We are equally acclaimed for our vibrant new productions of musicals from the “Golden Age of Broadway” and contemporary classics. These signature revivals enthrall fans of these enduring works and introduce these great shows to new generations of musical theater lovers. Our celebrated educational programs serve more than 74,000 young people each year through a host of projects including our Adventure Musical Theater Touring Company, The 5th Avenue Awards, and the unique Rising Star Project. We are the largest arts employer in the Pacific Northwest with more than 800 actors, singers, dancers, musicians, creative artists, theatrical technicians and arts professionals working for us each season.

As a non-profit theater company supported by the community, we enjoy the patronage of more than 25,000 season subscribers (one of the largest theater subscriptions in America). More than 300,000 audience members attend our performances each year.

OUR HISTORIC THEATER

A beautiful Seattle landmark, The 5th Avenue Theatre’s breathtaking design was inspired by ancient Imperial China’s most stunning architectural achievements, including the magnificent Forbidden City. Built in 1926 for vaudeville and silent pictures, The 5th Avenue Theatre reigned for decades as Seattle’s favorite movie palace. In 1979, 43 companies and community leaders formed the non-profit 5th Avenue Theatre Association. Their goal was to restore the theater to its original splendor. The 5th Avenue Theatre re-opened in 1980 as Seattle’s premier home for musical theater.

The 5th Avenue Theatre gratefully acknowledges our 43 original founders and sponsors. Please visit www.5thavenue.org for specific information on these important companies and individuals.

THE MUSICAL AND WORLD WAR II

This year marked the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II with retrospectives, ceremonies and commemorations around the world. So it is

entirely appropriate that our next two productions—this world premiere production of Waterfall and the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic The Sound Of Music—are set in that tumultuous time. The stories of both of these shows take place in the late 1930s when the winds of war were gathering force, but their events play out on different continents and in very contrasting cultures. I think it will be fascinating to experience them back to back!

These are, of course, not the only shows to use World War II as a backdrop for dynamic musical drama. Three other legendary shows immediately come to mind—South Pacific, On The Town, and Cabaret.

Only one of these shows was actually written during the war. When On The Town opened on Broadway in 1942 the war was in full swing and an Allied victory was by no means a safe bet. So the lighthearted story of three sailors on a 24-hour leave in “New York, New York” had very serious undertones for the audience. These young men had to cram as much life as possible into that one day because the next morning they would be shipping out—and who knows what fate might have in store for them? The 5th Avenue produced a thrilling revival On the Town in 2010 as part of our Seattle Celebrates Bernstein Festival and this past season a Broadway revival received great acclaim.

There were other war-themed musicals written during the conflict, but serious, reflective shows like South Pacific would have to wait until the war was over. This was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first musical set in this period and it was inspired by the stories of James Michener who had been stationed in the South Pacific during the war. The show has an amazing ability to transport us to that time and that place and deal with issues of racial prejudice and conflicting cultures in the process.

The Sound of Music is so full of song and joy that it’s easy to forget that the Nazi menace that drives the story was still fresh in its first audiences’ minds—when the show opened in 1959 the war had ended only 14 years before.

Another WWII-themed musical is just about to open on Broadway: Allegiance. With a book by Marc Acito (who penned our new musical A Room with a View in 2014) it stars George Takei of Star Trek fame and is based on his experience of being sent to a Japanese internment camp during the war.

World War II looms so large in our nation’s psyche that it’s only natural that The Musical—our great American art form—comes back to it again and again. An epic story requires an epic canvas, and musicals have the ability to mobilize all the visual, audial, and kinetic arts to portray events of great scale and scope. Meanwhile songs can take us inside the minds of people great and small, caught in the tides of history. We feel what they felt, we rejoice and mourn with them. That is the power of musical theater. No other form can accomplish so much.

We are proud to bring you another fascinating story set in that momentous time. Enjoy Waterfall!

A WORLD IN TRANSITION By KWAPI VENGESAYI, Community Engagement Specialist

Everyone enjoys a good love story told well and on this alone, Waterfall delivers. But beyond its captivating story of forbidden love, Waterfall possesses a socially conscious essence as it moves from Bangkok to Tokyo in the 1930s, exploring issues of culture and identity, race, globalization, immigration and the eternal tug of war between tradition and modernity. These themes not only capture the tensions of the times, but seem quite familiar and relevant to the present.

