We may pity the poor soul who has consistent bad luck but he has one

advantage over his fellows who have had nothing but good fortune… he

knows that he can survive the worst that fortune has in store for him.

A Roman philosopher of the first century, Seneca recognized this

seeming paradox. The person upon whom fortune continually smiles is

made unhappy by uncertainty. Never having been tested, he wonders

how he would manage if his good luck changed to bad. It may help to

keep this in mind when we experience a run of bad luck.

We have no “standard” service. Each family we serve has unique

needs and we tailor our service to meet these. Our best references are

from the families we have served.

Properly maintained headlights vast ly improve driver safety

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replac ing them. Indu stry experts recommend replac ing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replac ing them in pairs to make sure the vehic le’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehic les today, spec ial headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

My own prescription for health is less paperwork and more running barefoot through the grass. ~Terri Guillemets

Batavia • 2 State Street • 343-8150

CURE ! ! BEFORE SUMMER 2016 • Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot

because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot,

infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance.

• Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications.

• There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails.

• A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment.

• Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2016. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this

newer treatment.

Dr. Joseph Canzoneri PODIATRIC MEDICINE & SURGERY

YOUR FUNGAL

TOENAILS

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Tremors Aren’t Always Sign of Parkinson’s DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with essential tremor. Propranolol 10 mg has not helped. Sometimes I can write and eat with no shaking, but other times the shaking is so bad that the food falls off the fork or I cannot read my printing or writing. If I drink a beer, it seems to relax me enough that in five minutes I can write or eat quite normally nearly every time. I’ve been told that it doesn’t appear to be Parkinson’s. Any suggestions will be enormously appreciated. -- J.N.

ANSWER: Essential tremor, sometimes called benign familial tremor, is common. Often, one has a family history of tremor. It is not Parkinson’s disease; however, it isn’t always “benign” in that, for some people, it can be disabling, preventing a person from not only writing, but, as in your case, activities of daily living such as eating.

Alcohol has long been known to reduce the tremor temporarily, but it must be taken cautiously, since regular use will diminish its effectiveness, requiring higher doses for effectiveness -- and, as I have written many times, excess alcohol is a major cause of many medical problems. Occasional use with meals is reasonable.

Other effective treatments for essential tremor include anti- epilepsy medications such as primidone, gabapentin and topiramate. Unfortunately, all of these can have side effects, so they are best prescribed by an expert, such as a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders.

For serious essential tremor not responsive to medications, deep brain stimulation (via electrodes placed surgically) is effective.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2009, and she is taking Namenda and Aricept to help slow the advancement of the disease. I am writing because she complains of being cold all the time. She and my father keep the temperature in their house at 80 degrees, and my mother wears winter clothes, a coat and a blanket in the house. She sometimes sweats through the clothes, but we can’t persuade her to remove any layers. The house is uncomfortably hot for anyone else, and yet she says she is cold.

Her general practitioner has said that this is part of her disease. Is there anything else you have heard of that could explain this? -- C.L.

ANSWER: I have seen a lot of people with dementia of all kinds, but I haven’t personally seen this degree of intolerance to cold. Her doctor may have more experience than I do, but I didn’t find much about it written in the medical literature. Every person is different, and it’s possible this is just part of how the dementia is affecting her.

However, cold intolerance to this degree suggests some alternate possibilities. The most important and likely is low thyroid levels, which can also cause a condition that looks like dementia and would certainly make dementia worse. I bet her doctor has checked for it. If not done recently, she should have her thyroid level checked.

Other, less-common causes include Addison’s disease (inability to make appropriate amounts of steroid hormones), iron deficiency, anemia from any cause and severe malnutrition.

According to the National Institutes of Health, sun-protective c lothing can protec t adults and children from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, exposure to w hich can cause skin cancer. Sun-protective c lothing is typically made w ith fabrics designed to absorb or reflec t ultraviolet, or UV, radiation. M uch like sunscreen is rated for its sun-protec tion fac tor, or SPF, sun-protective c lothing is given an ultraviolet protec tion fac tor, or UPF. UPF even provides a broader spectrum of protection than SPF, protecting from both ultraviolet A and B radiation, w hereas SPF protects largely against ultraviolet B. Clothing w ith a UPF rating of 40 or greater provides excellent protec tion, blocking nearly 98 percent of UV radiation. Doctors recommend that people w ho are at greater risk of skin cancer, such as those w ith blue eyes, fair skin, a large number of moles, and red hair, w ear sun-protective c lothing w hen exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time.

