Occupation-Based Teacher Certification What you need to know!

Congratulations on being hired as a new CTE (Career and Technical Education) teacher! This guide will

help you understand, and guide you through, the certification process. First, here are a few contacts that

you should be familiar with:

Dr. Mike Walach-CTE Program Coordinator at EKU [email protected]

Linda Huff-Administrative Assistant at EKU [email protected]

Dr. Steve Fardo-Field based teacher educator EKU [email protected]

Dr. Tim Ross Applied Engineering and Technology Department chair [email protected]

Dr. Dave Dailey-Professor in our CTE Master’s Program [email protected]

Mr. Frank Kincaid-Adjunct Faculty member in our CTE master’s program. Dr. Walach and Dr. Fardo are your main points of contact in the CTE program. They both teach at the New Teacher Institute (NTI), work as field-base teacher educators to support new teachers in their classrooms, and serve as KTIP teacher educators for CTE KTIP teacher interns. Dr. Walach also teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the CTE teacher education program. Dr. Walach will serve as advisor for most CTE students with support from Dr. Fardo and Dr. Ross. Linda Huff will work with you to help you enroll at EKU, enroll in courses if you need assistance, and to process your tuition waivers. We are here to help you navigate this process, please use us if you need help! What you need to do to maintain your teaching certificate!

1. When you are first hired you are given a 1 year teaching certificate. If you do nothing, this certification will expire in 1 year and you will not be allowed to teach once the certificate has expired!

2. You must enroll in an approved 64 hour, occupation-based, CTE teacher certification program. Only 5 schools in Kentucky are approved by EPSB (Educational Professional Standards Board) to offer this 64 hour program: Eastern Kentucky University, Moorhead State University, Murray State University, Western Kentucky University, and University of Louisville.

3. In order to renew your license at the end of year 1 you must have completed all of the following:

1. Complete and pass the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP). 2. Attend the 5 day New Teacher Institute (NTI). 3. Attend the 3 day follow-up New Teacher Institute (NTI). 4. Earn 3 College credits in an approved 64 hour occupation-based CTE program.* * Undergraduate CTE students will earn their three credits in CTE 164. Graduate CTE students will earn their three credits in CTE 810. These three credits are earned by attending both the 5-day and 3-day NTI and by completing additional assignments for the class (CTE 164 or CTE 810). CTE 164 and CTE 810 are college courses that you need to sign up for and be enrolled in! This is not done automatically for you, you must make sure that you have enrolled!

4. In year 2 and every year thereafter until you have finished your 64 hour program, you must take and pass 6 college courses a year in your 64-hour approved program. You can take more than 6 credits a year, but not less. Your tuition waiver will cover 6 credits each fall, spring, and summer session for a total of 18 free credits per year if you choose to do that many. Any credits taken over 6 per semester, or over 18 total for the year will be at your expense. Note: Tuition waiver only covers your tuition, it does not cover books, student fees, application fees etc. Unpaid balances will accrue late fees that you will be responsible for!

5. A form CA-2 or CA-3 (depending on if your school is locally controlled or state controlled, your principal will know which form) will need to be completed and sent to EPSB with your official transcripts showing your 3 credits for year 1 or your 6 credits for each year thereafter.

Which program to enroll in? If you already have a bachelor’s degree (B.S., B.S.N., etc.) you will enroll as a graduate student. The good news for you, is that you only have 7 courses to complete to finish your certification as your technical core and general education courses have already been completed in your bachelor’s degree. The program you will enroll in is Master of Science in Career and Technical Education, Occupation and training option. Master’s students must apply to the graduate school on-line. There is an application fee, and required application materials. They must all be submitted to the graduate school! Missing materials or unpaid application fees will hold up your application. You will need to follow up and check the status of your application with the graduate school, don’t expect someone to call you to let you know there is a problem. The CTE program can’t do anything until you have been accepted by the graduate school. If you have an associate degree, or no college education at all, you will enroll in the CTE certificate program. This program will get you through the certification process. Once the certification is complete, most people will have earned enough credits for an associate degree in CTE. Some students may have to do some additional hours, depending on their background, experience, professional licenses etc. Undergraduate students typically apply to EKU with a paper application supplied at NTI. This application can also be requested from [email protected]. Make contact with Linda early and get to know her. She will help you. She will help process your application and get you enrolled at EKU. Once you are enrolled however, it will be up to you to register for courses each semester. You need to pay attention to registration dates, no one is going to contact you to tell you to register. You can contact Dr. Walach or Dr. Fardo for advising help however if you have questions. Linda cannot answer advising questions, but can help with processes such as tuition waivers and applications for admission. Rank Change When hired, you are hired at Rank 3. There are three ranks, rank 1, rank 2, and rank 3. To move from Rank 3 to Rank 2 you need to have taught for 3 complete school years AND have your 64 hour certification program complete. When you have achieved both of these goals, you will fill out a form CA-1 which will be signed by your supervisor and sent to Dr. Walach at EKU. You will also have to pay a fee and send official transcripts either with your documents, or directly to EPSB. Dr. Walach will review and sign off on your CA-1 which will then be process through the College of Business and Technology, then teacher certification in the College of Education, then sent on to EPSB. These are due by September 1, so allow for plenty of time for processing. Also, make sure all credits are showing on your transcripts before you request copies. EPSB will reject them if they are not complete.

To move from rank 2 to rank 1 you need to have your certification program complete and 6 years of teaching AND a bachelor’s degree. Again, you will fill out a form CA-1 and complete the same steps you did for your Rank 2. Degrees If you started the CTE program with no college education, or only an AS degree, you will be very close to a B.S. degree once you finish your 64 hour certification program. EKU offers a bachelor’s degree in CTE and the A.S. degree in CTE rolls directly into our B.S. degree. There are no wasted courses in the 64 hour program or A.S. degree, they are all part of the B.S. degree. Graduate students will be only 3 classes away from a Master’s degree when they finish their 64 hour program. Most students continue on and finish the M.S. degree because the tuition is free, and they are so close by the time they finish their certification program. Tuition waiver is good all the way up to a Ph.D. as long as you stay in education or a related field. Many of our health science instructors will go on for a BSN, MSN, or similar. Many of our teachers will also go on for a Master in CTE administration, and become some of the best CTE principals in the state. We also have teachers in the building trades that go on and complete the Master of Construction Management here in the department of Applied Engineering and Technology or the Master in Applied Engineering Management.
