, for a 9:00 AM Driver’s meeting. We will departure at 9:15AM and travel Route 10 to Smithfield. A stop at Hardee’s, 1909 S Church St, Smithfield, VA 23430, will allow a break prior to the tour the Collection, which starts at 11:15 AM. At 12:30 we will travel to Smithfield Station for lunch. A varied menu, selected just for our group, will be available and they will tabulate individual checks. Get your $5 payment to me soon to be one of the first 50.

Holiday Lights Weekend at the Beach by Lori Dolan

I'm sad to report that this annual event (started by Danny Norma and then picked up by JR & Linda Walker, and Dave & I) has run its course. It was fun while it lasted!

We want to thank everyone from CCR, Beachcombers, and Virginia Corvette Club for their support over the years. Special thanks goes out to Bill and Susan (Jaworsky) Hardy for their hospitality during our pit-stops at their Suffolk home.

Event ReCap GlowGolf

ODs – Paul and Gayle Murman

It was a dark and stormy night (actually, it was a rainy, overcast Sunday afternoon) when 17 of CCR’s finest and most courageous miniature golfers entered the dark confines of the indoor Glow Golf facility. They were ready, willing and without fear as they attacked each obstacle that was be-fore them. Twenty seven challenges, each with their own special impediment to foil the talented CCR group. After adjusting their vision to the darkened battleground, each CCR member chose their weapon (a putter) and selected a round glowing object (golf ball). Then the seventeen divided into groups of three or less and began their quest to face and defeat the challenges that lay ahead. As expected, #1 was the famous “windmill”, a test of accuracy and timing. Some were able to succeed on the first try, while others took a little longer to defeat this opponent. And so on it went with each hole having its own special obstacle to overcome. Some groups kept a tally of their experience, while others decided that battling each hole was suffi-cient and their effort did not need to be recorded. Some accepted the twenty seven challenges and retired. Others continued on for a second helping, confident they could conquer this beast. The very last hole was such a difficult challenge that anyone who recorded a “hole in one” would get a special prize. On this day we had two successful players, Janie Hughes and Peggy Maloy, each winning a Glow bracelet and a free round of Glow Golf. As with most CCR events, after the completion of this section, we proceeded to Palermo Trattoria Pizzeria for food. Twenty four CCR members joined us for this portion of the event. The food, the portion size, the beverages, and the service were excellent. After a long, leisurely meal, the waiter presented me everyone’s bill. Needless to say, I was shocked. After finally convincing the waiter that it was EPO (each pays own), it was time to begin the journey home. Once again we had an event that included all the three “F”s, required for a CCR event. That would be Fun, Food, and Fel-lowship!

2018 Heritage Chevrolet Customer Appreciation Day Corvette-Only Car Show

What a beautiful day we had on Sunday for the annual Heritage Chevrolet Customer Apprecia-

tion Day festivities!! When we arrived, the lot was already cleared except for a few new Cor-

vettes. We put up the tents and tables, while the employees moved the remaining cars to the

edge of the lot. The employees had their hands full prepping the grill and getting the ice ma-

chine loaded. For those early folks, we were treated to breakfast sausages hot off the grill.

We had 44 registrations, including Jay Burchell's new C7.

The 50/50 raffle tickets were sold by Sue Ann Bickert, and what a great job! She collected a

total of $227.00. Ed Paterek won the 50/50 drawing, and the remaining $113 went toward the

donations for the Feedmore and the Chesterfield Food Bank. Ed Paterek donated $80 of his

50/50 winnings toward the cause. In total, we collected $1362.00 in monetary donations. As

they have in the past, Heritage Chevrolet will match our donation to contribute a total of

$2724.00.

In addition to all the fun, we collected one joint membership application that will go before the

board in October. All things considered, I think we had a pretty successful day.

Special thanks to all my helpers: Danny Terry and Norman Hayes who helped with parking

the cars; Terry Corbin who took lots of pictures; and Duane Maloy who helped tally the win-

ners. I also want to give a special thank you to Donna Carr for working the Registration table.

Without her help, this event would not have been such a great success.

Special thanks goes to the employees at Heritage Chevrolet who setup, grilled the hotdogs

(and sausages) and chose our winners. And finally, thanks to everyone that spent Sunday

with us to make this event happen!

Corvette in the News I drove a $137,000 Corvette ZR1 to see if the most hard-

core Vette of all time is as terrifying as it looks — here's

the verdict

By: Matthew DeBord September 26, 2018

If there's any substance to all the rumors and spy-shoots

flying around the internet, the next generation of the Chevy

Corvette, a car that has been in continuous production since

1953, will not have the engine up front where it belongs,

but in the middle.

This will make for a better race car — Corvette Racing has

for years been notching prestigious victories — but if the

motor moves, the eighth-generation Vette will be a whole

new ball game.

Things change, and there's no point in defying progress. But

until the new Vette arrives, we have a bevy of seventh-gen

Vettes to enjoy.

There's the magnificent Stingray, Business Insider's 2014

Car of the Year. Then there's the Grand Sport, in my view

the best bang for the buck in sports cars on Earth. For the

fearless, there's the beastly Z06, Bowling Green's version of

a supercar.

And finally, there's the ZR1. If the Z06 turns Corvette up to

11 with 650 horsepower, the ZR1 takes it to 111, or 1,111

— or just trashes the amplifier dials altogether and creates a

white-hot supernova of noise and power. The same V8 en-

gine that provides the Z06 with its epic output, when modi-

fied and ridiculously intensified, generates a near-comical

755 horsepower in the ZR1.

