"General Service Matters" Quite a few of our local A.A. members attend the annual Sessions By-the-Sea and Footprints in the Winter Sand conferences in Ocean City. A good number participate in the Delaware State A.A. Convention in nearby Rehoboth Beach in May. A few venture as far as Solomons for the Southern Maryland "Woodstock" roundup in March, and some have attended weekend A.A. gatherings in Annapolis, MD, Staunton, VA, or Philadelphia or Lancaster, PA. One group of friends journeys all the way to Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, in November of each year. So it was with a good bit of surprise that I realized I was the only local A.A. member to attend our very own Maryland State A.A. Convention this past month. The 43rd Annual Area 29 Maryland State A.A. Convention was held in Hagerstown from Thursday, June 13 to Sunday, July 16. Hosted by the State Convention Committee of Maryland General Service, Inc. (Area 29) with Al-Anon participation, this yearly happening included an amazing array of events: Seven A.A. speaker meetings, two Al-Anon speaker meetings, dozens of Alcothon meetings, two combined A.A./Al-Anon workshops, two interactive A.A. workshops, two interactive Al-Anon workshops, two D.J. dances, daily prayer and meditation sessions, two ice cream socials, a movie night, a recovery play, an Old Timer's Panel, a banquet, a buffet dinner, a picnic lunch, a sobriety countdown, and lots of fellowship among 705 extremely enthusiastic participants. There were several members present with over 50 years of continuous sobriety, including Tom S. (55 years) on the Old Timer's Panel and Charlie R. (52 years), the Sunday morning speaker. As a matter of fact, the Old Timer's Panel also included four other members with over 40 years of continuous sobriety and two with well over 30 years. The Maryland General Service room housed an extensive archives display, as well as A.A. and Al-Anon literature, A.A. Grapevine materials, and displays by the Area Delegate, the Area Registrar, the Maryland Young People's Bid Committee, and the Maryland General Service Cooperation with the Professional Community, Corrections, Intergroup Liaison, Public Information, Special Needs-Accessibility, Treatment Facilities, and Workshop Committees. My personal contribution was to leave 50 Ocean City Where & When's on the announcements and flyers table for those who might be heading to the beach in the near future. The movie night featured a screening of the now-classic 1989 Hallmark Hall of Fame movie "My Name is Bill W." The recovery play was a humorous and entertaining spoof of the early 1970's television sitcom "Get Smart." My personal favorite activity (besides the six Alcothon meetings I attended) was the interactive workshops, which engaged and involved all attendees in some very fascinating workshop topics. The rooms were comfortable, the food delicious, the coffee and soda plentiful, and the service at the Clarion Hotel and Hager Hall Conference Center was wonderful. For those so inclined, there were also a pool, a Jacuzzi, an exercise room, and a business center. Rooms included Wi-Fi or cable modem connections, flat-screen TV, refrigerator, microwave, and coffeemaker. The convention room rates were reasonable and even cheaper accommodations were available nearby. Our main convention speakers came from California, British Columbia, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, as well as Maryland. Friendships were made or renewed, recovery was shared, and a good time was had by all. I'm already looking forward to the 44th Annual Maryland State Convention next June. Fortunately, I won't have to wait that long to get my next Maryland convention booster shot. The Area 29 Fall Convention has already begun accepting mail-in and online registrations for Maryland General Service's big Fall event at the same Clarion Hotel in Hagerstown from Thursday, October 24 to Sunday, October 27, 2013. Building on the experience and success of the State Convention in June, the Fall Convention will feature an even more impressive array of speakers -- none of whom has ever spoken before at a Maryland convention. The very popular interactive workshop format will be expanded, another movie night is scheduled, a costume dance will be held, two days of children's activities are planned, two ice cream socials and another Old Timer's Panel are on the agenda, and the Saturday night entertainment will be provided by Jack F., whose blend of humor, stories, songs, puppets, and interactive audience participation is sure to be a major hit. The daily Alcothon meetings will run until midnight, and morning prayer and meditation sessions are scheduled. As you can easily see, the best of the State Convention will become even better in October. Send in your registration today and join me on the Broad Highway in the Fellowship of the Spirit. It's an experience you won't want to miss! Don B., District Committee Member Maryland General Service District 32

It is customary for AA groups to give to our area, state and World Services.

Percentages vary and suggestions can be found in AA pamphlets. In the

pamphlet, ‘Self-Support: Where money and spirituality mix’, it gives an

example of a common split after expenses:

10% to District 10% to Area Committee

30% to General Service Office 50% to Intergroup
