From your Cruise Chairman Our trip (or shall I say trip-out) started on Thursday afternoon when the Erin Go Braugh wouldnt pass muster during my sys-

tems check. I wont bore you with the details, but suffice it to say, shes off cruising status for the time being. After two hours of intense stroking and begging, I faced the facts, sucked it up and dialed Ellen. I nearly lost my lunch. Once the Oh-my-Gods, the Youre-kiddings, and the Stop-it-thats-not-funnys (politely speaking) were over, we put Plan B into motion. After chucking the keys into the sea, I headed back up to MDR to give the Seabiscuit the attention she deserved before her first cruise out this sea-son. And, without delay, Ellen and I set about breaking the news to our invited guests. Tina and Dave Smith were still in - big boat or not. Dermott was ever so kind to offer passage and accommodations to Gonzo and Dusty. Ellen called her son Alex who begged off with the too-small-of-a-boat, too-long-of-a-time, too-many-people excuse. He stayed home to make Jello shots. Crossing him off the list left us room for Kimberly once Larry and Darlene found space for Steve and James. Funny enough, by the time Ellen had Kimmer on the line, shed already heard it from Leslie, whod heard it from Karl, whod heard it

from Rex, whod heard it from I dont know, howd you hear Rex? One can only hope that good news will ever travel as fast.

Our crossing was uneventful save for the chilled bottles of champers and Costco croissants. In true PMYC fashion, dinghies were stretched behind our little peanut boat most of Friday afternoon. As the day wore on and the chips and dips disappeared, many of us enjoyed hot links (thanks again, Candy!) and steak a la Larry and salad a la Darlene. Thanks so much you guys! 13 vessels in the PMYC fleet were present to which were added members who sought passage on the Catalina Cruiser. Needless to say, festivities on land Saturday were big fun. Tina, Dave and Ellen decorated our bandstand area and a marvelous meal was prepared by Gonzo and Dusty. The carne was fabulous as always, rice and beans were brilliant, the blender ran non-stop for hours and a good time was had by all. Ladies and gentlemen, may I please introduce the 2006 contest winners: Bob Gonzalez Best Margarita, Nancy Young Best Guaca-mole, and Steve Cordova Farthest Tortilla Tosser. Then, a load of us headed to Dougs / Harbor Reef af-

terward for a bit of dancing and Buffalo Milk. We do make quite the motley crew.

Its always nice to see our on-island friends Al and Karen. A million thanks for allowing us to pile in Sunday morning and BBQ. Youre the best!

If you havent signed up for the Fathers Day Cruise you still have time.

Plans this year include a miniature golf tournament Saturday at 11am at Golf Gardens - 10 Island Plaza ($7 adults / $4 children) and a BBQ Under the Stars at Descanso Beach Club at 5pm.

Bring your own entrée for the grill or buy from their fresh deli.

Happy Birthday to you!

June 10 is the 43rd birthday of the Pacific Mariners Yacht club. But we are asking you, the club members to give the gifts. We are raising funds for the American Disabled Veterans charity. Saturday the 10th of June is casino night again.

Kim LeVern has organized the event again this year so please help us support this very worthwhile cause.

43 sounds pretty young to me, imagine even, if you were born before say 1950. Consider the changes that have happened.

Polio shots, frozen food, zerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the Pill.

Also before credit cards, ball point pens and laser beams, pantyhose, dishwashers, clothes driers, electric blankets, air conditioners and hair conditioners, drip dry clothes and before Star Trek and Armstrong and the moon.

There were no househusbands, gay rights, computer dating, dual careers and computer marriages. No daycare centers, group ther-apy and retirement homes. No FM radio, no tape decks, electric typewriters ( where have all of those gone? ) artificial hearts, word processors, yoghurt and girls with tattoos.

Timesharing meant togetherness, a chip was a small piece of wood, hardware meant household tools, and if you mentioned soft-ware people would think you were soft in the head.