This political backdrop should come as no suprise to those familiar with Thai novelist Siburapha’s body of work. Based on his best-selling book Behind the Painting, this musical tells a beautiful love story while staying true to what Siburapha was known for: his dedication to social justice and his ability to write captivating love stories while embedding sometimes dangerous messages that spoke to inequality, politics, and cultural identity.

During the 1920s and ’30s, American culture and influence began to penetrate the Asian world. From manufactured goods to music, dance, and film, American products and the American lifestyle spread across formerly closed borders at an impressive pace. In some places Western culture was well received—especially by the young. In others it was resented and resisted. We find both of these extremes in Waterfall as we to get to know Noppon, the love-struck Thai student who proclaims, “I’m American!” and the Japanese Foreign Minister, Takamoto, who finds American manners to be “atrocious” and “their ethics even worse.”

In fairness to Minister Takamoto, there is a sad history that informs us as to why he and his nation have such negative sentiments towards the United States. Leading up to the 1930s, Western powers had treated immigrants from Japan in a way that was hostile and discriminatory. In I905 California passed anti-Japanese legislation and a year later, San Francisco’s school board ordered Japanese and Asian children to attend segregated schools. In 1919, Western nations rejected Japan’s request to include a racial equality clause in the League of Nations covenant and in 1924, the United States passed a law severely limiting Japanese immigration. This series of events brings us to the Japan we find in Waterfall, nationalistic and

ethnocentric. Kumiko, a Japanese-American woman, speaks tothis racially tense side of America as she sings, “America will break your heart.”

Waterfall dramatizes the coming together of three different worlds: American, Japanese, and Siamese which leads to some volatile exchanges. But not all cultural interactions in Waterfall are tense encounters. The relationships between Noppon, Katherine—an American woman—and her husband Chao Khun, sometimes transcend the national and racial divisions of their cultures.

Culturally, however, we do find Katherine struggling. She is torn between being herself—something her Thai husband encourages—and her desire to embrace the customs and expectations of women and wives in Siam. She even asks Nuan, her servant, to teach her how to be a proper Thai wife.

In the early 1930s, Siam began to suffer the effects of the Great Depression. This economic crisis became the catalyst

to armed revolution as frustration with the monarchy, rampant government corruption and ineptitude, and the long-suppressed need for social change ignited the demand for a constitutional form of governance. A relatively bloodless regime change resulted in a dynamic shift in how Siam saw itself and how it wanted to be perceived. Waterfall captures this struggle between tradition and modernity as Siam begins to transition into Thailand. The journey is a difficult one for Noppon, who finds himself torn between the new government’s need to lead the Thai people into the 20th century and the unknown effects that modernity will have on the people, the culture, and their ancient heritage.

It is interesting to note that this continued evolution and change has been synonymous with this nation. Since the 1932 revolution, it has had many forms of government, ranging from military dictatorships to electoral democracies. Always, however, a hereditary monarch descending from King Mongut (the monarch from The King and I) has been, at least ceremonially, head of state. The country has also changed names. In 1939, Siam renamed itself Thailand, only to revert to Siam in 1945. Four years later it became Thailand again, a name it holds to this day.

American musical theater has always been a powerful vehicle for social commentary and dialogue. Embedded in those love stories that enamor audiences, we often find conversations about us—society. Waterfall continues in this tradition as it navigates the complexities of a tumultuous time in history.

DAVID SHIRE

MALTBY AND SHIREThe collaboration of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire is one of the longest-running “acts” in show business, outlasting the partnerships of Gilbert & Sullivan, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe and—well, just about any other team you could name. That fact speaks to the deep artistic affinity between the two men, who began writing theater scores at Yale in the late 1950s and now, more than a half century later, are unveiling their latest creation, Waterfall.

