Flint Ridge Business Park has a new tenant. The Economic Development division’s board of directors authorized the sale of Shell Building #4 to Commercial Plaza, Inc. which will lease the facility to Industrial Service Corporation (ISC). The company provides a variety of services to area companies, and the immediate need was for additional warehouse space. It is likely that the facility will have a variety of uses over time. The shell building was completed in 2004 to reduce the construction timeline on fast-moving projects.

“We are pleased that this transaction has been completed,” said Rob Harrington, Director of Economic Development. “It is encouraging to see locally held companies reinvest in the community.”

DPI Sells Portion of Bookend BuildingsDowntown Partners has sold two of its three properties in the 500 block of Jefferson Street, commonly called the Bookend Buildings, for restoration and redevelopment.

“This is a significant step toward enhancing the appearance and economy of downtown Burlington,” said Steve Frevert, Executive Director of Downtown Partners. “For years the Bookend Buildings were emblematic of downtown disinvestment. Now they will become part of its accelerating revitalization.”

The buildings were purchased by Downtown Partners last year with proceeds from the Partnering for the Future investment campaign. The organization had identified the bookend buildings as a top redevelopment priority due to their architectural significance and prominent location.

The east and central buildings in the block have been purchased by local residents who are planning first floor commercial development for the initial phase of the project. They have right of first refusal on 522 Jefferson, the corner building at Sixth and Jefferson, which is still being offered for sale by Downtown Partners. It is eligible for historic rehab tax credits and façade restoration grants. For information, contact Steve Frevert at [email protected] or 319-208-0056.

Universal Therapy Group reigned as the champion at the 13th Annual Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic and Fundraiser held on Thursday, August 23.

“The championship brought an end to a fun-filled day of socialization by Chamber of Commerce members and guests,” said Kay Sackville Breuer, Vice President.

The Chamber of Commerce also thanks the many sponsors who made this event possible. Their continued support helps offset major increases in annual membership dues.

It is the last chance to sign up for the Manufacturers Appreciation Luncheon to be held on Friday, October 5, with exhibits opening at 11:20 am at the PZAZZ! Convention & Event Center. Opening remarks start the luncheon at 11:40 pm.

Guest Speaker Mike Fazio, Vice President of Career TEAM Consulting, has enjoyed a 20 year career focused on sales management, marketing, training and recruiting, with a definitive belief that consistent, enthusiastic coaching and leadership development provides individuals and organizations with the tools needed to reach higher levels of performance. He has historically implemented successful strategies in both his corporate and government experiences and is driven by a passion for helping, sharing and teaching others. Mike believes that “selling” is the fundamental root behind all successful people and organizations. He stresses that while not everyone shares the word “sales” in a title, it can be defined as “The applied science and art of giving people what they need to know, in a way they want to hear it.”

To RSVP, contact Belinda Colwell, Administrative Assistant by October 2 at [email protected] or 319-208-0042.

Prospect Activity in the Greater Burlington area has been very positive in the past several months and continues to grow as the year comes to an end. “With the announcement of the large fertilizer project just south of Burlington, an update to the membership on our activity here in the Greater Burlington area is in order,” said Rob Harrington, Director of Economic Development.

In the past several months information has been sent to more than 12 possible projects ranging from retail establishments to large industrial companies. The activity in the past few months shows that the Burlington area has tremendous opportunity for growth in the upcoming months and years. In the next few months Rob will be traveling across the United States working on these projects and many more. The potential growth that will come from these companies is something to look forward to.

For more information, contact Rob Harrington at 319-208-0053.

Prospect Activity Grows

This month marks my first as your new President and CEO. Since the announcement last fall, I have had multiple opportunities to visit with board members, stakeholders and reporters about the future of the Greater Burlington area and our organization’s role in moving it forward. During the conversations, I am often asked about my specific plans for the Partnership.

There are certainly a number of initiatives that have my attention, from bold advocacy on behalf of business to planning for the next generation industrial park. It is important to note, however, that this organization is not about me or my personal vision for the future. I am mindful that the Partnership has garnered its credibility, not overnight, but only after years of hard work and successful outcomes. The successes of the past would not be possible without the financial support of our members and investors as well as the time and expertise derived from the many volunteers and board members. Strong organizations, such as this one, outlast their individual leaders.

I am humbled at the opportunity to lead this great organization and the dependable team members that put concepts into action every day. There is significant economic momentum within this community, and there

are opportunities before us that have not existed for some time. Over the last four decades, Southeast Iowa’s history has been marred by population declines and job losses. Our future, however, can look very different as new jobs will bring more families and new opportunities to this corner of the state. The Orascom project alone presents us with a chance to attract new residents and new businesses to Greater Burlington.