If it was made in Japan it was junk. Making out was how you did in an exam. McDonalds, KFC and instant coffee. Duh!

Cigarettes were fashionable, grass was mowed, coke was a soft drink and pot was something you cooked a missionary in.

Rock music was how Grandma sang you to sleep. Aids were volunteers and gay meant you were happy. Differences between the sexes existed, but a sex change, no way!

So there is a whole bunch of reasons for us to celebrate.

Happy Birthday to you PMYC. Barrie Harnett, Commodore

Didnt write a May article because like Sharky (Sparky), weve been out of the country.

Went on a cruise through the Panama Canal. We left a couple days after I got the cast off my foot. Flew to San Juan, Puerto Rico for 2 days of drinking Mojitos (a Caribbean mint julep), touring

and then boarded the Royal Caribbean ship Serenade of the Seas.

It was Hot!

Went to Aruba, looked for that girl, saw some lizards. --- Hot, hot!

Next stop, Panama Canal. Worth the price of admission. Knew I was getting old, when at the end of the day we were up in the round bar having a vodka and TONIC (malaria ya know, cant be too careful) and my feet and legs were killing me, when it dawned

on us that I had been standing since sunup. --- Hot, hot, hot, hot!

Off to Puntarenas, Costa Rica where we took a trip into the jungle. Lots of ants, some took the time to jump on my arm and bit me. Those little suckers hurt. All and all, we liked Costa Rica and want to go back for a visit. --- Hot, hot, hot!

From Costa Rica, the Captain took the ship 200 miles out to sea so he could make a straight in run to Huatulco, Mexico. Huatuco is on the far side of the Bay of Tehuantepec, where the winds always blow, but this night they were gusting to 60 knots as we went into them at 22 knots. --- Hot, hot!

Cabo San Lucas for eight hours. Thanks to Helene Smiths map and Mary Ellens ability to read it (no one else could) we found this nice hotel for lunch. --- Cold (62 in the AM) then hot!

Last stop San Diego where I had left my car with my son, and home by noon. --- not hot!

I want to thank some guys that have been putting in many hours for the club. Most of you are aware that the Club has been in nego-tiation with Santa Monica Windjammers YC and the County, as to the feasibility of a new clubhouse. To date, the County has put the negotiations on hold.

What most of you are unaware of is the amount of time that these guys have put in on meeting after meeting after meeting. No less then 80 to 100 hours in the last few months. Now thats a lot of free time given to the club. Thanks to Barrie Harnett, Larry Koch and Cort Haverly. Also Kent Andersson and Glenn Boyd for their help.

Hi you all,

just wanted to let you know how small the world is. We were sitting in the Luperon anchorage in the Dominican Republic and ran into this friendly couple at the dock, not realizing that we knew each other. Us too busy tying up the dinghy and them too busy loading provisions into the dinghy. The following day at Steve's restaurant, Steve pointed a couple out to Manuela, that they were from California as well, it was the same couple from the dock. Her and Manuela started chatting and after about 2 minutes it hit us both at the same time. They joined PMYC just after we left and met them briefly in PV during the MdR to PV race through Sue Gee, Sue Janollary and Nancy Dillman. We were in email contact for a couple of years but lost contact and had no idea that they started cruising in 2002. Best yet, they were anchored right next to Paradise. So it was really great to run into Terry and Sandy Vaughn on Von Voyage and had lots to catch up. Unfortunately we're heading into different directions, them north and us south and after only two days they got a good weather window and hoisted sails. We did have a wonderful time with them and are just realizing once more how small the world is. We're hoping that our path will cross again. Hope this finds you all well. Take care and hugs and kisses

You cant winem all

Coming into this years competition, Yes Competition my

wife had every hope and intention of becoming the first Two Peat winner of the margarita contest.

