The weather, we all like to comment on it, complain about it and sometimes cuss at it. It is too dry, too wet, too cold, too hot, too windy. Still, in Iowa none of this talk is very serious as we look to the southeast and remember we do not have hurricanes.

According to the by-laws October is designated as our business meeting. Your Board of Directors has suggested some changes to the by-laws. Those changes are included in this newsletter for you to consider. Then we have three directors whose terms expire at the end of the year. We need to fill those vacancies, so nominations and elections are on the agenda.

On a recent cross-country bus trip, we stopped at two different botanical gardens. They were both nice with some interesting features. As stimulating they were they did not have anything on our local gardens like Reiman and the Iowa Arboretum. Sometimes we take our local assets for granted.

Some of the pots we have been taking care of all year are at their most glorious. If you would like to share yours bring it to our meeting. See you on the 16th. Tom Jordan 2017 SCMGA President SCMGA Meeting September 18, 2017 Reiman Gardens

Joan Peterson had a demonstration of her new favorite tool – Don’s Lily Divider (Donsdaylilydivider.com)

Speaker: Speaker had to cancel so VP Lisa Hein had a round table discussion with all members – introducing themselves, where members get their volunteer and education hours, garden problems.

Meeting was called to order at 8:15 p.m. by Vice President Lisa Hein.

Treasurer Brenda Cruse presented the financial report –

• Current balance in checking account is $13,986.30. Plant Sale 2017 final total is $7815.15.

• Thank You note from Jerry Grieving’s family for the donation to Reiman Gardens • Letter received from Iowa Arboretum requesting SCMGA sponsorship in whole or part

for an intern for the summer of 2018. Total cost of sponsoring an intern for 10 weeks is $5200. Issue will be revisited next month. Last year SCMGA donated $2500 to the Iowa Arboretum in addition to a $250 membership. $2500 was also donated to Reiman Gardens.

• Brenda presented a breakdown of our sales from Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as Sunday Sales 2017 2016 2015 Gross Sales Sunday Sales ($ amt/% of total)

SCMGA Symposium will be held on November 18, 2017 at the Iowa Arboretum. Most speakers are lined up for the day. The lunch will be catered.

Book donations to area libraries – titles are being finalized.

Board Members – Four members will be finishing their terms – Lisa Hein, Jackie Runyan, Ann Wilbur (board) and Tom Jordon will be resigning as President.

Jackie and Ann will be off the board, Lisa agreed to serve again. A replacement is needed for our President Tom Jordon. During discussion Susan Stocker agreed to serve. Nominations need to be published in the newsletter being sent October 2. We are still in need of two more board members. Please consider serving on the board. Send nominations (you can volunteer yourself) to Lisa Hein.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

Submitted by Michelle Boswell for Andrea Dorn.

Opportunities for Service and Education

Service | Volunteer to give a presentation at the SCMGA meetings | Volunteer to work at Evergreen Lane gardens in Nevada. I’d like to line up some volunteers

for next year now so let’s all think ahead. Contact Andrea [email protected] or 515/382-5604

Education | This fall the new Master Gardener class will begin in September. Katie Williams had sent out

an email to everyone on Tuesday, Aug 8th that included the schedule for the upcoming classes in case anyone wanted to host a class. Response was great and the host listed filled up quickly. This led me to inquire about sitting in on a class if not a host. Previously, as an active Master Gardener, you were allowed to sit in on any class and receive education credits for it. This year the Story and Boone Program Coordinators decided not to offer that option unless you agreed to host the class. However, you can still take the class on-line after it has been presented and receive education credits for it. If you are interested in a specific class, contact the Story County Program Coordinator, Katie Williams at [email protected] or call the office at 515-382-6551.

SCMGA 2015 Program Calendar | October 16 – Gabbie Edwards on "What's wrong with my tree? A guide for tree detectives" | November 20 - Donald Lewis, How insects make it through the winter | December 18 - Carl Kurtz, Prairie restoration and management

If you have any announcements you would like included in the SCMGA Newsletter, please email the announcements to [email protected] at least 3 weeks prior to the monthly meeting date.

Sincerely, Andrea Dorn 2015 SCMGA Secretary 515-382-5604 [email protected] Please contact your 2014 SCMGA Board of Directors, if you have questions or concerns:
