Put It All On (Part 1) Given all of the potential threats the United States is currently facing from our nation’s enemies, there has been a lot of talk in the news lately about what defenses we have in place in the event of an attack. We all, of course, hope that we don’t get attacked, but it is reassuring to know that these defenses are in place. I wonder, are we as Christians as aware of the defenses God has provided for us to protect us against spiritual attack as our country is aware of its defenses against a foreign enemy? It is so critical that we not only be aware of these defenses, but also that we be actively engaged in using them as an attack against us from our spiritual enemies isn’t a possibility, but a present reality. Paul reminds us of our current struggle- “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). In the midst of this battle, we are exhorted to take up the whole armor of God that we might be able to continue to stand firm in this evil day. Standing firm in our spiritual battles requires that we put on the six pieces of protective armor God has provided for our defense (6:14-18). We will look at two of these pieces of protection in this month’s article and the other four in the next two month’s Connecting Point articles.

Put on the belt of truth=truthfulness or integrity Before a Roman soldier put on his armor, he put a belt around his waist. Without this belt, his tunic would pose a real problem–similar to the problems ladies face in trying to climb stairs in a long dress. A long flowing garment will easily trip a person up. The belt enabled the soldier to tuck everything in and get it out of the way so he could move about with freedom and ease on the battlefield. Spiritually, the belt which pulls the loose ends together so we are not tripped up is truth or truthfulness. The idea is to live a life characterized by integrity, honesty, and sincerity as opposed to one full of deceit, lies, and hypocrisy. Our character and life should exude truth with the result that we enjoy a clear conscience before God. With a clear conscience, Satan is prevented from attacking us with his condemning accusations.

Why does the lack of truthfulness leave us so vulnerable to attack? When a lie gets into our lives that we try to protect for fear of exposure, we are in trouble. Our attempts to hide our lack of truthfulness lead us deeper into sin and make us even more vulnerable to enemy attack. We become cowards, doing whatever we can to prevent exposure. For example, think about all of the negative effects of David’s attempts to cover up his sin with Bathsheba. I remember my uncle’s example as a chaplain in the United States Army. There was a time when he was approached by fellow chaplains and encouraged to handle some funds dishonestly. He was encouraged to join a “good old boys” network and essentially threatened that he would not advance in rank if he refused to play their game. Being a man of truthfulness and integrity, my uncle refused. While it did cost him his promotion and he was forced into early retirement, imagine how much more dearly he would have had to pay if he had compromised his integrity and was dishonest. Think of all of the evil practices he might have been tempted into doing for fear of accusation and exposure. When the enemy has a hold on us and a place to accuse us because of our lack of truthfulness, he has a means of dragging us deeper and deeper into sin and causing us to fall. Let us buckle up with the belt of truth, allowing the Spirit of God to form in us a reputation for sincerity and integrity. May our lips and our life be truthful through and through and may our consciences be clear.

Put on the breastplate of righteousness=righteousness practices; Spirit produced, Christ-like living

The breastplate of a Roman soldier’s armor was made of metal plates or chains that covered the body from the neck to the waist, both front and back. Its purpose was to guard the vulnerable area of the chest and the abdomen. It protected the soldier from the small dagger that was used in battle at short range to “go for the heart.” Spiritually, the breastplate of righteousness is the personal practice of

righteousness in our day-to-day lives. It is Christ-like living that the Holy Spirit produces in us as we depend on Him. Without personal righteousness, we are left with no protection against Satan’s accusatory attacks. In the spiritual battle, we need to make sure our breastplate is complete and sound. A dagger doesn’t need much of an opening to pierce a soldier’s body and cause its destruction. In a similar way, sins in the life of a child of God that remain unconfessed are like defects in our breastplate through which the enemy can thrust his sword. Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking that our only concern needs to be avoiding “big sins.” It is our tendency to exercise great care about the “big things”—the flagrant violations of righteousness—while at the same time becoming lax about the “little things”—the little and secret sins. Where in the Bible do we see God ranking sin? Yes, there are different consequences for sin, but sin is sin to God. He would have us to stop our sin whatever it may be. One of Satan’s tactics is to take a hold of “little sins” in our life and use them as a base of operation through which he works to bring more sin and defeat in our life. Any departure from the righteousness of Christ gives Satan an opportunity to attack us and cause us to fall in battle. Satan just loves to entice us into sin and then club us when we do. That’s why he’s called the “accuser of the brethren.” What protects us spiritually from taking a sword in the heart? We need to allow the Spirit of God to produce the practical or personal righteousness of Christ in us. When the Spirit produces Christ-like character in us, we are protected. What do we do when we become aware of unrighteousness in our lives? We need to keep our confession of sin up to date. We need to acknowledge our sins, seeing them as God does with a view towards being restored to close fellowship with Him. When we confess our sin in this way, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us (1 John 1:9). Forgiven and cleansed, we continue to remain protected from enemy attack. Pastor Ben Brown