As undergraduates, they wrote two musicals, Cyrano and Grand Tour. They met up again in New York City, where their musical The Sap of Life was produced off-Broadway in 1961. Several shows followed. Then Shire found work as a rehearsal pianist for Funny Girl, and eventually became Barbra Streisand’s regular accompanist and occasional arranger. Over the next decade, Streisand would record five Maltby/Shire songs, including “Autumn” (their first collaboration at Yale) and “Starting Here, Starting Now,” featured on her 1964 television special and companion album Color Me Barbra.

In 1970, Shire moved to California to write film scores, eventually composing music for over 42 features and 90 television programs. In 1980, “It Goes Like It Goes,” his theme song from Norma Rae (lyrics by Norman Gimbel), won the Oscar for Best Song.

Maltby remained on the east coast to pursue a life in the theater as a writer/director, and for a while their careers diverged as each found success in new ventures. Then in 1976 Maltby was asked to stage a revue of songs from the Maltby/Shire catalogue. Shire came back from Hollywood to provide the arrangements, and the show, Starting Here, Starting Now, was a great success. A second Maltby/Shire revue, Closer than Ever, would appear in 1989. It enjoyed a healthy run, and won Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical and Best Score.

Two other Maltby-directed revues have won Tony Awards®

for Best Musical: Ain’t Misbehavin’, inspired by Fats Waller’s life and music (for which Maltby won the Tony Award for Best Director), and Fosse, a dance tribute to the great choreographer.

In 1983, Broadway welcomed a new Maltby/Shire musical, Baby, which explored how lives are changed by parenthood.

Maltby had his most impressive success to date with Miss Saigon, for which he wrote the evocative lyrics. It opened on Broadway in 1991 and ran for nearly a decade. The last Maltby/Shire collaboration to reach Broadway was Big (1996).

If the theater gods smile, Waterfall will be the team’s next and perhaps most adventurous production.

( Why Do )

(?)MUSICALS

MATTERMusical theater is one of our great indigenous art forms, born entirely of an American culture of entertainment and exported around the world. It has the power to tell incredible stories, touch the soul and bring light to joy. It is this gift that Waterfall co-director Tak Viravan loves, and the reason that he believes the creation of new musicals is of the utmost importance.

You might call Viravan the Simon Cowell of Thailand. A media mogul with years of experience discovering and molding pop stars and a number of hit TV shows under his belt including The Star—an equivalent of American Idol—on which he discovered Thai superstar Bie Sukrit, he has his finger on the pulse of Thai culture. And Viravan is one of the key players in bringing musical theater to his country’s cultural epicenter.

“When I was twelve, my father took me to see a production of The Sound of Music in San Francisco, and I fell in love with it,” says Viravan, recounting how his love for musical theater was born. “I thought it was magical, visually and musically. I started seeing other musicals in years to come. I found out that musicals were not only magical in what I saw and heard, but also in what I felt. I learned a lot about life through musicals—their messages, how they reflected society and life.”

Musicals have the power to transcend cultural barriers, which is why they have been adopted by so many other countries to tell their own stories. Viravan knew that there would be a home for his beloved art form in Thailand, and helped introduce it to his country. But Viravan says, “With the Thai ways of life and how Thai audiences enjoy entertainment, Thai musicals are more focused on love, and they tend to be more emotional.”

It was for this reason that he brought the beloved Thai novel Behind the Painting to rich musical life in Thailand starring his protégé Bie Sukrit. That musical has now become Waterfall, adapted for a Broadway audience by a team of musical pros. “Turning the show into a Broadway musical was not only my idea, but also Richard Maltby’s and Jack Dalgleish’s. Richard fell in love with the sincerity of the piece and the love story. There hasn’t been this kind of musical on Broadway for a while. And yet, audiences are longing for this kind of show. And with the exotic set up of culture clash—the East and the West—there is an opportunity here to have a luscious, sincere, romantic love story.”

What he hopes audiences will remember of this special new musical? “Beauty. Romance. Cultures. Being who you are, and learning to balance your roots with an ever-changing world.”

