Local artist and church member, Gay Abarr holds a painting of John Wesley, founder of Methodism and admired here by Tom Lewis, Finance Chairman. It will be hung in the Narthex of the Sanctuary or other area with traffic. Gay Abarr graciously used her artistic skills to repair damage and reframe the painting. So now, Wesley UMC has a wonderful painting of the man the church was named for, John Wesley, (1703-1791) the Anglican Clergy, Oxford Don, and Missionary, who led a spiritual renewal movement that resulted in Methodism.
2015 STEWARDSHIP Families should have received their 2015 Pledge cards by now. Wesley’s First Health Fair reaches into the community
Flu shots, dental screenings, the balloon clown, free smoke
detectors, information on nutrition & vitamins, fluoride
treatments, face painting, food and drink were all part of the
Health Fair held at Wesley on Saturday, October 18th. Though
there was a slow start, by 10 am there was a bustle of parents and
children moving from one station to the next, picking up
brochures, pamphlets and free samples on a variety of health
topics.
Thank you to everyone who helped with the Health Fair. Attendees benefitted
from flu vaccinations, blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, Lisa Reid’s
nutritious and delicious food recipes and more. Wesley and ABWA members
greeted and guided attendees and invited them back to a Sunday service. Tiffiny
and Dana made an outstanding lunch for the health providers and volunteers.
Gay Abarr did a superb job face painting the kids and adults. Best of all, thanks
to your generosity, seven guests were able to get flu vaccinations from your
sponsorship. A sincere thanks to all.

A Rewarding Mission Church Under the Bridge, Oct. 19
Sixteen Wesley members
worked with God in the
neighborhood Sunday Oct. 19 by
taking church to under the
'bridge' and to those who live on
the margins. Catherine Fuller
brought the Word through song,
Dr. Hudson spoke the Word, and
Wesley members demonstrated the Word by bringing and serving a large meal to
the crowd. Thanks also to those who made and sent food. A special thanks to
Barbara Parker for making and sending baked beans and slaw. Everyone
appreciated all the good food and hospitality. Thanks, also, to those who donated
water and clothing. All was used. A huge thanks to everyone
for giving generously to those in need and to those who selflessly gave your time,
Sunday afternoon, to make a Christian difference. Susan Howard, Lay Leader
How Do We Live Our Mission? In short, the mission of the Methodist Church is “to make disciples of Jesus
Christ,” based on His words, “go and make followers/disciples of all people in
the world...teach them to obey everything I have taught you.” Matthew 28:19-20.
What does it mean to make or be a disciple of Jesus? Recently, I read an article
that stated “when you make disciples you always get a church. When you make
a church you don’t always get disciples.” That’s pause for thought. Among other
things, the statement suggests being a disciple and attending a church are not
necessarily interchangeable or even the same thing. Am I Jesus' disciple or I am
just a church goer?
The second part: “Teach them to obey everything I have taught you.” That is a
TALL order because He taught a lot. Jesus taught his disciples in a variety of
methods, including by doing. He fed people, healed individuals, dined with those
on the fringe, conversed with outcasts, saved lives, convinced skeptics, gave
business advice (“throw your net on the right side of the boat.” John 21:6) plus so
much more...to people from all walks of life. So, at least some of being Jesus’
disciples must include helping, associating with, witnessing to the people from
all walks who He places in our path or community. “I was hungry, you gave me
food, I was thirst, you gave me a drink (spiritual water and actual water). I was
without clothes and you gave me something to wear, etc.” (Matthew 25:35-40) “I
tell you the truth, anything you did for even the least of my people, you also did
for me.”
As Wesley works to radically reinvent itself, please be open to ministry
opportunities that help us become better disciples and to help us to make others
disciples, including by doing as Jesus did, because when you make disciples you
always get a church.
At Church Under the Bridge, Wesley accepted the opportunity to assist a
ministry who takes worship to the “least of these” right where they are by
feeding, clothing, and witnessing. I am thankful and proud how Wesley, as a
church, responded. I began to see how our members live our mission and
become disciples to spread the word of Jesus. Susan Howard, Lay Leader

ministry. Susan Howard and Gay Abarr speak to guests . The weather was

Thank You & KUDOS to David Hoke David has been busy moving artwork from the old Abiders Room across the hall to the new
INSPIRERS Sunday school class and re-installing. He is also working on some glass
etchings for the doors and windows. Give him a big Thanks next time you see him.

With an annual lease of $30,000 to Wesley, and a congregation of about 120 with 30

First Presbyterian Church on Western. CC passed a motion to forward further discussions to
the Trustees and to develop a lease agreement to begin January 2015.
