Soaring to New Heights in the Lower School Science Lab!

The Lower School science program is soaring to new heights with a hot air balloon theme. There are the obvious changes when entering the newly remodeled science lab. Its size is 50% larger, there are new tables, cabinets and new furry friends. The enhanced facility is home to an expanded curriculum, with each class now performing labs and many projects coordinated to include research and technology as well.

Science is moving beyond the lab and is now a regular part of morning announcements including eco facts and prizes each week. Students learned in September that Americans use 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour and yet only one in four bottles are recycled. Students aim to change that by focusing on reducing plastic use & reusing containers, making recycling the last choice.

Each month, a science theme will showcase the many areas in which science is a part of our daily lives. October kicks off with the Eco-Team which is developing more ways to keep our campus “green.” These Eco Super Heroes will be coming around to help everyone learn how to be more eco-conscious in school and at home. More information will follow with news on events that will include a Critter Club, a visit with Alligator Bob from Animal Planet, Science Night and, of course, a more inclusive Science Fair and Earth Day.

If you’re an animal lover, think recycling is cool, have mad science skills, a green thumb, or just happen to have a love of science, please consider becoming a Parent Volunteer in the new “ Soaring Science” program. If interested, please contact [email protected]

Welcome Back Lower School —Linda Bamford, PrincipalDespite the unfortunate visit from Isaac, the start of school was exceptionally smooth. The students transitioned easily from summer vacation to serious academics. They were more than ready for a daily routine and the excitement of learning. Thanks to our fabulous teachers, every child has adjusted, and is smiling and comfortable. Laughter is again echoing throughout the Lower School, and I’ve never received more hugs than in these past few weeks.

Watching the new building transform daily is so exciting. Students can’t wait to walk through the doors for the first time and experience all that this new facility has to offer. We are hoping for a May occupancy date. Lower School students were also very impressed with the renovation of their Science Lab. We encourage parents to stop by to see our newest pride and joy.

The growth of the campus through all of the building projects and their state-of-the-art resources is not the only focus of improvement. Administration and teachers on both campuses are working together diligently on curriculum. There is a core team investigating all the digitalized books and apps available for iPad implementation. Students will once again have many lessons taught through this new vehicle of learning. Technology in our labs, media center and production studio is constantly evolving and all of us are evolving along with it. The addition of Drama to the lower grades was met with much enthusiasm. Students love their new Drama teacher. Before long, we will be sending our budding stars to the Upper School to experience further opportunities in this area.

On behalf of the Lower School, we welcome everyone back for an exciting and promising new school year!

Construction continues on the new Lower/Middle School building on the site of the old cafeteria. Kenny and Dennis of Herman Construction make sure it is on schedule.

Students enjoy experiments in the enlarged Lower School science lab. In the photo, students explore mealy worms.

Debate Kicks Off Another Big YearLast year, the Heritage debate team won trophies and awards at the University of Florida, Emory, Wake Forest, Harvard, Philadelphia, New York, North Carolina, State Championships, and even Debate Nationals. Heritage debaters competed at over 40 tournaments last year, with five students making it to State Championships and six students to Debate Nationals. Students who made it to Nationals last year are Alyssa Turk, Eric Momper, Felix Hartmann, Willy Vazquez, Travis Noddings, and Ariana Bagherian.

Several students contributed to the big moments the debate team had over the past year. Jeson Wang, Giovanni Campanale, Sami Ferazi, Willy Vazquez, and Travis Noddings all advanced into elimination rounds at State Championships, making American Heritage one of the only schools in the state to have every competitor advance. Willy Vazquez became the first Heritage debater to make it to debate nationals seven times, and he made it all the way to the final round of debate nationals twice. Eric Momper and Alyssa Turk became Heritage’s first public forum team to advance into elimination rounds at debate nationals. The school’s top point earners were Jeson Wang and Michael Wu, who attended more tournaments than any other debaters.

After a big year of debate, several students also devoted their summers to becoming better debaters. Alyssa Turk and Michael Wu worked with some of the best coaches in the nation at Harvard University’s Public Forum Debate Institute. And newcomer Caroline Rapp went to the Florida Forensic Institute in Fort Lauderdale.

