Church Newsletter October 2015

It's a busy weekend for United Methodist Men October 10th and 11th. On Saturday the 10th men from both FUMC and Central churches will run the Dunking Booth at the Crazy Water Festival. All men are encouraged to sign up to help and work a shift.

On Sunday the 11th they will meet at 7:30 am at Central for their monthly meeting. Come out and enjoy a great breakfast and wonderful fellowship. As always, invite a friend!

“The Church with a Warm Heart”

It’s that time again! The fun and crazy Crazy Water Festival will be on October 10th. We need EVERYONE to come out and be a part of this great opportunity to raise some money for our missions, to meet our neighbors, and to let folks know that we care about our community. Wear a church tee shirt, if you have one—but more importantly wear a smile and the love of Christ —and share them!

We are again in charge of the children’s area, and Kelli Huseman has picked some great inflatables for the kids to enjoy. We need people to work shifts taking tickets and overseeing the games so no one gets hurt and everyone has fun. We will begin setting up at 3 p.m. on Friday. We need folks to be at the church to help load up tables, chairs, canopies, etc. The first shift needs to be at Crazy Water by 8:30 Saturday morning to finish setting up.

This year we are also “manning” a couple of entry gates. As you know, admission is paid with either canned food or money. This year the canned food will go to the Center of Life for their food pantry, and the proceeds will be split between that organization and BackPack Buddies.

The Methodist Men are hosting the dunking booth again this year, so they, too, could use people to sign up for a shift to help with that fun activity.

There are sign-up sheets on the bulletin board outside the church office.

PLEASE, please, please—we need everyone’s help!

Operation Christmas Shoebox

Our church is again participating in the Operation Christmas Shoebox program for children. If you’d like to fill a shoebox, we have some of the official boxes available for use. Just pick one up from the hall outside the church office. Amanda Daniell is our local

What a month it has been! My heart is full of gratitude. I am so grateful to all the loyal members of our church family who worked so hard to make Mineral Wells Idol such a success. I am especially grateful to Sue Overton who had the vision, the faith, and the determination to make it all come together. I am also thankful for Adam Hull and for all the contestants that shared their talent with us. Thank you to our wonderful judges. I am also very grateful to our community for their generosity. As most of you know, Mineral Wells Idol grossed $5,000! I am also very grateful to the Rotary Club of Mineral Wells for choosing Back Pack Buddies as their District Matching Grant project for this year. We received a wonderful grant in the amount of $3,000. They also were generous with their time. They packed over 270 bags in one night! Thank you to the Rotary.

We are currently supplying weekend food for over 200 students per week. Due to the generosity of our church members and the community, we have the resources to finish this semester. But we still need to keep working on funds for next semester. The Crazy Water Festival committee has generously said that if we will work two gates during the festival, we will receive half of the admissions. We need 16 people to work two hour shifts that day. There will be tables and chairs at the gates. If you are not already committed to other activities, please sign up for one of these shifts. This is a great opportunity we have been given.

Please continue to pray for this mission and the children we serve.

With much gratitude, Judy Jackson, Chairman

This program accepts both monetary and food donations. It costs $3 per child each week. Food provided includes pudding or fruit cups, dried fruit, Poptarts, cheese crackers (no peanut butter due to allergies), Vienna sausages, or individual snack packages.

Fellowship Meal to honor

This will be a tribute to Lianne so please make plans to attend. If you would like to show your appreciation, bring cards or remembrances for Lianne.

Bell Choir practice is 7:15 pm

Our Healthy Church Initiative Coach Paula Johnson had to cancel our planned dinner meeting Sept. 24th due to illness. We will reschedule soon. Those serving on the various teams are strongly encouraged to develop their progress reports and keep everyone apprised of what's happening with our congregation.

