AS I WRITE THIS, I LOOK OUT THE WINDOW OF MY

OFFICE INTO THE COURTYARD AND SEE THE TEDDY

CLASS FROM THE ECC HAVING THEIR PE TIME. THE

JOY THAT THESE CHILDREN FIND IN THE SIMPLEST OF

THINGS BRINGS JOY TO ME AS WELL. !ey laugh as they throw balls across the yard and run after them. !ey wave scarves back

and forth and see how the wind catches them. Covering faces, and pulling the scarf away

to see everyone around them, brings laughter that carries through the air. Who can help

but smile as you watch, but also wonder what happened to the ability to "nd the joy in the

simple things? !is past Sunday I had the privilege to teach the “Introduction to the Bible” class with

15 third graders and their parents. !ese students were so excited to receive their new Bibles!

!ey quickly opened them and started to look to see what things they would "nd in this new

treasure. Do you remember when you received your "rst Bible and the excitement that went

with it? Maybe you still have that Bible. Is the excitement to open it still there?

In Matthew 18:3, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little

children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. !erefore, whoever humbles himself like

this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

In the rush of responsibilities as adults, in the concern to make ends meet, we often forget

to take a step back and look at life simply. We hurry by the world that God has created and fail

to see the beauty around us. And, we forget the joy of opening our Bibles and seeing what we will

"nd there. Even in the scripture that we have read over and over again, we will "nd new insights.

God speaks to us through His Word because it is a living Word.

!is month, I encourage you to ‘become like a child.’ Take some time to walk outside and look at

the world God has created with the eyes of a child. Show interest in the activities of the ants as they scurry

to prepare for winter. Listen to wind rustling through the trees and see the beauty of the colors of

fall. And, open your Bibles with excitement and anticipation of what God will say to you today.

I also ask you to pray with me – for this wonderful class of third graders – that the

excitement that they have in receiving their Bibles will continue, and that they will grow in

their knowledge of God’s love through them. May these gifts be a blessing to them and

their families for many years to come. Find joy in the world around, and grow as a child in your faith.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATIONOctober Cross View University Schedule;Kidstitute Shows Love to Love, INC

OCTOBER CROSS VIEW UNIVERSITYSunday Mornings:Now through October 21201: Concerning Spiritual Gifts Many Christians shy away from the topic of spiritual gifts be-cause of the supernatural qualities of some of the gifts listed in the New Testament. !is course takes seriously what the Bible says and focuses on helping the reader who is looking for their niche in the church. !is is a great study as we begin our yearlong focus to Serve the Lord with Joy! October 28 101: SOLA—A Reformation Day Study !e Lutheran Church, born out of the Reformation stands on three great “SOLAS.” • Sola Gratia—by Grace Alone • Sola Fide—by Faith Alone • Sola Scriptura—by Scripture Alon3Come and hear why today the SOLAs are as foundational to our Lutheran theology as they were in the days of the Reformation. Wednesday Nights:Now through October 3 301: Mark—Gospel of Passion (Part 1 of 3) Join Craig McCourt as he leads participants in a chapter by chapter journey through Mark’s Gospel. In this study, we will take a lively tour of the Gospel of Mark. As a friend and interpreter of Simon Peter, Mark gives "rsthand glimpses of the life and ministry of Jesus in vibrant and energetic narration. !e "rst Gospel to be written, Mark is a “pamphlet for hard times,” encouraging Chris-tians that all their su#erings were already endured by Jesus. !is study will be taught in 3 parts; part 2 begins November 7.

October 10 through October 31 201: Death… !en What? (DVD based study) !at we all die is pretty much agreed upon, it’s what takes place two seconds later that makes us wonder. Explore this lively

and completely relevant topic in Death ... !en What? Softening death with euphemisms or denying its approach with cosmetic surgery doesn’t change the fact it’s there — waiting for us all. Eating healthy, avoiding vices and exercising regularly are all touted as ways to get more mileage from our bodies. And while these practices may increase physical performance, they will not put the skids on our demise. Looking beyond our mortal lives here, man has formulated complex religions, philosophies and ide-ologies to attempt a glimpse behind the "nal curtain dropping on each of us when we close our eyes in this world for the last time. Innovative as these systems of thought may be, they o#er no solace against the perfect judgment of an omniscient and righteous God. !at relief is available only through Jesus’ redemptive work on the cross. In Him all the speculations of religious thought and ba$ing intricacies of philosophical inquiry come crumbling down. As God’s creatures -- as sinners -- the end of our days is entirely in His hands. In this fact neither our clever wordplay nor our co-medic explanations will do us any good, but only faith in Jesus Christ and Him cruci"ed. Kidstitute Kicko" Starts Strong Kidstitute had a record turnout for our "rst night back after summer break! !e kids enjoyed seeing each other again and meeting some new faces. We had a special treat and played some

games to get to know each other. We also had our "rst servant event where we all brought in personal hygiene products and put them into baggies for those in need. !ey were brought to Love, INC. (Love In the Name of Christ) of Eastern Carver County. !ey will be placed in backpacks for adults and children who are homeless. We packed 29 baggies with several items and had 20 bars of soap left over to donate as well. !ank you for a great success!

