The old clothes collection earned

Durkar an amazing £440- quite

literally money for old rope! In view of

this success another collection has

been organised for the 19th May.

Chris is bringing a bigger van so

please everyone make sure you have

an extra big clear out and ask all your

friends for their old clothes and

shoes too. You might get some funny

looks but this is a seriously easy

way to earn lots of dosh for the

club.

Part of team C4CC helped our Charity

Aid2Africa by Abseiling down Fort Dunlop,

all 33 metres of it!! and raised nearly

£1000. What a Team!!

In the past we have been involved through

our registered charity in a number of

sustainable projects.

In essence each project is one where after

the initial funding, the project generates

sufficient income to replenish itself and

produce a profit.

We have established poultry and piggery

projects in Zimbabwe in the past as well

as the cultivation of land to grow Maize.

In Kenya, last year, we cultivated 2 acres

of land with Maize and beans. The yield as

re-cultivated the land again this year and

the profit was the equivalent of 10% of the

annual staffing costs of the school.

TRAINING &EMPLOYMENT

Nearly two-thirds of young offenders are unemployed at the time of arrest.

Youth crime – links to unemployment and educational underachievement

Source: The Prince‟s Trust

The study, called the Prince's Trust Macquarie Youth Index, found young

people were twice as likely to self-harm or suffer panic attacks if they had

been jobless for a year.

About one in six respondents to the survey said being out of work was as

stressful as a family breakdown, and one in eight said unemployment gave

them nightmares.

Half of young people seeking work said visits to a job centre made them

feel ashamed, and more than half said that job-searching had left them

feeling disillusioned or desperate. (OATS informal local communal job clubs!)

The study showed young people who were not in education, employment or

training were less happy across „all‟ areas of their lives.

Martina Milburn, the charity's chief executive, said the longer young people

were out of work, "the greater the risk".

Job hunt = Feelings of 'shame'

The Prince‟s Trust Business Programme offers financial support and mentor

advice to help disadvantaged young people to start up their own businesses.

After 12 months, 96 per cent of people supported through this programme are

still trading or in alternative employment, education or training.

The taxpayer‟s bill for benefits– £20 million per week.

Trust‟s flagship 12-week programme of personal development training, aimed

mainly at unemployed young people. In 2005-6, 60 per cent of unemployed

participants went on to jobs, education or training on completion of the course.

Get into . . . is a short course enabling young people to boost their confidence

while gaining work experience in a specific industry sector. More than 50 per

cent of young participants are in full-time work three months after they have

completed the programme.

“TEEN – AGERS”

NEXT LEAD PROJECT

Mr Hunt also said he believed the UK should learn from Asian cultures

where there was "reverence and respect for older people" and

"residential care is a last rather than a first option".

It is a source of "national shame" that as many as 800,000 people in

England are "chronically lonely", Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has

said

“TEEN – AGERS”

"Some five million people say television

is their main form of company"

"If we are to tackle the challenge of an ageing society, we must learn from this

and restore and reinvigorate the social contract between generations

AN OATS NEW LEAD PROJECT

“TEEN – AGERS”

„Workless not useless‟

OATS developing the social contract between generations

„ONLY and Lonely‟

•Older people are particularly vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness owing to loss

of friends and family, mobility or income.

• Social isolation and loneliness have a detrimental effect on health and wellbeing.

Studies show that being lonely or isolated can impact on blood pressure, and is closely

linked to depression.

• The impact of loneliness and social isolation on an individual‟s health and wellbeing has

cost implications for health and social care services. Investment is needed to ensure that

voluntary organisations can continue to help alleviate loneliness and improve the

quality of life of older people, reducing dependence on more costly services.

• The range of interventions for alleviating loneliness and social isolation can be grouped

into one-to-one interventions, group services and wider community engagement. Those

that look most effective include befriending, social group schemes and Community

Navigators

Preventing loneliness and social isolation

among older people

Overall potential savings outweigh the costs

of delivering befriending.

Case study: Providing companionship and emotional support

Oxfordshire Befriending at End of Life (OxBEL) is run by Age UK Oxfordshire

and receives funding from the Department of Health and the local primary

care trust. OxBEL currently has 60 volunteers, who have undergone

comprehensive training and receive on going supervision and support

from paid volunteer coordinators. The volunteers provide one-to-one

befriending to adults of all ages, who either have a life threatening condition

or are at end of life.

Befriending can last for a matter of weeks, months or many years. This free

service is currently focusing mainly on those on the End of Life Register, who

are referred either by health and social care professionals or by themselves.

The charity‟s latest annual survey among its service users

demonstrates the profound difference that this social group

scheme makes:

• 95 per cent have made friends with the volunteers

• 86 per cent feel less lonely

• 83 per cent now feel part of a community

• 61 per cent feel more confident

• 22 per cent see their doctor less.