“Alternative to a nursing home”

APPLES are a low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and also are

a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system.

But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes

to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary

data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who

ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did

not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble

fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant

compounds found in apples.

HARMFUL HABITS Consuming sports drinks, fruit

juices, and carbonated beverages that are high in sugar content is not the only habit that can threaten the health of your teeth. Habits involving chewing on pencils and ice can also cause teeth to crack. If this absentminded chomping on inappropriate objects irritates the soft tissue inside a tooth (pulp), sharp or lingering toothaches triggered by eating hot or cold foods and drinks may follow. With this in mind, it is potentially equally harmful to use your teeth to open bottles or plastic packaging. Teeth should never be used in place of scissors, razors, bottle openers, and other tools. Misusing teeth for anything other than their intended purposes invites damage, which may prove costly.

Today’s helpful and interesting column has been brought to you

as a public service. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL , we take the time to listen to our patients and suggest ways they can help themselves to better dental health. Please call us at 585.343.4246 to make an appointment. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre , where our extremely qualified staff will provide you with dental care of the highest quality, utilizing the most modern procedures available.

P.S. Always floss (or use a toothpick) after eating potato chips, raisins; and other sticky, sugary, or starchy foods.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.

Share your angel with Penny Saver readers. He or she just might inspire others to be an angel, too! Submit at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown.

A Winter’s Day

If only winter’s sunshine

behind those thickened clouds,

would break through with vengeance

and beam upon us proud.

Let your rays come forth, oh sun,

to glitter on the snow.

Bring joy to this frosty world;

your light upon us glow.

Where are you winter sunshine?

You’re so often hidden away.

Our days are dark and dreary

because you never stay.

But spring will come in nature’s time

and we will see you yet,

as buds come forth in newness

and the stage for warmth is set.

Impatience is my companion

as I wait for season’s change.

Please come oh winter sunshine

and cheer my mood again.

Congratulations to our

A Letter From Our Children By Joseph G. Langen

The ultimate test of human conscience may be the willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations.

~ Gaylord Nelson

I met an eight year old girl on the beach early one morning. As I approached her, the girl asked me what I was looking for. I told her sharks’ teeth and showed her my small handful. She showed me her handful and she offered them to me.

My encounter reminded me how innocent, curious, and generous children can be. As adults, we often become obsessed by our search to improve our collection of things and become preoccupied with fear that someone will take them from us. In the process we move faster each day and forget the joy of standing on a beach or anywhere else in nature for that matter.

Some of us are just beginning our productive years. Some of us are steaming ahead in mid- career. Others are winding down and hopefully have some time and energy left to enjoy our world. In another fifty years, our children and grandchildren will replace us at all the various stages of their own lives.

If they could write us a letter from the future, what would they have to say about the legacy we have left them? Would they thank us for finding a way to understand and accept each other rather than continuing to compete with each other? Would they thank us for finding ways to love rather than hate each other? Would they express their disappointment that we were not able to find a way to live together in harmony?

That future has not yet arrived and there is still time before such a letter is written. We have choices to make every minute of our lives. No matter where we are in our life journey, we can choose to make the world a little better place with our unique contributions. We can also

choose to take whatever we want from the world without giving back in return. We can link with others in their journey through life, ignore them or hate them. We can choose the path of love and acceptance or the path of fear and intolerance.

All of our collective decisions about how to act in each circumstance which appears before us contribute to the legacy we will leave to our children, grandchildren and their descendants. Each of us can contribute to leaving a better place for those who follow us, or a worse one. The prophet Jeremiah spoke of God as thinking thoughts of peace and not affliction toward us. He invites us to follow God’s example. Are you willing to do your part through the actions of your daily life?

Life Lab Lessons

• What legacy do you want to leave your children?

• What do you have to contribute? • Start by finding peace within yourself. • Find ways to be at peace with others. • Choose love over fear.

What legacy will you leave?

