Congrats to the Blue Team (Kyle Warren, Charles Blase, Michael Desciscoilo, and Joe Caito) who took home the grand prize for the upper-classmen division (Target gift cards), and to the Red Team (Scott Beaudoin, Courtney Burke, Tommy Burkhard, and Alexis Rinker) who took home first place for the freshman division (gift cards to Ralphs). Thank you to all teams and sponsoring departments/offices who participated! We had a blast organizing this and hope to continue this next year!

INTRAMURAL UPDATE

Welcome back to another fun and exciting year of USD Intramural Sports. Leagues have kicked off and are in full swing.

Dodgeball started league play in a roar as many of the games saw close matches and leading to “Duals”. Pictured right is the start of a dual to declare the winner of one of the games; “Trap House” vs “San Juan Warriors”. All of their matches were extremely close and a winner could not be decided with the series being split 5 to 5. We picture a rematch in the playoffs for these two teams.

!

Defending champions “Notorious DIG” in the Co-Rec Volleyball league continue their dominance. They have yet to lose a match this season and don’t seem to be slowing down. “Unprotected Sets” are right on their heels though. Pictured left is “Unprotected Sets” going for a power spike against “Sloth’n”. This match came down to a third game with “Unprotected Sets” pulling off the best of three.

GRAD/LAW INTRAMURAL SOFTBALLThe Grad/Law softball league is 4 weeks into the regular season. This season we have 24 teams comprising of law students, graduate students, and even a faculty team. The new softball participants are quickly learning how serious we here at USD take our intramural softball and the returning teams are vying for a favorable seed for the 16 team playoff that will be taking place in November. Softball on Thursday nights has been a great way for our graduate and law students to unwind a little bit from the riggers of school and to let loose a little bit. Feel free to come down to Manchester Field on Thursday nights from 7:00 p.m till 11:00 p.m. to check out the action! If you are interested in putting a team together for next semester, please contact Derek at [email protected].

THE TRAINER’S CORNERBREAKFAST: THE MEAL OF CHAMPIONS

No  time  for  breakfast  in  the  morning?  You  may  want  to  reprioritize  your  schedule.

The  word  breakfast  breaks  down  to  “break”  “fast”.    When  you  sleep  at  night,  you  put  your  body  into  a  fasting  mode,  which  tells  your  body  to  hold  onto  everything  you  have  because  you  are  not  going  eat  for  a  while.  Consequently,  your  body  starts  to  store  what  you  have  previously  eaten.    Once  you  eat  again,  your  body  resumes  using  food  as  fuel  rather  storing  for  later.

The  following  is  an  excerpt  from  WebMD  about  breakfast  and  weight  gain.

“Break  the  Fast  to  Shed  the  Pounds

Some  people  skip  breakfast  in  an  effort  to  lose  weight,  but  the  practice  is  more  likely  to  cause  weight  gain  than  weight  loss.  Skipping  breakfast  is  strongly  linked  to  the  development  of  obesity.  Studies  show  that  overweight  and  obese  children,  adolescents,  and  adults  are  less  likely  to  break  the  fast  each  morning  than  their  thinner  counterparts.

According  to  research,  skipping  meals,  especially  breakfast,  can  actually  make  weight  control  more  difDicult.  Breakfast  skippers  tend  to  eat  more  food  than  usual  at  the  next  meal  or  nibble  on  high-‐calorie  snacks  to  stave  off  hunger.  Several  studies  suggest  that  people  tend  to  accumulate  more  body  fat  when  they  eat  fewer,  larger  meals  than  when  they  eat  the  same  number  of  calories  in  smaller,  more  frequent  meals.  To  teens,  especially  teenage  girls,  skipping  breakfast  may  seem  like  a  perfectly  logical  way  to  cut  down  on  calories  and  lose  weight.  [However]  it's  the  most  important  meal  of  the  day  because  of  the  role  it  plays  in  maintaining  good  health  and  preventing  obesity.”

When  you  kick-‐off  your  day  by  eating  breakfast  before  your  Kirst  class,  early  workout,  or  a  meeting,  you  will  Kind  you  are  more  alert  and  ready  to  embrace  the  day.    You  will  also  notice  your  energy  level  rise  and  you  will  be  able  to  sustain  what  you  are  engaged  in  longer.    There  are  many  different  breakfast  meal  options,  but  the  take-‐away  is  to  eat  and  fuel  your  body  to  promote  health  and  successful  weight  management.
