The wonderful variety of size, shape, color, and flower means everyone will find them fascinating and rewarding to grow. If you are time-stressed, are fre- quently away from home, or have limited mobility, succulents enable you to gar- den on your own terms. Striking to look at, cacti and other succulents make a bold statement in any home or garden. Cacti Basics: A Comprehensive Guide to Cultivation and Care (Hamilyn, 2006) has tips and techniques on treat- ing pests, diseases, equipment, and propagation. The emphasis is on grow- ing both cacti and succulents indoors. A directory of the most widely grown spe- cies is included. Since many plants are easy to care for and have a forgiving nature, this book will assist even the most nervous newcomer in growing cacti with confidence. Complete Guide to Growing Cacti and Succulents (Lorenz, 2006) explains the plant botany along with de- sign ideas. The photographic plant direc- tory provides details for over 400 varie- ties. Full information on growth, spread, size, and flowering are included for each. Especially helpful are the best ways to combine shape, color and size of various plants. This comprehensive guide pro- vides identification, care, and cultivation of cacti and succulents. Various gardeners from across the country discuss how easy it is to cul- tivate these plants in Crazy About Cacti and Succulents (Brooklyn Botanic Gar- den, 2006).The chapters, including me- dicinal plants and succulent bonsai, are articles written by various master gar- deners and horticulturists. Tulsa Council of Federated Garden Clubs Meeting will be on October 3rd. Hospitality at 9:30am, Meeting will start at 10:00am. Program will be a discussion on why attendees joined a garden club and what they have received ort expect to receive from joining.

African Violet Society of Greater Tulsa The October meeting will be held on Monday, October 20th.The program will be presented by Dr. Bill Price from Vancouver, British Co-lumbia, Canada speaking on growing African violet trailers. Refreshments are available at 7:00pm, followed by the busi-ness meeting and program. Admission to all African Violet Society meetings is free and the public is encouraged to attend. The Hosta Connection The Hosta Connection will meet on October 28th at 7:00pm. Master Gardener Dana Dobias will present a program on fall/winter gar-den cleanup. The Tulsa Herb Society The Tulsa Herb Society will hold its Harvest Luncheon on Tues-day, October 14th, at 10:00pm. Members always look forward to these get-togethers, hostess table decorations and wonderful food. This is a “members only” event. Admission to all Tulsa Herb Society meetings is free and the public is encouraged to attend, except when noted as a closed meeting. The meeting will be held at Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Tulsa Area Iris Society TAIS will meet on October 9th in the auditorium of Tulsa Garden Center. The program will be presented at 7:00pm with the business meet-ing following. The Oklahoma Native Plant Society With fall soon to be in full swing, the Oklahoma Native Plant Society is looking forward to several events in which members will be involved. The Society will hold its Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 11th, at Chandler Park's Community Center in west Tulsa. Plans for the day include field trips, lectures, election of 2014-2015 state officers and other items of business pertaining to the Society, and presentation of awards. ONPS members from across the state are expected. The day-

long event will culminate with the annual fall executive board meeting which will be held at the home of Constance Murray, Chairman of North-east Chapter in Tulsa. ONPS will assume responsibility for the October Brown Bag Lecture at the Garden Center which will occur on October 16th. Presenter will be Sue Amstutz, member of Northeast Chapter and the Society's Liaison to the Garden Center. Mrs. Amstutz's topic will be "First Steps to Identification of Native Plants in the Wild." The presentation will feature a PowerPoint slide show with illustrations geared to demonstrate basic wildflower identification techniques. A November 1st field trip to Redbud Valley is scheduled for Northeast Chapter members, with plans for the outing being formulated by Mike Nelson, NE Chapter field trips coordinator. The Tulsa Garden Club The Tulsa Garden Club will have its first meeting of the year on Monday, October 6th at 10:30am. The program will be presented by Toni Garner of Toni’s Flowers presenting Wedding Ideas for Today’s Bride. There will be a salad luncheon following the meeting and guests are always welcome to attend. Come join Tulsa Garden Club as it starts its new and exciting year of Growing, Showing and Sharing Na-ture’s Beauty.

The Tulsa Perennial Club Tulsa Perennial Club meeting, October 16, 2014, 7:00pm.The topic for the October meeting is “All about Wildflowers”. There will be a discussion about wildflowers that occur naturally in Oklahoma, and attendees will learn about crafting with dried wildflow-ers. Join the Perennial Club members for an evening of fun with fellow gardeners as they explore the uncultivated side of plants.

The Tulsa Rose Society The Tulsa Rose Society will meet on Sunday, October 12th, at 2:00pm in the ballroom of Tulsa Garden Center. Dr. Todd Lasseigne, President and CEO of Tulsa Botanic Garden, will present a program on the progress of Tulsa Botanic Garden. Attendees are invited to come dressed in a costume suggesting your favorite named rose variety. This may be a headpiece, clothing item, make-up or a full costume. Some popular names are Mr. Lincoln, Dolly Parton, St. Patrick, Aloha and Marilyn Monroe. A $25 gift certificate will be awarded to Best Rose Representation. Admission to all Tulsa Rose Society meetings is free and the public is encouraged to attend. The meeting will be held at Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Peoria Ave., Tulsa, Ok 74114.

Tulsa Herb Society It’s time to dress your table for the holidays. Join the Tulsa Herb Society from 11:00am to 12:30pm, Tuesday, November 11th for the an-nual “Holiday Tablescapes”. Attendees will see a variety of decorated tables and also how to decorate your table for the season by using what nature has given you.
