The Pastor’s Letter

PAG E 2

How to Survive a Hurricane and Personal Storms In June I received the latest Christianity Today magazine and read an article by Jamie Aten entitled “A Walking Disaster: How a Hurricane Helped Me Weather My Battle with Can-cer.” Little did I know at the time that I would soon face a hurricane and my own personal health crisis. The principles Dr. Aten shared from his hurricane research and personal ill-ness helped me face my struggles with courage and confi-dence. Jamie Aten and his family moved to Mississippi six days be-fore Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. They evacuated before the storm but Jamie soon began to help with the relief efforts. The experience led him to study the role of faith and the church in disaster relief. He became Director of the Hu-manitarian Disaster Institute at Wheaton College. He soon faced a personal storm in his life, stage 4 colon cancer. His study of hurricane response helped him respond to his cancer with faith and resolve. We have faced Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose and Maria in recent days. Some have been more impacted than others but all of us have had our lives disrupted in some ways. All of us at times face personal storms that challenge us. Professor Aten’s faith principles of surviving disasters can help us over-come life’s storms. Let me share his insights. SEARCH

All of us will face trouble in life. Research has shown that the search for meaning in the midst of the storm helps with recov-ery and stress. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging (Psalm 46:1-3). The Psalmist describes a complete upheaval of nature with earthquakes, landslides and roaring seas. He has confidence during the storm because he finds his refuge in God. When I experienced a heart attack on August 19, I had no idea what was happening. The quick ac-tions of my wife and hospital staff made sure I was stabilized and received the proper care. I began to ask God why this had to happen. I turned my questions into a search for some kind of meaning. After tests, I was told I needed triple by-pass heart surgery. My heart symptoms revealed a major problem that needed corrected if I was to live a normal life. God is good. SURRENDER Giving up control to God in our circumstances enables us to face reality as it is and to reconcile our losses. Letting go let’s God do his healing work. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear… (Psalm 46:1-2). The Psalmist realizes he is in trouble. He recognizes that conditions are beyond his control. He comes to a place of acceptance and surrender. God is present. God is his helper. God will see him through. Ironically, giving up control allows God to bring lasting relief.

The orderly came to take me down to surgery. I asked the nurse if I could use the restroom. I shut the door and was alone. It was just me and God in that moment. I said, “Lord Jesus, I don’t know if I will soon see you face to face or if I will come through this and live to do whatever else you have in mind for me. I want you to know that I love you Jesus and I give myself into your hands.” That moment of surrender gave me great peace and the Lord brought me through surgery well. SUPPORT People recover better from disaster and personal loss when they have strong spiritual and community support. God made us for relationships. We need a support group to help us deal with life’s problems and to celebrate life’s victories. We espe-cially need a caring community to help us when disaster strikes. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of be-lievers (Galatians 6:10). A spiritual community of believers helps us cope with the stress of everyday living and the recov-ery of personal health. Hurricane Irma hit Florida as I was home recovering from my heart surgery. I was not able to do much physically and de-pended on others for simple things like walking to the bath-room or taking a shower. My family was a rock during this time. My sons helped us prepare for the hurricane and clean up the storm debris afterward. My daughter ran errands. My wife waited on me without complaint. Church members brought food, visited, called, wrote letters and cards, and took care of the multiple responsibilities at church. My staff mem-bers stepped up and preached and ran the everyday activities of the church. Hundreds of people prayed for me. I am still overwhelmed by the strong showing of support and I am deeply humbled and grateful. STAMINA Perseverance through adversity trusts that God can work through our brokenness and loss. Hope moves us forward to full recovery. Stamina suggests fortitude and endurance. It is one of the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. Stamina means that we press on even if the circumstances and troubles re-main. We do what is right even if we continue to struggle. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9). My cousin Bill Elliott was the third generation owner of a lumber yard in Ohio. He had a job related accident several years ago that left him physically injured and in constant pain. I knew he was only able to go to work for a few hours at a time and he was confined to his house most days. My sister called me September 19 to tell me that Bill had passed away. We learned that he had pancreatic cancer and had kept this from the family. This came as a complete surprise and shock. Bill was a Christian but I was saddened to learn of his pass-ing. I went to the office for the first time since my surgery the next day on September 20. I was sorting through the accumu-lated mail and came across a card. I opened the card and it was dated September 11.

International Learning Center The International Learning Center has been a busy place since school started on August 21, 2017. As of Monday, Sept 25, we have registered 54 students from 17 countries. What opportunities we have to teach English and share the love of Jesus. We also tried to prepare the students for hurri-cane Irma, stayed in touch with them after the storm, and en-couraged them to know that God is in control no matter what storms enter their lives. We have 3 students from Puerto Rico. One has not heard from his family following hurricane Maria and another has heard from his wife's family but not his. Please keep these students in your prayers. One of our former teachers moved to Puerto Rico in May 2017. We know they were physically well a day after Maria but lost the top 2 floors of their house. All that remains is the concrete base floor. Pray for all to continue to rely on God in times of trouble. The ILC welcomes Mario Martinez to help us with our music time and his bilingual Spanish/English translating for some of our students. We also welcome Jonah Whitford, the son of a former teacher, to teach Level 2 for the Fall semester. Jonah is a 20-year-old college student who has taught English overseas and was available to teach the Fall semester. He will be missed as we have enrolled several male 20 somethings in his class. Our Nursery continues to need additional workers. We started the semester with 2 wonderful ladies from First Baptist Ala-chua and they have enlisted 2 more from their church. We need workers to hold and play with young children. I am thankful that ILC hosted a 3-day training for teachers and volunteers in August. We were all disappointed that our Ad-vanced training at Lake Yale was canceled because of hurri-cane Irma. Continue to pray for the ILC students and our volunteers. Please consider joining us.

Sunday October 8th All men are invited ! Breakfast in the MAC

It was from my cousin Bill. He said he had not been in commu-nication with me recently because his computer was down but that he soon hoped to talk with me more. He was concerned for me and my church and any damage Hurricane Irma might have caused. He enclosed a substantial check to help the church in the aftermath of the storm. My cousin Bill, dying from cancer, sent a check to help a church struggling from a storm. This is stamina in action: doing good while enduring adversity. Let us not become weary in do-ing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9). Pastor Gregg
