The D÷v÷dends School Volunteer Program is a district-wide effort that encourages and promotes

community involvement in the Seminole County Public Schools. Thousands of students have received

individual help and attention so vital to their success, while hundreds of teachers have enjoyed and

appreciated the "extra pairs of hands."

Register today to become a D÷v÷dends School Volunteer because TOGETHER WE SHINE!!!!

All Dividend volunteers are required to re-activate their applications each year. You can register

online, by going to www.scps.k12.fl.us and selecting the Dividend School Volunteer on main page. Look

for the Dividend logo on the next page and click on it to begin your application process. Please contact the

Dividends office at 407-320-0178 for further questions.

MAT H CORNER Have you noticed Math classrooms have flipped from teacher-centered to more

student-centered places, with an emphasis on problem-solving? Our Math Florida Standards that align

to the Common Core focus not just on the "how" of mathematics education, as our generation was

taught, but also the "why." To prepare students for an increasingly complex world, classroom teachers

are asking students to solve real-world problems and explain how they solved those problems. Students

are being asked to communicate through the language of mathematics, con-

struct arguments, and give reasoning behind their thought processes. They are

learning that there can be several ways to solve a problem. We know this can

be a challenge, particularly for students who do not have strong reading and

verbal skills, but please trust as we create a balanced experience in math. For

more information contact Mrs. Neff, Math Coach at Highlands at 407-746-6711.

Students are getting ready for Red Ribbon Week. At school, students will engage in activities that pro-

mote a drug free and healthy lifestyle. Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives

of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena,

angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol

of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America. In

1988, NFP sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a cata-

Fuel Up to Play 60: A Healthy Start to the Day As a parent, you have a more direct connection with

your child than anyone else in their lives. You can ele-vate the importance of healthy eating and physical activ-ity to your child in order to give them the boost to suc-

ceed both in the classroom and throughout their lives. Make sure your children eat a healthy breakfast every day! Breakfast eaters tend to have more adequate nutrient intake. Some children who eat school breakfast say they are more energetic and are better able to pay atten-

tion in school. And school breakfast can help students learn!

Seminole County School Board mandates the establishment of a School Advisory Council (SAC) in each district

school, to serve in an advisory capacity to the principal. The purpose of the SAC is to assist in the development of

the educational programs, the School Improvement Plan (required by Florida State Sunshine Law) and to advise

the school on budgetary allocations and disbursement of funds as allocated by the state legislature. Our SAC at

Highlands Elementary works to promote communication and involvement between the School and the local com-

munity. SAC Membership is comprised of school personnel (administrative, instructional and non-instructional,)

parent and community members . We currently meet the 1st Tuesday of each month. All meetings are open to the

public and visitors are encouraged to attend. Please contact Hope Sparrow at 407-746-6707 with any questions.
