Daystar University was once again on the map as it hosted the cream of the crop chess players in the Eastern African region during the 4th Edition of the Daystar Chess Open tournament on September 26-27, 2015 in Athi River campus.

The event saw participating players come from Kenya (Daystar

University, Strathmore University, Kenyatta University and Makini

Schools), and Equity bank chess team, Uganda represented by

Arthur and Elijah Emojong of the Ugandan Chess Federation,

Tanzania and South Sudan. It consisted of separate categories such

as the Prestige Section, which was World Chess Federation (FIDE)

Rated (meaning participants had a chance to get a professional

rating), Open Section, Ladies and Junior Section.

Daystar University won the 1st prize in the University tier

earning itself a trophy at home. Second in position was Strathmore

University and third position went to Kenyatta University. The

Prestige section winner walked away with Ksh. 30,000 while

the Open section winner walked away with Ksh 25,000. The

Ladies section winner walked away with Ksh. 20,000 whereas

the Juniors went home with trophies and certificates. Equity bank

won the best institution prize.

Infospot caught up with Karan Christie, an alumnus of

Daystar who is also a member of Chess Kenya and a key co-

founder of the Daystar Chess Open. He reminisced the days

when he was the captain of Daystar Chess team in 2012, and

how he took up the challenge of forming a winning team and

eventually hosting the inaugural Chess Tournament at Daystar. “It

is wonderful to see how my successors have done a great job

hosting the event continuously up to the 4th time this year, with

a tremendous support from Daystar University and Chess Kenya

Federation,” he said.

The chairman of Chess Kenya Githinji Hinga noted that

Daystar Chess Open is a big tourney in the federation’s calendar

of events. “We value Daystar University so much for being a

consistent partner in organizing this event,” he told Infospot. “This

is an evident success story as it shows clearly what a club can

achieve when backed up by an institution like Daystar University,”

he added. He concluded by inviting more players to learn how

to play the board game saying that it is a rewarding, fun and

thrilling sport that helps one’s thought process.

It was a busy schedule for the Daystar Falcons last weekend as various teams donned their different jerseys to represent the university in various sports.

The Falcons Rugby team, who has now shifted gears to the 15s aside version of the game, played host to Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA) in a nationwide league fixture on September 26, 2015. The game ended 11-15 in favor of the visitors.

The Falcons soccer team was forced to divide their squad on September 26, 2015 as it had both a Football Kenya Federation League and Kenya University Sports Association League tie on the same day. They were on duty against Casif Football Club in the FKF tie, which ended 1-1. The KUSA one against Machakos Football club ended with one goal apiece as well. On the next day, it was full house as the Falcons overwhelmed Umma University 2-0 in subsequent FKF tie.

Meanwhile the Falcons Hockey Men’s team kicked off their KUSA league with a 1-0 win against Technical University of Kenya on September 26, 2015. They then edged out Karate Axiom 1-0 on the following day at a Kenya National Hockey league encounter. The Falcons ladies on the other hand looked

sluggish as they fell to big girls Telkom Orange and Kenyatta University in the Kenya Hockey Union league and KUSA league respectively.

Elsewhere the Falcons Volleyball team registered mixed results in their first KUSA league games on September 26, 2015. The ladies were outstanding in their match against African International University where they won 3-0 with scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-17 in each set. The men were however unlucky, as they were downed 3-0 by Multimedia University registering scores of 12-25, 14-25 and 19-25 in each set.

Lastly, the newly formed Daystar University Nairobi Campus football team received a sponsorship package from The Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives Organization (KUSCCO), the umbrella organization of SACCOS in Kenya on the 25th of September 2015, thanks to the combined effort of a Communication student, Wayne Ongara, Sports Secretary, Geoffrey Nyaga and the DUSA Nairobi Campus President, Job Mwangi.

The sponsorship package is going to go a long way in ensuring that the players are properly kitted and fully equipped with the necessary gear in training that will aid in their match preparation. The items included Playing kit, footballs, cones, and training bibs.

NEWLY ACQUIRED TITLES NOW AVAILABLE ON OUR SHELVES

Toxic Charity: How the Church Hurts Those They Help and How to Reverse by Robert D. LuptonVeteran urban activist Robert Lupton reveals the shockingly toxic effects that modern charity has upon the very people meant to benefit from it. Toxic Charity provides proven new models for charitable groups who want to help—not sabotage—those whom they desire to serve. Lupton, the founder of FCS Urban Ministries (Focused Community Strategies) in Atlanta, the voice of the Urban Perspectives newsletter, and the author of Compassion, Justice and the Christian Life, has been at the forefront of urban ministry activism for forty years. Now, in the vein of Jeffrey Sachs’s The End of Poverty, Richard Stearns’s The Hole in Our Gospel, and Gregory Boyle’s Tattoos on the Heart, his groundbreaking Toxic Charity shows us how to start serving needy and impoverished members of our communities in a way that will lead to lasting, real-world change.

African Development: Making Sense of the Issues and Actors (2011) by Todd J. Moss In the ongoing battle against global poverty, the countries of Africa continue to present the greatest challenge. African Development offers a comprehensive introduction to the issues, actors, and institutions interacting across the diverse continent. Each chapter is organized around three fundamental questions: Where are we now? How did we get to this point? What are the current debates? Interspersed throughout are vivid sidebars acquainting the student with ten well-known “big men” and ten equally important but lesser known African actors. The text also includes the ABCs of development jargon.

Introduction to Social Problems 2015 by Thomas J. SullivanThis title features an applied approach that looks at the interplay between research and policy in finding solutions, along with a built-in student study guide. The author explores the nature and extent of social problems, documents the advances and setbacks that we have made as a society, and analyzes what works and what doesn’t work regarding solutions to today’s problems. The author, an applied sociologist, shows how scientific research is used to address and correct some of the most difficult and controversial problems confronting the United States and the world today.

The Church in Response to Human Need by Vinay Samuel This is an important contribution to the ongoing discussion of the church’s relationship to social development, this book contains the revised conference proceedings from the consultation “The Church in Response to Human Need,” held in Wheaton, Illinois, in June of 1983.In the papers collected here writers from five continents consider whether the Bible indicates any method for ministry among the poor; the place of the poor in God’s plan; God’s purpose and the movement of human history; the nature of the gospel of the kingdom; and the interrelation of the gospel and human culture. In addition to the individual papers, the book includes the statement “Transformation,” which was produced by the consultation as a whole.