Anemia and aging Aging is accompanied by a number of physical changes.

Some of these changes, such as vision impairment or loss of hearing, are anticipated, while others may arrive unexpectedly.

One condition many adults unexpectedly encounter is anemia. While anemia is common in older adults and its prevalence increases with age, it is not a condition that is widely considered part of the aging process. Anemia is often a symptom of a hidden problem that needs to be addressed promptly.

Anemia is one of the most common blood disorders, affecting more than three million Americans, says the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The American Society of Hematology notes that anemia is characterized by insufficient levels of red blood cells in the blood. Anemia also occurs when red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen to the various organs and tissues throughout the body, are not functioning properly.

Very often the signs of anemia are overlooked or go unnoticed until a blood test determines low hemoglobin (Hb) or hematocrit (HCT) concentrations. Some people discover they have anemia as they attempt to donate blood, at which time their red blood cell count is found to be inadequate. When the body lacks oxygen, any number of the following symptoms may be experienced:

· weakness

· dizziness

· extreme fatigue

· shortness of breath

· fast or irregular heartbeat

· pale or yellow skin

· cold hands or feet

Frequently, existing disorders or conditions, such as congestive heart failure, are made worse by anemia. But unless doctors specifically consider anemia as a possible cause of symptoms, its presence can go undiagnosed.

The American Academy of Family Physicians says the most common causes of anemia among older men and women include chronic diseases and iron deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, gastrointestinal bleeding, and myelodysplastic syndrome are other causes of anemia.

The main way to treat anemia is to discover its source and reverse the outcomes. For instance, a gastrointestinal bleed may need to be repaired. If iron deficiency is the source of the anemia, iron supplements may be prescribed. Many methods to correct anemia involve trial and error and experimentation, especially when the source of the anemia is unknown.

Anemia is a condition that can affect aging adults but does not need to be accepted as a natural consequence of aging. Correct diagnosis and treatment can mitigate symptoms.

Anemia is not usually discovered unless a blood test is ordered. Its symptoms can mimic other conditions.

My wife and I would

like to thank all of the

people in the Bristol,

Bloomfield and

Honeoye area in

finding our dog Mattie.

She is now back home

with us. Many of you

went out on your own

time and looked for

her. We were humbled

by the support and

good wishes people

had for Mattie. She now

wears a GPS device and

is more closely watched

as she should be.

I am a retired ambulance corps volunteer and take issue with the concern about ambulance staff using the ambulance to make food runs. If I used my own personal vehicle to make a food run that could add an additional 10 minutes to a response. If you were having a heart attack, would you want the ambulance there in 6-10 minutes or possibly 20 minutes? When we are picking up food, we are on duty, ready to run out the door if a call comes in. Further, by being out in the community we remind residents that our service is available for their emergency. Exposure i.e. community events, not just in an emergency, has a very positive impact on residents. Next time you see an ambulance crew getting lunch, thank them for their service and tell them to enjoy their meal.

Reading the vent regarding the ambulance being used to pick up food made me angry. First let me point out that that at one time or another ambulance, fire and police use their work vehicles to pick up food when they are on their shift as I have been in restaurants when they have walked in to pick up their order to go. At times they are on 10, 12 or overnight shifts and as long as they stay in the area they are paid to cover I see no problem with them picking up a meal and as a volunteer they give their personal time to serve their community and to suggest that they use their own vehicles to pick up food means you run the risk of our emergency services being without enough people to cover a call which could put people’s lives at risk! Now ask yourself is it worth it?! I think Not!

Typical of today’s society... judge without knowing what you are talking about. I am not on the ambulance but I work closely with them. They do NOT load up and take ambulance to get lunch; they are coming back from taking a call. And remember they are VOLUNTEERING their time and you are begrudging them from stopping to grab food?! I have to wonder... what do you give back???

We would like to

express our most

sincere Gratitude and

Thanks to the Medical

Staff at Highland

Dr. Makiko Ban-Hoefen

Thanks to the man at

How to maintain mental focus - Stay hydrated. A recent

study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that

dehydration caused loss of focus and a sense of fatigue

among women. While the loss of focus was considered

insubstantial and the study only examined women,

remaining hydrated throughout the day may make it easier

to focus on work and other tasks throughout the day.
