Ocean Outlook
Festival of the Imagination
Thanks to the efforts of Damien Farrell and his
committed team, tomorrow’s FOTI should be
the biggest and best so far. We look forward to
seeing everyone enjoying the rides, activities,
food and performances at our community
celebration. All money goes back into our
school to construct the new adventure
playspace.
Please note that while there will be staff
present at the festival, this is a P&C event and
parents/carers are responsible for the safety
and supervision of children at all times.
Kindergarten Open Day –
Wednesday 28th August 9.30am
We look forward to meeting our 2020
Kindergarten enrolments and their families on
Wednesday. Please be sure to let the office
know if you will be attending.
SASS Appreciation Week
School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS)
are crucial to ensure all our students have the
best possible opportunities and experiences.
Next week is SASS Appreciation Week, when
we recognise the wonderful work of our
support staff including our office staff, school
learning support officers, cleaners and general
assistant. These dedicated staff regularly
contribute above and beyond their job
description and paid hours. Thank you!
Bundjalung Language and Culture
Camp
Hope Woods and our Stage 3 Aboriginal
students enjoyed the Bundjalung Culture Camp
at Lake Ainsworth this week which was
sponsored by the Aboriginal Education
Consultative Group (AECG). This was a great
chance for these future leaders to learn more
of the rich Indigenous culture and build
connections with others.
It has been impressive to observe the increase
in cultural knowledge and pride in our
Aboriginal children, along with a willingness of
Aboriginal people to share culture with our
non-Indigenous staff, community and students.
Safety around the school
Please take note of the letter in today’s
newsletter which was also circulated earlier
this week. All road users are asked to exercise
caution around schools to ensure our children
are safe.
Athletics
Well done to all the students who competed in
today’s Zone Athletics Carnival. Check out the
next page for results!
2R Staffing
Unfortunately Sue Riches needs to return to
Alberta, Canada for personal reasons. Mrs
Riches is a highly valued member of our staff on
exchange from Alberta, Canada for the year
and 2R have been benefiting immensely from
her enthusiasm and skills.
In Sue's absence, Ellie Phillips will be teaching
2R. Ellie is also a great teacher who has done a
lot of work with our students. Thanks to Ellie
for taking over. I wish Sue and her family well
back in Canada, and we look forward to her
return.

“tye dying,
printing, clay
works, free
Spaghetti
Circus
classes.”
The Festival of the Imagination (FOTI) is on tomor-
row from 10am - 3pm!
Amongst all of the rides, music and stalls, there will
be tye dying, printing, clay works, free Spaghetti Cir-
cus classes and the Zameret wood community art
project.
Don't forget that there will be an ATM this year on
site - we've never had this before, so there will be
plenty of opportunities to purchase fantastic food
and goodies in order to support fundraising for the
school.
If anyone has the oven burning hot tonight - please
consider making a cake, slice or biscuits to bring
along to the cake stall tomorrow. Please write the
ingredients on the container you bring it in and your
name if you wish for the container to be returned.
Please remember that we are a nut aware school -
so no nuts please.
We will be using environmentally friendly paper
plates etc for the foods but if you remember to bring
your own drinking cups and mugs that’s an added
bonus to our desire to reduce the carbon footprints
we create.
Don't be shy to lend a hand on the day - head to the
rides ticket stall and put your name down if you have
a spare hour or two. A few helping hands at 7am
would also be useful for setting up this amazing festi-
val.
We still need donations of white cotton items for
the tye dye stall. Of if you would like to take part in
tye dying please bring something white to use.
A big thanks this week, in particular, to Rob Brough,
Tom, Ziggy, Christine Melkie, Sigge McKinley, Wayne
Gibbons, John Weir and Damien Farrell and to all of
the unnamed volunteers from across the school
community whose collective inputs make a large
impact.
We would also love to thank Zam Easson for all the
effort, creativity and time she has put in to make this
festival what will be fun and enjoyable for everyone.
See you there!

The Great Book Swap
Providing quality primary education and resources in
remote indigenous communities across Australia is
challenging and books are especially hard to come
by.
Only 36% of students in remote communities have
access to any kind of library and 60% of Aboriginal
children are significantly behind non-Aboriginal chil-
dren by the time they start Year One.
The Indigenous Literacy Fund (ILF) works really hard
to address the literacy gap in 280 of these communi-
ties.
ILF are a national book industry charity and their
objective is to lift literacy levels and instill a lifelong
love of reading.
Many of their projects include publishing collabora-
tions of stories written by school children in remote
communities and well known authors such as Alison
Lester.
On Wednesday 4 September is Indigenous Literacy
Day (ILD), a national celebration of Indigenous cul-
ture, stories, language and literacy.
It is also a day when hundreds of schools around
Australia will take part in the THE GREAT BOOK
SWAP.
Ocean Shores Public School wants to be a part of
this annual event and help the ILF raise $350,000 to
buy 35,000 books to distribute.
What to do:
Before school on Wednesday 4th September bring
along any book/s or puzzles you want to swap and
take them to the hall where tables will be set up.
Each book swap will cost $1
Each puzzle swap will cost $2
The categories will include books suitable for pre-
schoolers through to preteen.
The swap will take place at recess and lunchtime.
Our goal is to raise at least $300 to donate to the
ILF, so please encourage your family to sort through
any unwanted/used books that other children may be
interested in and help support students in remote
communities to access a wide range of book. Don’t
forget your puzzles too.
Any surplus books/puzzles will be donated to charity.

An exciting new scholarship has just been launched
by the NSW Department of Education. Applications
are now open for the teach.MathsNOW Scholarship,
supporting the department’s commitment to ensur-
ing that all NSW public school students have access
to high-quality mathematics teachers.
Do you know an industry professional or university
student in a career area requiring tertiary studies in
mathematics, such as engineering, accounting, finance
or IT, who would make a great secondary mathemat-
ics teacher? The teach.MathsNOW Scholarship of-
fers an opportunity to change career path and re-
train as a mathematics teacher in a NSW public
school.
teach.MathsNOW scholars will receive up to
$50,000 in equivalent upfront course contribution
fees, paid part-time employment during studies and a
guaranteed permanent teaching position in a NSW
public school on successful completion.

7 steps to good digital parenting
Seven simple, but still challenging steps to become a
good digital parent. It is definitely a journey, like
parenting itself. There is no such thing as perfection.
Just good enough.
1. Talk With Your Kids
Talk early and often.
Be open and direct
Stay calm
2. Educate Yourself
Search online for anything you don’t understand
Try out the apps, games, and sites yourself
Explore FOSI’s parenting tips and resources
3. Use Parental Controls
Set content and time limits on your kids’ devices
Routinely check privacy settings on social media
Monitor your kids’ use and their screen time
4. Set Ground Rules and Enforce Conse-
quences
Discuss and sign a family safety agreement
Restrict where and when devices can be used
Remove tech privileges when rules are broken
5. Friend and Follow But Don’t Stalk
Follow your kids on social media
Respect their online space and freedom
Don’t flood their accounts with comments
6. Explore, Share, and Celebrate
Go online with your kids and
Explore their digital world
Share your own online experiences
Learn from each other and have fun
7. Be a Good Digital Role Model
Curb your own bad digital habits
Know when and where to unplug
Show your kids how to collaborate
and be kind online

“When a volcano erupts, people get
surprised, but it is a volcano! There is
no ‘place’ for the surprise! The big-

are not serious about the matters of
life and death! Be serious or alterna-