A word of appreciation to Pastor Lianne and the members of FUMC for the gracious remembrances expressed at the memorial for David Thomason. The food you provided following the gravesite service was unexpected, but greatly appreciated. May God bless you and your faithful service to Him. Thank you, so much. Mary Jantzen, [email protected]

Pat Sweet wants to thank everyone for the cards and well wishes she has received since moving to Fort Worth, but she’s afraid she can’t respond to each one. She would enjoy calls and visits. Her new address is Brookdale, Tanglewood Oaks Senior Living Solutions, 2698 South Hulen Street, Ft. Worth, TX 76109, (817) 922-9559. Pat's cell phone# is (940) 682-8777.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all who helped put on Mineral Wells Idol. This project was put together in only seven weeks and wouldn't have happened at all if it hadn't been for the cooperation and hard work of so many of our members. It was definitely worth the trouble as we raised just less than $5,000 for Back Pack Buddies and also made a positive impression on the community. A special thank you to Neal who not only helped me, but put up with me while I was trying to organize the event and another to Judy Jackson. Without her help, it would not have come together. Thanks also go out to Adam Hull, Jeff & Jolene Williams, Rick Jackson, Gary Lovell, Joe & Jamie Novak, Kelli & Troy Huseman, Shauna Bradshaw and FUMC Youth, Tonya Gary, David May, Sharon & Terry Garcia, Jeri Calcote, Tammy Crawford, Joy Eaton and Jason Nesmith. If I have forgotten anyone, please forgive me. We are already planning a bigger and better show next year so make plans now to be a part of this great event and keep in mind people in the county that might be a good entry. Again, thanks to everyone! God is good! Sue Overton

Mix and Mingle Join us after Sunday School and before worship for Mix and Mingle — a snack, coffee, juice and conversation! Say hello to someone you don’t know. If you’d like to provide goodies one Sunday, please let Geneva Dow know.

Altar Flowers Take a moment each Sunday to notice the lovely altar flowers provided by Dwain Eaton and Cole's Flowers. These beautiful floral arrangements are then shared with others so the beauty just keeps flowing. Let us know if you would like to share the flowers with someone who needs a little "beauty" in their life.

Communion The privilege of serving Holy Communion can be a blessing to those who participate. Sign the sheet on the bulletin board outside the office if you would like to serve one month. NO experience necessary, just a willingness to serve.

The children continue to meet each Wednesday evening for WOW. Snack Supper at 5:30 and children's lesson and activity from 6:00 to 7:00. All children are invited to join us for the fun and cool fellowship. Also, invited a buddy or friend to come with you.

Our annual Trunk or Treat event will be Wednesday, October 28th, on the east side parking lot. Come out in your best costume for food, games, contests, and a great time. We will have a costume contest, a vehicle decorating contest, a cleverest game contest, and much more. Be thinking how you and your family and friends can participate this year. For questions or ideas, see Vicki Gregory or call (940) 452-0810. Please sign up to help with a meal or a dessert to feed our WOW group. The sign up is on the bulletin board by the office or see Vicki.

Youth meet upstairs until 7:30 pm with Youth Director Amanda Daniell.

Choir practice starts @ 7 pm, backpacks can be packed for BackPack Buddies and Prayer Shawl workers meet on the last Wednesday of the month. Pick an activity to join and have your evening meal provided.

Amazon Smile, An Easy Way to

Give to the Church

It’s just 85 days until Christmas, and some of you "overachievers" have probably already begun shopping. All kidding aside, just a reminder of a wonderful program that allows you to give to the church while you shop. If you use Amazon, this is a very easy way to donate to our congregation. Simply go to smileamazon.com. When you sign in, you will be asked to pick your charity. Do a search for First United Methodist Church Mineral Wells. Select that and Amazon will then donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases.

Project 365 What an amazing transformation a group of Christians with garden tools, paint scrapers, and paint brushes can make! This is our Project 365 house, that so many in our congregation gave of their time and energy to work at making new again. Wes and Shauna Bradshaw did a great job heading up this project, and we are grateful for their leadership.

We even got a mention at the Mineral Wells Chamber of Commerce banquet in September for the work we did to help make our community a nicer place!