Test Lab 61 . . . Did GM Let 1963 Corvette Slip

Away? By: Jerry Heasley September 29, 2018

The day after he bought this 1963 Corvette in 1986, he found this

inscription on a tag attached to the frame behind the driver-side

rear wheel.

Could Test Lab 61 be the only test car Corvette to escape to the

public?

Maybe at one time Zora Arkus-Duntov test-drove this Daytona

Blue beauty around the GM Proving grounds and even on Wood-

ward Avenue?

Cook recently retired and got this car running after parking it in

his garage for 32 years. Finally, after years of collaborating with

the late and great Noland Adams, legendary Corvette historian,

and researching on his own for all this time, Cook is divulging the

secrets of Test Lab 61.

In 1986, Cook noted the 1963 had already been repainted with

lacquer and back to its original Daytona Blue, but everything else

on the car appeared original. Furthermore, over the years, Cook

has “not touched anything,” and took Noland Adams’ advice not

to drive the car and to be careful of what he replaced on this car

because “what might not seem original might be original to the

true testing of the car.”

How wonderful Adams’ advice has proven, as we can now look

back in time at a piece of Corvette test car history that for 1963

was a portent of the future.

Meet Corvette Racing Team Manager Ben Johnson By: Andy Bolig September 17, 2018

Race car drivers have always been the front-and-center stars of any racing venue. It’s easy to see that those who carve

the corners for factory-sponsored Corvette Racing are adored by fans all over the globe, but it would be a huge dis-

service to think that they alone carry the cars to the finish line.

In a venue where “Jake” the team mascot is more recognizable than

the faces of many who contribute to the team’s greatness, it’s always

good to recognize that they are in fact, a group of individuals working

together. Mobil1 The Grid just released this video that highlights one

of those behind the helmets who reside in the pits, but have as much

to do with guiding Corvettes into the winner’s circle as those with a

steering wheel in their hands.

Ben Johnson has been Corvette Racing’s Team Manager since Janu-

ary 2016 and is instrumental in unifying the efforts of the entire team

for a result that is greater than its parts. Tasked with tying various

personalities and abilities into a world-renowned effort is more than

merely barking orders or reading a script. In the fast-paced world of

automotive racing, where conditions can change in the blink of an

eye, Ben needs not only the support of the entire team, but also a vast,

working knowledge of each competitor, whether on his team, or an-

other.

Over the decades, we’ve seen Corvette Racing grow as a team, and enjoy time in the spotlight as well as on the podium.

The names have changed on some of the fire suits over the decades, but one this is certain – Corvette Racing has served

to hold America’s sportscar wheel-to-wheel, alongside some of the best competition that this world has to offer. Consis-

tency and reliability are key components of the winning formula, and that only comes from dedicated, talented individu-

als who give their all on a regular basis.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to every individual who currently, or in the past, has proudly lifted Corvette’s crossed flags

in competition. The world knows that when Corvette Racing shows up, the race isn’t over until the checkered flag and

every team member, like Ben Johnson, will have their eyes on that top spot of the podium.

Tech Tips Driving Tips Number #5

Street Techniques

Yesterday, I drove up to Charlotte to do a TV show for Speed-vision. It is from Flowery Branch just over 200 miles, and like always I was amazed at some of the things that I saw drivers do. So I figured I would take a break from what I usually dis-cuss, and go over some other things that will make you a bet-ter driver. First off, everyone should back off on the tailgating. I think everyone has been watching way to much Nascar racing !!! There is nothing that puts you at bigger risk than driving 70 plus MPH and being two car lengths off of the car in front of you. It’s pretty simple, but if that cat in front of you hits his brakes, you are going to hit him, and likely take both of you out. Give yourself and the other drivers room to work. The two second rule works. When that car in front of you passes a point, it should take you two seconds to count prior to you passing the same point. If you don’t make two seconds…you are too close. That leads us to the next comment. If you ever get passed on the right by another car (unless you are in England, Japan, or Australia), then you are a wanker !! Pay attention to the traffic behind you, and if someone quicker comes up, move to a slower lane and let him pass. It’s not rocket science, but by doing that, traffic moves easier and thus safer. I think everyone, before they get their license to drive, should have to sit in the cab of a semi or other big truck. If you have, you would never cut in front of one again on the highway. Your car is so totally insignificant to them size wise. If they have to slow down and you are just in front of them…well it is game over for you. Give those guys room, and be aware that they might be on the final leg of a several day journey, and not be

all that alert. This next one really bugs me. If you know that you are going to make a turn up ahead, put on your signal before you hit the brakes. This lets the driver behind you prepare for what you are going to do. Everyday I see someone slow down, and then at the last second put on their blinker. It is in your own interest to use your signal properly and thus reduce the chances of getting rear ended. Finally…at least for now…use your mirrors !!! Your rear view mir-ror should be set up to see what is behind you, and your side view mirrors to see what is next to you. Most people set their side view

mirrors so that they can also see what is behind them. Use those side mirrors to cover your blind spot. I al-ways set mine so that I can just barely, if I move my head, see the side of my car. That way, should I need to change lanes quickly, I don’t have to turn my head and look over my shoulder to check my blind spot. A quick glance in the side mirror tells me I am clear to move. Be smart on the streets, and be safe Johnny O
