    About the MeetingObesity 2012, the 30th Annual Scientic Meeting o The ObesitySociety, brings together the most prestigious proessionals in

    the eld o obesity, rom world-renowned basic and clinical

    researchers to educators, advocates and practitioners. Through

    its scientic, educational, mentoring and networking events,

    Obesity 2012 is dedicated to increasing knowledge, stimulating

    research, urthering careers, and promoting prevention and better

    treatment or those aected by obesity. Attendees will take part in

    scientic and education sessions, oral and poster presentations,

    and other programs covering the ull interdisciplinary regimen

    o obesity research, education, advocacy and development,

    including key lectures rom the top proessionals in each eld.

    The program is organized around six thematic tracks:

    internationally recognized experts on critically important topics.

    research, treatment and prevention.

    Debates: Speakers will present opposing points o view on

    Abot the ProgramThe Obesity Society is the premier organizationdedicated to the problem o obesity and its healthconsequences. Its members include basic andclinical scientists, clinicians, practitioners, caregivers,researchers, policy makers and public health ocials

    with an interest in the problem o obesity in adultsand children.

    For the past 30 years, proessionals have gatheredor a scientic conerence to discuss and disseminatethe state-o-art inormation on obesity researchand clinical care. The meeting will present 4 dayso symposia and key lectures on topics related toobesity that include metabolism and the integrativephysiology o obesity, neuroscience, clinical trials andinterventions, population-based studies, public policyeorts, and obesity clinical care. In addition, researchwill be presented in oral abstract presentations andposter sessions throughout the conerence.

    Who Shold Attend?The session topics and presentations selectedby the members o the Annual Scientic MeetingProgram Committee are intended to meet the needso researchers and healthcare proessionals whowant to be updated on advances in the prevention,treatment, causes, and health consequences oobesity.     The George A. Bray Founders Award recognizes sig-nicant contributions that advance the scientic or clinical basisor understanding or treating obesity. It also recognizes exten-sive involvement with The Obesity Society. Recipients receive aplaque and a $1,000 cash prize. The award is presented duringthe opening session at which the recipient is invited to presentthe George A. Bray Founders Award Lecture.

    The TOPS Research Achievement Award recognizessingular achievement or contribution to research in the eld oobesity. This award is made possible through an annual grantrom the Take O Pounds Sensibly Foundation (TOPS). Recipi-ents receive a plaque and a $5,000 cash prize plus a travel grantto the Annual Scientic Meeting. The award is presented duringa session at which the recipient is invited to present the TOPSResearch Achievement Award Lecture.

    The Lilly Scientifc Achievement Awardrecognizesexcellence in an established research career and is made pos-sible through an annual grant rom the Eli Lilly PharmaceuticalCompany. Recipients receive a plaque and a $5,000 cash prizeplus a travel grant to the Annual Scientic Meeting. The awardis presented during a plenary session at which the recipient isinvited to present the Lilly Scientic Achievement Award Lecture.To be eligible or this award, the recipient must be within 15years o receiving his or her terminal degree.

    The Mickey Stunkard Lietime Achievement Awardis designed to recognize people who, like Albert (Mickey)

    Stunkard, have made a lietime o outstanding contribution to theeld o obesity in terms o scholarship, mentorship, and educa-tion. Recipients receive a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize. Theaward is presented during a plenary session at which the recipi-ent is invited to present the Mickey Stunkard Lietime Achieve-ment Award Lecture.

    Atkinson-Stern Award or Distinguished PublicServicerecognizes an individual or organization whose workhas signicantly improved the lives o those aected by obesity,whether through research, public policy, patient care, or othermeans. This award was established by a git rom Thomas A.Wadden. Recipients receive a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize.This award is presented during the opening session.

    The Ethan Sims Young Investigator Award recognizesexcellence in research by a young investigator based on his/hersubmitted abstract and oral presentation at the Annual ScienticMeeting. The recipient is selected rom among ve nalists whoare chosen on the basis o the quality o their abstract submit-ted to The Obesity Societys Annual Scientic Meeting. All venalists receive travel grants to the Annual Scientic Meeting.The award winner also receives a $1,000 cash prize. The award isbased upon the quality o the nominated authors presentation atThe Obesity Society Annual Meeting and is announced during theannual meeting.

    Outstanding Journal Research Articles Publishedin Obesityrecognize exemplary research in basic, clinical,or population manuscripts published in Obesity. The awardsare sponsored by Nature Publishing Group and presentedduring the opening session. Each award recipient receivesa $500 cash prize.

    The Editors Choice Best Reviewer Awardsrecognizeexcellence in Obesity manuscript review. Criteria are the numbero articles reviewed and the rapidity o review. The awards arepresented during the opening session.

    The Early-Career Research Grants recognize new inves-tigators, dened as individuals who have received a PhD in thepast ve years or MD in the past eight years and who currently

    hold ull time, entry-level positions (e.g., post-doctoral ellow,instructor, assistant proessor) at an established academic/research institution. Applicants may request up to $25,000. Aninitial one-page letter o intent should be submitted or review byan interdisciplinary committee. Deadline or submission o a lettero intent is April 16th.

    Nutrisystem, Inc. Research GrantNutrisystem, Inc.,a leading provider o structured meal programs or weight lossand weight maintenance is pleased to announce an opportunityor an investigator interested in perorming a clinical study usingtheir Nutrisystem or Healthcare Proessionals program. Fundingo $40,000, plus any required quantity o program meals, will beissued or one proposal this year.

    Pat Simons Travel Grants are awarded to young investi-gators based on the quality o their submitted abstracts. Firstauthors o submitted abstracts may apply to receive a $500 travegrant i they are currently registered or an undergraduate orgraduate degree, are currently training in a post-doctoral ellow-ship or i they completed their highest college or university de-gree no more than ve years beore the abstract was submitted.

    Volunteer Opportunity or Students, Residents & Postdocs

    Volunteer your time at the Annual Scientic Meeting in exchange or a signicantly reduced registration ee. Students can optto volunteer six hours o their time during Obesity 2012 to serve as room monitors during meeting sessions. The volunteerevents are in 2-hour timeslots and can be spread throughout the meeting. Follow the procedure or volunteers during theregistration process.

    Volunteers will be accepted on a rst-come, rst-served basis until the openings are all lled. Ater the Schedule o Events isnalized it will be sent to all volunteers. They will have the chance to sign up to work whichever events they choose, again ona rst-come, rst-served basis. I their choices are no longer available, they will be randomly assigned. Once assignments arecomplete, specic instructions will be emailed to all volunteers in advance o the annual meeting.