This year’s debate season is just beginning. The team competes locally in Palm Beach County, throughout Florida, and out of state, with students competing in partner public forum debate, philosophical debate, congressional debate, extemporaneous speaking, and other types of debate. At one of the first tournaments, veteran debaters Michael Wu and Alyssa Turk already were invited to compete in their first round-robin of the year. Round robins are the most exclusive of tournaments, where a host school selects students from a large pool of applicants, and invites only the most highly qualified debaters. Alyssa and Michael were among eight public forum teams invited to compete there. They debated whether or not the Congress should renew the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, and in one of their rounds, Michael and Alyssa beat a former national champion! Judges have liked their complementary style, as Alyssa takes a more passionate argumentative stance, while Michael takes a cool and collected logical stance in their rounds.

As the debaters kick off their debate year with tournaments at Wake Forest University, Yale, and local schools here in Florida, we want them to know that we are so proud of them and wish them another great year!

For more information about the Heritage debate program, visit the website at www.freewebs.com/americanheritatedebate, or email coach David Childree at [email protected]. Students who want to get involved are also welcome to join us for debate practices Wednesdays at 4 p.m. in the courtroom or library lab.

Life in the Middle... —Lisa LeFevre, Principal

We welcome all the sixth graders and new seventh and eighth graders into our Middle School family. In addition, we welcome three new teachers this year, Mrs. Cantin, Mrs. Forero and Ms. Murphy.

Our students are jumping right in and getting involved. Builders’ Club and National Junior Honor Society are having joint meetings during lunch on Fridays. Student Government will be holding elections this month so they can get busy planning Homecoming events. Many middle school students are playing fall sports including: Football, Volleyball, Golf, Tennis, Cheerleading and Cross-Country. Our students are also being introduced to Junior Thespians, the Robotics Club and the Pre- Law and Pre-Med Societies.

The Guidance Department spoke at a recent morning meeting about the importance of developing good study skills. They also discussed the essential skill of time management. With six academic classes and all the extracurricular choices available, managing time properly is critical to success in Middle School.

Watch this space next month for news about our Middle School trips, Speech Contest, History Day projects, and more.

Pre-Law Program Welcomes Mrs. Kelly Harris

The Pre-Law program at American Heritage School welcomes Mrs. Kelly Harris, a graduate of Georgetown University Law School and a University of Florida, undergraduate. Mrs. Harris is entering the program with experience in corporate law, as well as complex litigation. She will contribute her experience to several pre-law courses, as well as the continued success of our Pre-Law Society. We are looking forward to her first year at American Heritage School.

Additionally, the Mock Trial Team, a key component of the program, is preparing to compete in The Providence Foundation National Mock Trial Competition in Denver, Colorado. Students will take on roles as attorneys and witnesses in a series of criminal trials. This year’s competition is based on the historic, unsolved highjacking case of D.B. Cooper. This competition will be the kickoff event of the mock trial season.

The Pre-Law Society is commencing the fall fundraiser which will benefit the Children’s Emergency Fund of the Palm Beach County Legal Aid Society. Furthermore, a list of speakers has been arranged to present riveting speeches involving the legal system and career development in the field of law. If anyone is interested in participating in the Pre-Law Society or volunteering in the fall fundraiser, please contact Mrs. Ani Majuni Porter, Esq. at [email protected]

Message from the PTO...

The 2012-2013 school year has started off well for your

PTO. We welcomed new parents on the first day of school

with a New Parent Breakfast. It was wonderful to host our

new families and welcome them into our special American

Heritage Family. Our first PTO meeting and Welcome

Back Coffee was held on September 5th in the Dining

Hall. The meeting had a huge turnout with familiar faces,

as well as quite a few new faces. While we love to see our

old friends, it is so exciting to welcome our new friends to

the PTO.

The Annual PTO Fundraiser was a big success. We thank

all of you who took the time to sell wrapping paper,

magazines, and cookie dough. Your continued support is

always appreciated.

October is a busy month around American Heritage. The

PTO will be running the Lower School Scholastic Book

Fair from October 15th - 19th. Funds raised go back

to the library in order to buy additional books for our

children. Halloween and Homecoming will round out the

month with SGA’s sponsored Trunk or Treat on October

26th and the Stallion’s Homecoming Game on November

2nd. Our next PTO meeting is Wednesday, October 3rd

at 2:00 p.m. in the Dining Hall. We really hope you can

attend!