FROM AN ARTIST’S PERSPECTIVE: THOM SESMA ON WATERFALLby BRIDGET MORGAN, Public Relations & Communications Manager

“I’ve been associated with Waterfall from its initial reading around a coffee table in Manhattan in 2011,”

...says Thom Sesma, the Broadway star who plays the role of Chao Khun, Katherine’s older husband in the romantic new musical. Sesma fell in love with the work and participated in several subsequent readings and workshops in the years that followed,

leading finally to a collaboration between Pasadena Playhouse and The 5th Avenue Theatre this year.

The musical is a unique collaboration between Broadway greats and Thai entertainment powerhouses, from Tony Award-nominated writing duo Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire to media mogul Tak Viravan and pop superstar Bie Sukrit. “It’s not without its challenges,” Sesma laughs. “There’s language and cultural differences that need to be bridged within the very distinct context of creating an American musical. But given that the show, at least on one level, is about cultural distinctions, the challenges are always worth it—for the piece itself, and for each individual artist. Broadening one’s horizons intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, if you will, is nourishment for a creative person. It’s even more so for a creative team, and invaluable for a piece like this.”

Waterfall had its first fully staged presentation at the Pasadena Playhouse this summer. The creative

team will take what they learned from audiences there and make changes to the story, the design and the staging. But Sesma knows that the heart of this musical will never change. “The show is unapologetically about unqualified love—which is not to say its simple-minded or naïve or manipulative. But it asks audiences to be open to the simple idea of how romantic love can be transformative to an individual and how that can change the world.”

And of the audiences who saw the show in Pasadena, Sesma raves “they loved it. It’s a credit to the writing, too,” he adds, “that this very ‘traditionally’ romantic love story is wrapped up in a kind of mystery that kept the audiences so engrossed. So many people came up to me and said this was like a great Cinemascope romance that sweeps you away to another time and place. It has one of the most glorious and rhapsodic scores in musical theater in years. Some of these songs are beautiful beyond description.”

HOW TO SUCCEED IN SHOW BIZ By BRIDGET MORGAN, Public Relations and Communications Manager

“I’m just in love with the city of Seattle and the artists that create here,” says Eric Ankrim, star of The 5th’s upcoming production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. And it’s no wonder. The talented theater artist is one of the most in-demand professionals in the area. At The 5th, audiences love Ankrim not only for his incredible stage presence (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, First Date), but for his talent in the director’s chair (Grease, ELF – The Musical).

Taking center stage as J. Pierrepont Finch is coming full circle for Ankrim. “This show is actually the first show I ever auditioned for and performed in, back in my sophomore year of high school. In many ways that experience was the reason I pursued theater moving forward.”

That high school production hooked Ankrim for the same reason that theater continues to be a passion in his life: relationships. “The collaborative spirit of theater-making creates my favorite kind of friendship and bond. It’s playful and serious, it’s heartfelt and silly, it’s passionate and care free, all at once. The trusting, loving collaboration that theater requires of its artists is something everyone can benefit from in any field.”

“I’ve been cultivating collaborative relationships in this city for 12 years now,” he adds. “I think those relationships and those artists are the reason I am able to do the work I do. I honestly work with some of my best friends on a regular basis, and it’s that type of environment that allows people to be their best selves.”

Ankrim has a particular visible joy in performing, as though every part of him comes alive in the characters he portrays. This is, no doubt, one of the reasons why audiences will love his performance in the exuberant How to Suceed… His secret to this boundless energy onstage? “All I try to do is deal with what is right in front of me, and not waste any energy on things outside my control. The actor’s job is a relatively simple one, and the more we free ourselves to forget everything else, the more fun—and frankly, more easy—the job becomes!”

And on this role, Ankrim has this to say: “To be playing J. Pierrepont Finch on a stage I consider my artistic home, directed by my friend and mentor, Bill Berry... it’s way too much of a dream come true to even put into words.”

HARMONY IN THE HALLWAYS: CONNECTING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO MUSICAL THEATER

By ORLANDO MORALES, Director of Rising Star Project and Internships

At six thirty-five in the morning on any given school day, you’ll find Heath Thompson in front of a heavy-eyed group of teenagers at Kent–Meridian High School. It’s time for vocal warm-ups. Gradually, amid a couple of yawns and a few tired sighs, creaky voices give way to rising scales, arpeggios, and eventual melodies.