Fortunately, our community is positioned well to take advantage of these new opportunities. Due to the efforts of many, we have invested in first-rate amenities, improved attractions, and solidified our footing as the region’s hub for health care, shopping, dining, entertainment, culture, commerce and more.

As a community, we are not without challenges. However, through the efforts of the Partnering for the Future campaign, the Imagine steering committee, and the City of Burlington’s revamped comprehensive plan, my sense is that we will charge forward regardless of the obstacles.

Dennis Hinkle was not afraid to take risks and promote those big ideas that had the most potential to succeed. My hope is that one day my successor will say the same about me. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Jason Hutcheson, President & CEO Greater Burlington Partnership

Thielen Funeral Home Thielen Funeral home is locally owned and operated by Adam & Theresa Thielen. Thielen Funeral Home offers all of the space and amenities you and your family require at your time of need. After listening to those we serve, we allowed for a parking lot large enough to accommodate those in attendance, a community room for luncheons, a chapel large enough to comfortably seat 400 people if needed and all the little details that make your funeral home comfortable and accessible. It is the area’s only funeral home built from the ground up as a funeral home.

Thielen Funeral Home has once again returned your trust by opening the first on-site crematory in the area operated by fully licensed Funeral Directors. The trust you place in us is sacred and we do everything possible to maintain complete control of the cremation service and process. The facility, located on the premises, allows us to do exactly that.

We pride ourselves in providing the best services in our community. Thielen Crematory is just one more way to show our commitment to our community.

Market Your Business and Go for the Gold!

The Partnership’s second annual Total Resource Campaign is under way. Volunteers are working with area businesses to determine which advertising opportunities they would like to be a part of. The Greater Burlington Partnership offers a number of networking events, community events and marketing opportunities throughout the remainder of 2012 and into 2013.

The Total Resource Campaign is a six-week revenue generating effort that kicked off in late September. The campaign will run through October 31, when a victory party will be held for volunteers.

“The campaign offers many benefits not only to the members and the Partnership, but also to the volunteers,” said Kay Sackville Breuer, Vice President. “The volunteers are constantly meeting new people and expanding their network. They will build relationships that will benefit them both professionally and personally.” In addition, the campaign offers members the opportunity to see what marketing and advertising options are available. A business has the option of looking at a menu of sponsorships or advertising and selecting what best fits their marketing plan.

If you haven’t been contacted and are interested in being involved or viewing the menu of sponsorships or advertising, you can look for the “Go for the Gold” button at the bottom of www.greaterburlington.com or call 319-208-0041.

OFFICERSChamber Board of Directors

VISIoN – A growing regional center of commerce, industry, education, health care, entertainment and culture which provides a great place to live and work.

MISSIoN – The Chamber of Commerce is a business association that exists to serve as a catalyst for economic growth and community development in Greater Burlington, Iowa.

The Hawk Eye is celebrating its 175th anniversary of continuous operations as a newspaper publisher in 2012. This is a remarkable achievement for any business, but perhaps even more so for a newspaper, given all the changes that have occurred in technology and competition over that one and three quarter centuries. The Hawk Eye also has a very long record of Chamber of Commerce membership and participation in Greater Burlington Partnership boards, committees and events. The Greater Burlington Partnership wants to extend our congratulations to The Hawk Eye for this outstanding milestone.

The longevity of The Hawk Eye has drawn attention of the need to recognize members for their length of time in business and their commitment to the Chamber of Commerce by years of membership. The staff of the Partnership will need your cooperation and assistance in gathering some of this information. We do not have the start of business date for most of our members, and we do not have membership start dates for some members. There was a loss of data somewhere many years ago, and many members have a start date of 1980 due to that issue.

We will be asking you to assist us in adding to our database critical information so that we can recognize our members longevity going forward. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Contact the Greater Burlington Partnership at [email protected] 319-752-6365 or with your information.

Young Professionals Membership Drive176... is the number of members in Greater Burlington Young Professionals (YP) who are active in the community, their workplace and their home. Many Young Professionals are balancing busy and budding careers, children, school activities and community involvement every day.

YP was formed in 2005 and is a committee of the Chamber of Commerce, a division of the Greater Burlington Partnership. YP offers members opportunities to network and learn about professional development through their Lunch and Learn series. They have also promoted a number of service projects for members to get involved with including the Aldo Leopold After School Program and Relay for Life. Annually, YP members are asked to participate in a food drive to benefit a local food pantry. In addition to these projects, Greater Burlington YP sells fun spirited Burlington theme t-shirts and uses the profits for a scholarship to Southeastern Community College.

YP is open to those ages 21 - 42 who want to get involved and enhance their network. Annual membership is $55.

For more information or to join, contact Kay Sackville Breuer, Vice President, at [email protected] or 319-208-0041.
