ObjectiveTo use media

clips, an acronym and real life scenarios to

understand the criteria of a just war and decide whether a war

can ever be just.

Page 2: Objective

Grade CAll will be able to define the

term just war and list the criteria of such.

Grade BMost will be able to explain why

the just war theory is important and identify the

main problems with the theory.

Grade A/A*Some will be able to assess whether war can ever be ‘just’

and give an opinion on whether people should ever

go to war.

this lesson are…

STEALING/THEFT

Page 5: Objective

I stole some aid off someone else in my village to

feed my children. They hadn’t eaten properly in days

and I was worried that if they didn't

eat soon they would die.

Was I WRONG?

ADULTERY/CHEATINGWhat about your wife?

She will never know!

Page 7: Objective

The vicar who has found new love as his wife fights dementia This time last year, just as the clocks had turned back and the cold, dark nights were drawing in, Terry Murphy returned to

his home and sat in solitary silence, contemplating all the little things he would miss about Mo, his wife of 40 years, now that she was gone for ever.

Although physically healthy, she no longer recognises her husband or even knows that she was ever married. Apart from the odd ‘thank you’ or ‘lovely’, she is unable to communicate or perform even basic tasks, such as going to the toilet or

washing, without the help of staff at the home. She has, indeed, gone for ever — into what, for the husband who still adores her, seems a living death.

Bereft at his loss, the 66-year-old retired Baptist minister found his thoughts turning to suicide.

Mother-of-two Merion Dance, 61, has known Terry professionally for more than a decade thanks to his work as a chaplain for the fire service, where she works as a

fire safety administrator.

Merion’s husband died almost four years ago, and, over the past 11 months, she and Terry have formed a close relationship. There have been dinner dates and cinema

trips, and they have recently returned from their first holiday together, in Mallorca. It would take a hard heart to begrudge Terry moving on with his life and finding a

new love, even if it is only a year since Mo was lost to him.

And there lies the issue. For Terry’s wife is not dead. A few miles away, Mo, a 65-year-old former primary school teacher and the mother of Terry’s two children, is in

a care home in the final stages of dementia.

Is he doing WRONG?

Muammar Gaddafi was the official ruler of Libya from 1969 to

2011. Gaddafi gained power

through violent means. Gaddafi

abuse them!

Did the man who killed him do WRONG?

Page 10: Objective

War brings real problems for

people, especially religious believers. Some that war is ALWAYS WRONG,

while others maintain that wars,

although awful, may sometimes

have to be fought.

WAR – Right OR Wrong?

Page 11: Objective

This concept has always existed. Any person going to war would always work out if it was worth the expense in lives, money and

land they would gain. The theory was developed by Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-74) who suggested a war was morally

just or right if it met three criteria (this was later added to and today there are SEVEN).

The JUST WAR theory

What do you think is

meant by a ‘JUST WAR’?

A war which is fought for

the right reasons and in the right

way?

reasons’?Make a list

Stewie = Sufficient ForceIt would not be proportional to drop a nuclear

weapon on a small country for

invading a small island.

The force used must be

proportional to the cause,

surroundings and scale of the war.Conduct during war

Page 26: Objective

Peter and = Proper AuthorityThe politicians or authority must make the most important decisions to ensure the war remains fair and just. Right to go to war

Page 27: Objective

Chris = Controlled ViolenceEvery effort must be made to make sure that as little

violence as possible is used

to achieve victory and methods should AVOID

KILLING CIVILIANS.

No weapons of mass

destruction!Conduct during war

Page 28: Objective

Love = Last Resort

All non violent means of solving the conflict must have been tried and failed before you turn to war

Right to go to war

Page 29: Objective

Eating = Establish Good

. It must be fought to restore peace. A war can be fought if it is believed that it would prevent a

greater evil. Most people argue that

Britain and her allies, by taking on the Nazi regime of

Adolf Hitler, prevented greater

evil from happening

Right to go to war

Page 30: Objective

You cannot go to war and waste the lives of brave soldiers for something

which you have very little chance of winning, lives should not be wasted.

Red = Reasonable chance of success

Right to go to war

Page 31: Objective

Jam = Just CauseThe war must

be started for a good

reason – e.g. self-defence,

and not because of

greed.

Using the picture clues IDENTIFY FOUR PROBLEMS with the just war theory.

What’s the PROBLEM?

The existence of modern weapons

including WEAPONS OF

MASS DISTRUCTION

means that large numbers of

people are killed.

There is NEVER a MORALLY

GOOD REASON for killing others.

Some AUTHORITIES will go to war

claiming it is for a JUST CAUSE

when really it is AGRESSION and they could have

found better ways of solving their

problems.

All wars are VIOLENT and DANGEROUS

therefore the just war is no longer

relevant – it never was.

Page 37: Objective

The main problem with the JUST WAR theory is that both sides in a war may claim that their cause is ‘just’.

For example in WW2 Hitler claimed the

Nazis were right and just in what they

fought for, just as the allied forces did.

What’s the PROBLEM?

We are fighting for

a JUST CAUSE!

NO!!! We are fighting for a JUST CAUSE!

Page 40: Objective

More recently, the just war theory has been used and manipulated by skilful leaders to justify their actions and to suggest that what they

have done is God’s will.

‘This will be a monumental struggle of good verses evil,

but good will prevail’ . Said after the invasion of Iraq – Bush declared the USA as the force of good and enemies of the USA as the ‘axis of evil’.

In response, Osama bin Laden, the leader of the al-

Qaeda declared...

‘I swear by almighty God....that neither the United Sates nor he who lives in the

United States will enjoy security before...all the infidel

armies leave the land of Muhammad.’

Does God take

sides in war?