“It never feels natural to be singing so early in the morning,” laments Thompson. “But it teaches my students discipline—in a way nothing else could.” But he will admit that the coffee machine is as essential to the music department’s success as their piano.

This fall marks Thompson’s tenth year of predawn choir classes and music education in the Kent School District. It also marks the fifth year since he and his students first came in contact with the Rising Star Project. In the program’s first year, one of Thompson’s choir students was cast in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!

“I remember him coming out onstage in his mutton chops as this old curmudgeon… And there was a great sense of pride. For him to be able to say he had stepped out on that stage, it meant so much. Being able to actually see him have that experience was… amazing.”

Thompson is eager to profess his love for his students and their unique school community. But, like so many educators, he struggles with the day-to-day realities of teaching in a community that many would label as underserved.

“Kent–Meridian is the most diverse school in Washington State. And it is a high school that doesn’t have much of a musical theater program.” Thompson cites many factors that hinder the arts, despite unwavering interest from students and teachers. “Socioeconomic status, location, and even cultural barriers can shift concerns away from the arts. Just getting by, day-to-day, is challenging enough. But for that very reason, if you want to see a school that absolutely needs additional support for its arts programs—you don’t have to go much farther than KM.”

Last season, the Rising Star Project welcomed nearly one hundred students into The 5th Avenue Theatre to mount a full-scale production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. The theater also partnered with educators to bring nearly 2,000 students from over 20 local schools to see the production created by their peers. None of this would be possible without the dedication and support of our partner teachers. They make amazing things happen for students every day. This is a snapshot of one of them.

“...IT HELPS TO TEACH A STUDENT ABOUT WHAT A SONG MEANS—THEY DON’T NECESSARILY HAVE TO UNDERSTAND ENGLISH TO UNDERSTAND THE ART.”

After a few minutes of conversation with Thompson, you recognize that he has never been one to let systemic challenges derail plans that he has for his students. At the same time, he faces many obstacles that every teacher will sympathize with, but that most people won’t immediately associate with a choir classroom.

“One interesting challenge is working with students that have either just moved to America, or are from such a different culture, and have no concept of rehearsal or performance. I’m working with brilliant students but some are still breaking through American cultural and language barriers. It can be difficult trying to rehearse at the high school level while teaching basic English reading skills at the same time.”

Through the years, however, Thompson has honed his toolbox of strategies.

“I expose my students to musical theater as much as I can. I give students material that they are able to understand emotionally—even if they aren’t necessarily understanding all of the words. Being dramatic transcends the language barrier. And it helps to teach a student about what a song means—they don’t necessarily have to understand English to understand the art.”

Last year, Thompson once again saw one of his students join the cast of the Rising Star Project—this time for a production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. It was also the first year that the school was invited to attend a matinee performance and cheer on their classmate.

“Many of my students had NEVER been in Seattle before. Seeing my students walking up to the theater, past the marquee, and going to experience musical theater for the

first time was inspiring. What was remarkable to me was that they understood the show so well. They GOT Carousel. We talked about the deeper themes in the show—about abuse and forgiveness and the line between those two things—a very complex subject for students to encounter. And in their first show!”

There was one particular student performer that Thompson was glad to see acknowledged by his students: their choir classmate, Curtis, who had been cast in the ensemble.

“There was buzz at the school beforehand. But especially when they got into The 5th Avenue Theatre, got into Seattle—they understood how big of an opportunity it was for Curtis and how meaningful an experience it was for him. They were able to see a student from their school up there, and they knew that a piece of that show belonged to them. I will never forget that.”

Rising Star Project is made possible by a generous grant from The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation and with additional support from The Herman and Faye Sarkowsky Charitable Foundation, The Boeing Company, Susie and Phil Stoller, and Safeco Insurance.

WHAT DOES COMING TO THE 5TH MEAN FOR YOU?

It’s a place where I can be totally immersed in another world, away from my daily routine, where I am transported and entertained. I have great memories of being at the re-opening with my dad, who had been involved in the theater restoration campaign.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE 5TH?

The 5th does an amazing job at educating not only their subscribers but also in engaging and cultivating the youth in our community. I happen to love new work and was excited to participate in NextFest this summer.

