October will be a busy month for the Chamber with numerous events planned. The High Plains Quilt Festival is sched- uled for Oct. 16-17 at the Jake Lopez Build- ing at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds. Admission is $3. On Thursday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Yam Theatre the HPQF Awards Dinner and Trunk Showing will be held. Tickets are $18. The Peanut Valley Festival kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the fairgrounds and runs through Sunday, Oct. 18. The event is free and includes live music and entertainment, food, craft vendors, kids activities and of course peanut goodies sold by the Portales Woman’s Club. New this year is the Society for Creative Anachronism’s Medieval Village. Members from around the area will dress in period costume and demonstrate many of the day-to -day activities of times past including armor and weaponry of the day. On Friday, Oct. 23 the Ambassadors will hold a Family Movie Night at 6 p.m. at the Yam Theatre. The movie will be a title relat- ed to Halloween appropriate for all ages. No admission is charged. Finally, the month winds up on Friday, Oct. 30 with the Safe Trick-or-Treat night put on by the Chamber, Portales MainStreet and businesses in the downtown area. From 3 -6 p.m. youngsters can stop by participating downtown businesses for treats and other activities. Parents can pick up a map lising the businesses at the Chamber or the Yam Theatre or download one online. Receiving the award from the Ambassadors was store manager Audy Navarro and associate Sabrina Acosta along with Russell Cellular district manager Dennis Davis. The store, located at 1031 W. Second Street was chosen for outstanding customer service. The ribbon cutting was done by Ready Roast CEO Tom Finn, his family and other staff along with Governor Susanna Martinez and other state officials. The company plans to process peanuts this fall and slowly expand operations in the future. Officials announced that they hope to eventually employ as many as 300 includ- ing full time and seasonal workers. Local plant manager will be Jim Lucero. Franchise owner Brian Bailey, along with his family, staff, city officials and Ambassadors cut the ribbon on Domino’s new location in Portales at 515 W. First Street. The store is one of the company’s new “Pizza Theater” locations. It offers dine-in facilities where folks can actually watch the pizza being prepared.