CROSSWAYS INTERNATIONAL CALLINGCI Conducts Seminar for Worldwide Church Workersby Harry Wendt, Crossways International President

September 10-14, Crossways Interna-tional (CI) conducted a special seminar for church workers near and far. Among those present were four church leaders from In-dia, and the Principal of Carlile College and Seminary, Nairobi, Kenya. CI’s sta! wish to say a sincere “thank you” to those members of Cross View who hosted a special meal and meeting on the "ursday evening at which those #ve international guests were invited to share information about their ministries. "ose who attended from India have links to "e Association for "eological Education by Extension (TAFTEE), based in Bangalore, India. TAFTEE is the world’s largest "eological Education by Extension organization. It has translated See !rough the Scriptures (STS) into seven languages, and is now launching the use of Crossways. It also plans to translate some of CI’s short courses. TAFTEE has workers in India, Bangladesh,

Malaysia, Singapore, United Arab Emir-ates, Kuwait, and Nepal. Its courses are also used by partner organizations in Pakistan, Lebanon, Southern Sudan, Iraq, Egypt, and Syria. TAFTEE now plans to upgrade all seven STS translations from 2nd to 3rd editions, and print the illustrations in full color. It will cost about $2,000 for each upgrade. Carlile Seminary has 200 students enrolled in its three-year theological training program. During their course of studies, these students are required to study See !rough the Scriptures, !e Divine Drama, and Crossways. "ey come from the follow-ing nations: Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Demo-cratic Republic of Congo, Southern Sudan, and Ethiopia. "e seminary president, Dr. Peter Nyende, is now working toward reach-ing out to people in more African countries.

‘Procession’ Purchase Celebrates Art Fest’s

30th Anniversary In celebration of Cross View’s 30th Anniversary Christian Arts Festival, a pur-chase has been made of “"e Procession”, a serigraph print by John August Swanson. "is purchase was made with memorial gift funds, with special mention given to the memory of Steve Gratz. Works by Swanson were featured in the 2012 festival. Many of these larger works are represented as smaller images within this rich mosaic of Christian imagery. It is an exceptional collage of the journey humanity has taken over the course of years. About this work, Swanson says, “"ere are sacred places throughout the world that have special meaning in the lives of people who journey to get there. "ey experi-ence a centering, a healing, and a safe place to remember and to hope. "e journey or procession takes us out of our ordinary lives to experience a transcendental or universal connection. "e outward walk re$ects an inner journey. In this art, images encircle the people, giving us a connection, setting us apart from extraneous happenings and distractions that surround our lives, so to help us engage in contemplation and calm re$ection on our complex lives. “Processions also move us toward a trans-formation of more than just our individual hearts. We, in our communities of faith, are a procession of stories, both unique and shared, yet connected to those who have gone before us and those who will come after us. It is not my desire that the complexity and intricacy of this work confuse or confound, but that they illuminate and inspire. "e great pro-cession is a celebration of life and faith where the rich and poor march in unison; the strong carry the weak, and the weak humble the proud; those who know the dance teach those who are just learning; and a child lifts high the banner for all to follow in joy, in peace, in love.” -John August Swanson, September 2007

Serve the Lord with GladnessConsider How You Can Serve

!e theme for the 2012-2013 year of ministry at Cross View is “Serve the Lord with Gladness.” In Psalm 100:2, the word for “serve” in the Hebrew text can also mean “worship.” In general, the term means to “expend considerable energy and intensity in a task or function.” Our “work,” our “ser-vice,” our “worship” of the Lord isn’t just to be carried out. It is to done with a spirit of gladness! Every expenditure of energy and every task or function carried out with intensity in the Lord’s kingdom is to be performed with joyful heart. Such cheerful service happens in the church, in the home, at the job, or wherever we #nd ourselves. All of life becomes an opportunity to serve the Lord with gladness. !is fall we celebrate and give special focus to the many ways that we as individu-als and as a congregation can serve the Lord with gladness. God has uniquely gifted and entrusted each of us with time, talent, and resources to be used in service to Him and for work in His kingdom. He makes us managers of that which He entrusts and expects us to put it to good use. He wants us to follow suit with the faithful servants in the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14-30. Serving the Lord with gladness is not a part of life; it is a way of life! !e fruit of Christian management is to evidence itself in all of life. Every expenditure of time, talent and resource is to be to God’s glory. One part of that overall service happens

as Christians join together in mission and ministry. It happens as we partner the time, talent, and resources entrusted to us to carry out Christ’s Great Commission. !is year, as a part of our fall emphasis, we will have multiple ways to serve the Lord with gladness at Cross View. A mailing will be sent out around October 12. It will encourage you to consider how you can serve the Lord with gladness in the coming year by empowering the mission and ministry of Cross View through donations of time, talent, and #nancial resources that God has entrusted to you. !e mailing will include a cover letter, a brochure outlining the various opportunities before us, a Time and Talent Celebration Pledge, and a #nancial commitment card. Please take time to carefully and prayerfully read through these materials. On October 21 we will, with glad-ness, celebrate the outpouring of God’s gifts among us with a special Commitment Sunday worship service. Please pray for the mission and ministry of Cross View in the coming weeks as we look to the year ahead. Consider all that God has entrusted to you, and how you and your family can serve the Lord with gladness—both through your partnership with Cross View and through intentional Christian management in all of life. Let’s challenge one another in the year ahead to be faithful and cheerful managers of all that God entrusts.