SENIOR CONNECTIONSENIOR CONNECTION Senior Connection will meet in the chapel on Thursday, October 12, for the movie “Friends for Life” at 3:00 p.m. Following the movie, we will share a meal in the Fellowship Hall (cost is $5). Sign up at the counter in the lobby.

You don’t want to miss this heartwarming story of four orphaned wolf pups, a man facing a lonely future, and the act of kindness that saved them all.

Big city attorney Jim Crawford had won most of the battles in his life, but he couldn't win the battle against his wife's illness. Devastated and alone, he is left to face a lonely future. But suddenly, an unexpected twist of fate leads Jim to discover four orphaned wolf pups who face certain death unless he takes them in. Unprepared for the task, but unwilling to see them suffer, he takes them into his care and keeping. It is a daunting task with unintended, sometimes hilarious consequences. As the wolf pups grow, so does Jim's love for them. But wolves are creatures of the wild, and Jim is faced with the excruciating decision to return his companions from where they came. He does so, hoping they'll remember him...fearing they won't. Reluctantly, he must say goodbye once again. What Jim doesn't anticipate is the way in

which his four beloved friends repay his love... in a surprising and courageous way.

He changes the times

and the seasons.

Daniel 2:21 MISSIONARY VISIT

Dan & Sandy Varberg, serving at Faith Academy in the Philippines, will visit Calvary on October 8. Adult Communities will combine as the Varbergs share during Community hour from 9:00-10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We’d like to get current contact information for ALL of our regular attenders - and pictures, too. We’ll be collecting information and taking pictures every Sunday in October in the lobby. Please stop by!

New to Calvary? Please stop by the picture area in the lobby to fill out a Contact Information Form and get your family picture taken.

Been attending Calvary for awhile? Please let us know if you have a new address, phone number, or email address so we can update our database. You are welcome to stop by and update your picture should you desire.

ONLINE DIRECTORY Our online directory is called “Instant Church Directory.” It is a GREAT tool that we encourage all of our regular attenders to use! It can only be accessed by church attenders who submit their contact information and email address. Those people are then given a unique password via the Instant Church Directory app. It can be viewed through a mobile app or via your computer. Printed copies of the Online Directory will be available upon request.

We would love for you to be included in the Church Database & Online Directory!

CHURCH DATABASE Our database allows us to get in touch with you, record important events, create reports, track attendance, and more, so it is important that we have your information. This is only accessible to church staff.

Special Leadership Meeting

On Sunday, October 15, during the Community hour, at 9:00 a.m., we will have a special meeting in the Calvary Chapel. We will discuss the next steps for helping Calvary be more intentional about disciple-making in its ministry programs. All Elders, Trustees, Deacons, and Mission Committee members are encouraged to attend as well as members of the Adult Leadership Team, Assimilation Team, and Evangelism Outreach Team.

Debt Free in 23 Campaign The Trustee Committee would like to invite you to participate in the “Debt Free in 23” campaign with the intent to have the mortgage paid off by 2023. Starting October 1 through November 5, we will take an offering that is over and above your tithes and L.I.F.E. Campaign donations and use these offerings as a payment directly to the mortgage principal. This payment will also be above and beyond the monthly principal payments that are normally scheduled from the budget and from GFL -Groceries, Gas, (& Starbucks) For Life. For those who are new to the church, our building was formerly a Wal-Mart building

which we purchased in 2008. We have invested about $4.5 million in building and land improvements and have a debt of just under $1.4 million. We pay about $4,660.00 per month toward the principal from the budget and pay about $500.00 per month toward the principal from GFL. As you can see, in the past 9 years, we have been blessed. This thanksgiving offering will be paid directly toward the principal as an extra one-time payment. If you are interested in contributing to this campaign (again, with intent of this being over and above normal tithes and L.I.F.E. Campaign contributions), there will be green and white envelopes available in the chair pockets in the Worship Center or you can simply list “Debt Free in 23” on your check memo and place it in the offering. Thank you in advance for your generous giving. If you have any questions, please contract one of the Trustee Committee Members: Nathan Meyer, Ken Schaeffer, Sam Schelhaas, Mark Valencsin, Mark Wenzlaff, and Troy Whitley.