WHY DO YOU SUPPORT THE 5TH?

I love that The 5th invites their donors for an inside peek of their work, like attending the read/sing thru rehearsal! The entire team is very inclusive and welcoming; their love of theater is contagious!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE MUSICAL AT THE 5TH?

It’s actually the process of making a musical that is my favorite aspect. Last year I had the opportunity to watch A Room with a View develop from workshop to Main Stage production.

A native of Seattle, Cynthia Stroum has been an angel investor, philanthropist and U.S. Ambassador. Previous to her business and political ventures, Cynthia worked in the film industry and has continued her commitment to the arts, making her Broadway producing debut in 2004 with Broadway hit, A Raisin in the Sun, earning her a Tony® nomination.

DAVID ARMSTRONG (Executive Producer and Artistic Director) Since his appointment in 2000, Armstrong has guided The 5th Avenue to a position as one of the nation’s leading musical theater companies, acclaimed for both its development and production of new works and its innovative stagings of classic musicals. As a director, he has created memorable 5th Avenue productions of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well & Living in Paris, A Room with a View; Oliver!; Candide; Hello, Dolly!; Sweeney Todd; White Christmas; Hair; Mame; A Little Night Music; The Secret

Garden; Anything Goes; Company; The Rocky Horror Show; Pippin; Vanities; Yankee Doodle Dandy!; and Saving Aimee, which made its Broadway debut as Scandalous under Armstrong’s direction in November 2012. Prior to The 5th, he spent nearly 20 years as a freelance director, choreographer, and librettist. His work has been seen in New York, Los Angeles and at many leading regional theaters including The Kennedy Center, Ordway Center, Ford’s Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse, and New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. From 1990 through 1995, he served as artistic director of Cohoes Music Hall in upstate NY. Armstrong has also written the books for the musicals The Wonder Years (winner of seven Drama-Logue Awards), Gold Rush, and Yankee Doodle Dandy!

BERNADINE (BERNIE) C. GRIFFIN (Managing Director) first joined The 5th Avenue in 2002 as director of theater advancement and development. She was appointed managing director in January 2010 and is responsible for the administrative, fundraising, information services and facility operations, as well as oversight of all activities related to the Board of Directors. During her tenure, The 5th Avenue has grown from a $10 million to a $25 million organization. She brings to her position 30 years of fundraising and arts management

experience. Prior to The 5th Avenue, she served as director of development for the prestigious Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, as well as for The Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach, California. Before moving to California, she served at the Seattle Symphony where she is proud to have been part of the team that built Benaroya Hall. In addition to the Symphony, Griffin worked for the Tony Award-winning Seattle Repertory Theatre, as well as Tony Randall’s National Actors Theatre in New York. She began her career at the University of Denver. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington and is proud to have been born and raised in Walla Walla, Washington. She is married to award-winning actor Seán G. Griffin.

BILL BERRY (Producing Artistic Director) served as The 5th Avenue’s associate producing artistic director and casting director from 2002 through 2009. During that time, he directed productions of West Side Story (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wonderful Town (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wizard of Oz and Smokey Joe’s Café. In 2014, he made his Broadway debut as the director of the hit musical First Date at the Longacre Theatre. Berry’s directing work has been seen at theaters across the country, most recently at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse where

he directed a critically acclaimed production of On the Town. Directing highlights include Cabaret performed at The 5th Avenue Theatre, St. Paul’s Ordway Center (Ivey Award), San Jose’s American Musical Theatre, and Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars, as well as the smash hits Little Shop of Horrors, First Date and RENT at The 5th. From 2002 to 2009, he served as the producing director for The 5th Avenue’s education and outreach programs. During that time he significantly expanded the scope and impact of these initiatives, including spearheading the creation of Fridays at The 5th and The 5th Avenue Awards, honoring excellence in high school musical theater, as well as substantially increasing the reach of the Adventure Musical Theater Touring Company throughout the Northwest. These programs combined now serve over 70,000 students annually. He also initiated the Show Talk series, which seeks to deepen the theater-going experience. Prior to his work at The 5th Avenue Theatre, Berry was a freelance theater artist based in New York City.
