WELCOME BACK!
The first school week of Term Four is almost
finished and we all know what a busy time is in
front of us – students and staff alike.
Planning for 2015 is well underway, involving
decisions for curriculum, specialist programmes and
staffing. This is not a straightforward process as it is
driven very much by our final enrolment number.
If you know your child will not/may not be
attending Burwood Heights Primary School next
year, I would greatly appreciate knowing.
As part of the preparation for 2015, our Year Six
students will be attending their assigned secondary
college on Tuesday 9th December for their
ORIENTATION DAY.
GRADUATION follows shortly after this on
Monday 15th December.
With our Year Six exiting the school, we commence
the process of welcoming our 2015 Prep students.
The first of the PREP TRANSITION
PROGRAMMES will be from 9.15am to 10.45am
on October 24th.
Other Transition Programmes will be conducted on
31st October, 7th November and 14th November.
A Prep Information Night will be held on Tuesday,
November 11th.
The Art Show, where the talents of our students
will be showcased, is fast-approaching. What a
wonderful evening this promises to be for our
school community on 16th October.
Junior Sports Day is always a fun-filled time for
our Junior school students and their parents and on
21st November we are planning to keep up the
tradition of having fun whilst participating in
sporting activities. More information to follow later.
The Junior School Concert, on 10th December,
promises to be another wonderful evening for the
school community as our Junior School students
perform for us.
The Dance and Glee Concert is a “not-to-be-
missed” event on 2nd December. To see our students
perform at the level they do is extremely moving.
Curriculum Day, election of 2015 School Leaders,
Division Athletics and Graduation are other
important dates to have in mind.
OUTDOOR PLAY AREA FOR PLAY GROUP
Sincere thanks to Julie and Kevin Morrow for
creating a fully-enclosed outdoor play area for the
Play Group. This area is attached to the Hall, where
Play Group is conducted on Tuesdays and Fridays,
and will be easily accessible from the hall.
It has taken many hours of labour and commitment
to build this wonderful environment for our
youngest community members and I am sure all
will thoroughly enjoy the space. The decorative art
work on the wall adds a finishing touch.
Thank you once again Julie and Kevin.
REMINDER
Hats are to be worn when students are outside.
There should be no sharing of hats between
students.

INTERNET SAFETY
Here are some key messages around internet safety
that could help parents help their children.
In addition to following these tips, parents might
want to install filters on their home computers.
1. Don’t let potential problems stop you from
letting your child use technology for their education
and personal interests.
2. Put computers in a communal area of the house
and don’t allow portable internet devices (laptops,
phones, tablets etc.) in the bedroom.
3. Find out what your child is doing online. Talk to
them regularly about what websites they visit and
take the time sit with them as they use the internet.
Make sure you’re familiar with how the sites that
they visit work.
4. Encourage your child to tell you if they ever have
a problem on the internet or if they’re ever unsure
about anything. Reassure them that you won’t take
away their connection to the internet if issues occur.
5. Remind your child to keep personal information
private. YAPPY is a useful acronym to remind
children of the personal information they should not
share on public online spaces (blogs, forums etc.) –
Your full name, address, phone number, passwords,
your plans.
6. Remind your child that not everything on the
internet is true and not all internet users tell the
truth.
7. Don’t support your child to sign up for sites that
are 13+ if they are under age (Facebook, YouTube,
Instagram etc.). Make sure your child sets their
online accounts to private to limit access to people
they know well (when they are old enough to sign
up).
8. Encourage your child to balance their leisure time
so they’re not spending all of their time online.
9. Create your own internet rules for your
household and have your child agree to adhere to
them.
10. Explore government resources for parents so
you can educate yourself and protect your children
on the Cybersmart website.

CRICKET CLINIC
In the last week of Term Three 2014, Daniel Hutton
from Cricket Victoria came to Burwood Heights
Primary School to lead a cricket clinic to some very
excited students. We were also lucky enough to
have Andrew and Seamus on work experience and
Paul Allen from Nunawading Cricket Club who
gave some expert advice and plenty of
encouragement during the sessions.
Daniel started the clinic with some high- paced
warm up activities that soon got faces flushed and
heart rates up. After the warm- ups, Daniel led the
students in a number of drills to improve ball
handling skills. A highlight of the day was watching
the students try to catch the ball behind their backs!
The clinic concluded with a memorable game of
‘Rapid Fire’ cricket: students were placed in batting
and fielding teams and asked to apply the skills they
had learnt during the clinic in a game format. There
were plenty of big hits and fantastic fielding all
around.
We would like to thank Daniel Hutton from Cricket
Victoria, Andrew and Seamus for their help and
advice and Paul Allen from Nunawading Cricket
Club for the time they took to give us such an
exciting and fun-filled clinic and a big
“congratulation” to the students who participated in
the clinic. A special mention to Robert Nash for
coordinating the clinic with Cricket Victoria and
taking the time to ensure the sessions ran smoothly.
Now bring on the Cricket Season!