ADULT COMMUNITIES

ADULT COMMUNITIES

October 22—December 3 Sundays, 9:00-10:10 a.m.

It has been exactly five hundred years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the All Saints' Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther's theses called for the reform of the church and served as the catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. It is why Protestant churches exist today. For six weeks, we will honor its 500th anniversary by looking at the five core truths that came from the Reformation, now referred to as the solas. These solas include:

Sola Scriptura (by Scripture alone)

Sola gratia (by grace alone)

Sola fide (through faith alone)

Solus Christus (through Christ alone)

Soli Deo gloria (glory to God alone)

As you'll see in this study, the solas are more than cold Latin terms that academics throw around in church-history books. The five solas, like the Reformation itself, are intensely practical. They were the DNA of the Reformation and are still the DNA of the church today. They are grounded in a real-life, every day following of Jesus. They're the most important, basic scriptural truths you can ever believe. We stand on the shoulders of Christians in the past, and knowing where we came from will help us keep moving forward with passion and biblical clarity. Our two Communities: ENCORE (meeting in the Youth Theater) and ROCK (meeting in the Chapel) will rotate six speakers addressing the five solas and an overview history of the Reformation. Teachers will include Nick Stutzman, Drew Stevens, Mark Valencsin, Paul Anders, Don Lowrie, and Chris Hooley.

A NOTE FROM THE TEACHER...

The month of September brought all things fall. We enjoyed apple tasting (3’s and 4’s visited Riverside Park and the JK went to the Country Orchard in Harrisburg, SD) and we cooked with apples as we studied the letter Aa. We had teddy bear celebrations (including a teddy bear picnic!) when we studied the letter Tt. We also studied the letters Ee, Oo, and Ll. This month we’ll study Ff, Hh, Pp, and Cc. We’ll visit the pumpkin patch, make pancakes and pizza, and have a fall party. JK will tour Pizza Ranch as well. Please continue to pray for our school and our students. Thank you for your support of the daycare and your understanding and patience as we began this ministry. We are now close to capacity and have a limited number of openings. We have received very positive feedback from parents and are excited to be up and running.

Thank you also for the many donations from pack ‘n plays to toys. We are so grateful for your generosity.

Please continue to pray for the children and their families. We have a wonderful opportunity to share Jesus with the community through this outreach ministry. Thank you for your support and prayers.

THE BANQUET Calvary Baptist took our turn serving the Yankton Area Banquet at the end of September. We supplied the food, and about 25 volunteers helped. Our church is just one of 77 groups who serve this meal. Meals are served every Thursday and the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The Yankton Area Banquet just celebrated its 20th anniversary, having served its first meal on August 28, 1997. Damar Hoxsie, a core member said, “We cooked for 70 people that night, but we had 140 people show up. We never ran out of food though. That was our confirmation to show that a higher power was with us and guiding us along the way.” “The guests often take some of the food and fellowship felt here to others who can’t make it to the Banquet,” said Carol Myers. “For the Myers, Hoxsie, and many others, the Banquet is about a lot more than just providing meals to those in need of sustenance. It is about providing a place to fellowship and healing that can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone in Yankton. The effects of the good deeds done at the Banquet often ripple out in the farthest corners of the community,” quoted the Yankton Press and Dakotan.

A NOTE FROM THE MISSIONS COMMITTEE

CALVARY MISSION OPPORTUNITY TO UKRAINECALVARY MISSION OPPORTUNITY TO UKRAINE The Ukraine mission trip to our sister church will be January 11-23, 2018. This is a great opportunity to serve and encourage people who love Jesus, but have little materially. Pastor Ben will be traveling with the team to encourage Ukraine pastors. If you are interested in going, please contact Leo Pederson. If you are unable to join the team, your financial gifts would greatly encourage the group going. The team will need finances for

flights, interpreter fees, transportation, and food. Items the team would like to purchase include Russian tracts, Mission Balls, clothing, prayer shawls, and food to distribute. If you would like to give to the team for expenses, please leave your donations in the church office.

MISSION PROJECT: HELP NEEDEDMISSION PROJECT: HELP NEEDED Living Stone Prison Church in Springfield, SD is remodeling an area in the prison to make a permanent house of worship and classrooms. We need help from now through November with this remodel job. If you can help one day or several days, we would appreciate all help. We will be removing two walls and a false ceiling, installing new lighting, building new classrooms and offices, and putting down new flooring. If you would like to help, please contact Ruth Wiersma at 605-366-3624.
