‘To keep women’s words alive and powerful’ – is a quote from Ursula K Le Guin’s essay ‘Prospects for Women in Writing’ in Dancing at the Edge of the World (1989). Le Guin saw this as ‘our job as writers and readers for the next fifteen years, and the next fifty’. SWW is doing its best! An exciting time is coming up for the Society with the presentation of the 2016 Book Awards in October in the categories of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, young adult and children’s literature. Since many of the prizewinning authors will be present at the meeting, there will be neither a Guest Speaker nor a Keynote Speaker to allow plenty of time to introduce the authors and judges and celebrate this exciting line-up of women’s writing.

The short listed authors are (in alphabetical order):

Non Fiction: Sue Castrique (Under the Colony’s Eye); Ann Howard (You’ll be sorry. How World War II changed women’s lives); Rosalind Meyer (Rosie’s War); Susan P Ramage (Kokoda Secret: Ian Hutchison, Australian Hero);

Fiction: Isolde Martyn (The Golden Widows); Johanna Nicholls (The Lace Balcony and Golden Hope); Libby Sommer (My Year With Sammy).

Poetry: Colleen Keating (A Call to Listen); Marilyn Peck (A Girl in the River); Cynthia Rowe (Floating Nest); Karen Throssell (Motherhood Statement).

Young Adults: Libby Hathorn (Eventual Poppy Day); Pamela Rushby (The Ratcatcher’s Daughter and Flora’s War)

Children: Susanne Gervay (Being Jack); Libby Hathorn (Outside, illustrated by Ritva Voutila, and Incredibilia, illustrated by Gaye Chapman’).

The Society would like to thank Rosalind Shabanee Meyer most sincerely for her generous sponsorship of the 2016 Book Awards.

At the October workshop, ‘Sydney Life: Sources in the City Archives’, City of Sydney Historian, Dr Lisa Murray will introduce participants to some of the key resources for Sydney held in the city council archives, including maps and photographs, details of businesses, letters of complaint and staff job descriptions. Dr Murray’s work bridges the gap between academic history and popular history and the workshop will be of interest to both the fiction and non-fiction writers.

October’s festivities will be followed by the launch in November of INK 3 by renowned author Di Morrissey. INK 3 is an anthology of the prize-winning entries in the SWW 90th anniversary 2015 writing competitions – creative non-fiction, short stories and poetry – following in the illustrious footsteps of the women who contributed to INK! and INK No.2.