PK4 students are having an exciting start to their American Heritage school year! They have been learning, playing and making new friends! Students are enjoying the iPads in the classroom, playing games, learning sounds and letters, and recognizing numbers! The children had a fun week learning about apples! How they grow, tasting apples and painting with apples! PK4 is already so much fun, and it’s only just begun!

Welcome back to school! Students are learning and having fun in first grade. They are getting accustomed to their new routine, and love having their very own desks and have now graduated to being able to play on the “big playground!”

The class investigated living and nonliving things in science, discovering that a rock and oatmeal are not alive, but a mealworm is definitely alive! It was exciting observing the mealworm wriggling to the oatmeal for a meal! See photo p. 2.Students are reviewing patterning skills in math, and they are becoming strong spellers. Students were surprised when they found out that there are SEVEN in their class who are left- handed! Isn’t that interesting?

Second graders are off to a great start! In science, they are learning about living and nonliving things and their needs. In social studies, they are learning about where they live. Students are comparing different communities and how people work together. Students are all looking forward to a wonderful year— making new friends and adjusting well to their new schedules.

Third grade is soaring into a fabulous new year. Students have been learning about themselves and each other. Their creativity can be seen in their descriptive writing and amazing self-portraits. In social studies students are comparing their communities with communities in different parts of the country.

It was wonderful meeting all of the third grade families at Curriculum Night. Third graders are looking forward to their journey into their family histories over the next few months.

Fourth grade is diving right into an exciting year of fun-filled adventures. Exploring the regions of the U.S. with emphasis on the history of Florida, classifying rocks, creative writing, AR reading as well as a variety of genres in literature, are just a few areas they will be visiting. Field trips to museums, theatres and Florida historical sights are being arranged to enhance the curriculum. A K.I.C. (Knowledge, Integrity, Compassion) award will be given to a deserving student from each fourth grade class each month. Finally, they will be proud of themselves for participating in Student Government and fundraising for worthy causes this year. Fourth grade ROCKS!

The fifth grade is off to a fantastic start. Students have been using the iPads to supplement all subject areas. In science, they were able to see the insides of plant and animal cells through the use of science apps. In social studies, the colony of Jamestown was brought to life through other applications. Other activities the students are participating in are student government, education rocks, and safety patrol! It has been an exciting and busy beginning of the year.

Our youngest Stallions (PK3) using the iPads

Safety Patrol members Lauren Mundt and Lily Schleifer guide a preschool student to class.

Olivia Joffe of Mrs. Browns 3rd grade paints a beautiful impressionist picture of a tree and a meadow!

Lower School ArtWelcome back lower school artists! PK 3 and 4 started out the year with beautiful dot paintings on a fish that are now hanging up in their classrooms. They are very jolly and students had so much fun doing them. Kindergarten, after a brief review of basic knowledge used torn paper to create a bright, colorful fall tree. They are great! First graders used paint for their fall tree and added a fence, grass and lively birds to their picture. Second graders used their fingers to create the leaves on their brilliant trees. Third graders had a lesson on the impressionists and their style of work before they began an impressionist style painting of their own based on the painting “ The Mulberry Tree” by Vincent Van Gogh. They are spectacular! The fourth grade wheel started by learning about geometric, diagonal and organic style designs before beginning a printmaking project based on the work of Andy Warhol. Fifth graders, after a review of basic knowledge, learned about radial design based on the barn art of the Penn. Dutch. They learned how to use a compass and a ruler! They are really beautiful!

29th Year of Camp—a Spectacular Success!

Summer camp is one of the best things about being a kid, and this summer an unprecedented number of children each week spent their days at American Heritage Summer Camp making wonderful and lasting memories sure to last a lifetime. Smiles were seen all over campus this summer as campers ages 3-14 filled the “lazy” days of summer on our 40 acre campus. Camp consists of a multitude of indoor and outdoor sports, swimming and cooling off in our two beautiful pools, practicing yoga, arts and crafts, nature and science, cooking classes, computer time, creative dramatics, global expeditions, Gary Goodman’s Magic and so much more!

It takes a long time to plan a summer filled with nonstop fun and excitement, and we are already busy preparing for next summer. Early enrollment (with a 10% discount) for the 2013 camp season, OUR 30TH YEAR, will take place in November. Look for registration information in the next Stallion. If you would like any information about our camp programs, you may contact Sally Schleifer and Gail Schneider in the camp office, at 561-637-2440, or send an email to [email protected].