Having placed second two years ago and first last year this set the stage for a PMYC first. No one in recorded history of the Pacific Mariners Yacht Club has won such a coveted

honor and it was on the line this year. If anyone had it in her to pull this off it was Tina. Having spent many months of vigorous training the time had come and victory was sure to be hers. But it was no to be, someone by the name of Gon-zel, Genzo or Gonzo won

We would have blamed ourselves for having a poor strategy but after talking to Bob Ledger he shared with us the mile long wrap sheet this Gonzel guy has.

For example: In 1962 during the first annual tortilla toss it was later discovered that Genzo had substituted a then state

of the art laser guidance system giving him a huge advan-

tage and ultimate win over other members.

Then in the late 70s early 80s he was experimenting with

illegal flavor enhancers and went on to win the first ever Hors Ovaries contest.

Granted we hold no grudges and wish everyone all the bestso all I can say is be ready Tina is preparing for the

Hors Ovaries contest and promises to bring her competitive spirit and good will.

FRIDAY NIGHT DINNERS

Some of you got a chance to taste the Enchilada with Lawry's sauce made especially for the Friday Night Dinner at PMYC. Also made just for the event was my special Strawberry/cream pie with whipped cream. Sorry if you missed out, but it was fun. We also had the Friday night pool tournament. Fun and food was had by all. Special thanks to the House Manager, Bob L. for helping with the clean up. He moved that mop like he was in the Navy. I told him that we would make sure it was clean when I left the club, and it was

So, now it is your turn to do the honors at the Friday Night Dinner. If you have any questions about being the guest chef, I invite you to call and let us review what you need to do. It is a Friday after-noon and evening that you will not soon forget. There are many at the club that will help you, if you want help. So please call and set up your FND date.

SWAP MEET

Tell you friends and neighbors to get out the "junk" that they want to sell because our yearly swap meet will be held on our parking lot on June 3, 2006. If you need a space or have other questions, call early. Last year all spaces were taken within 10 days of going on the market.

Remember to wear your PFD. It only works when you wear it.

Well, youve heard the rumorsits time to make it official.

Gather your friends, your acquaintances, your neighbors, your checkbooks and prepare to tempt fortune at our Casino Night in celebration of the clubs birthday on Saturday, June 10

th. Festivities will begin at 5:30pm with drinks and munchies, followed by some serious gambling at 6:00pm. We will have blackjack tables, roulette (thats where youll find me) and

craps.

This is a charity event benefiting Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

Since its founding more than 80 years ago, the Disabled American Veterans has been dedicated to a single purpose: build-ing better lives for America's disabled veterans and their families. Fidelity to that mission has required DAV to respond creatively and flexibly to changing and sometimes unpredictable problems faced by its more than 1.2 million members. Whether disabled veterans have needed a voice on Capitol Hill, a nationwide service program, a transportation network or unique rehabilitation opportunities, DAV has focused its attention and resources to meet those needs.

DAV provides free assistance to veterans in obtaining benefits and services earned through their military service. It is fully funded through its membership dues and public contributions. It is not a government agency and receives no government funds.

In addition, their National Voluntary Service Program operates an extensive network of programs through which veterans and concerned citizens provide services for their disabled veterans. This includes the Transportation Network, which pro-vides veterans with rides to and from VA medical facilities for treatment, and the Voluntary Service Program, which facili-tates volunteers at VA hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes through the VA Voluntary Service Program.

The cost of admission will be $25 and every paid entrant will receive $500 in funny money. The gambling will end at

10:00pm. At that time, your funny money will be exchanged for raffle tickets. The more funny money you have, the

more raffle tickets you will get and the more chances you will have to win the grand prize of a 2 night stay in Vegas at the Sams Town Resort. If you lose early, as I usually do when in Vegas, you will be able to purchase additional funny

money and try to turn around your losing streak.

We are also looking for some generous souls to sponsor the gambling tables they will be $300 each and you can split the cost with friends if youd like.

We will need volunteers to be blackjack dealers, bartenders, decorators, cooks, etc. If you or someone you know would like to donate items for the raffle or sponsor a table, please contact me. If you cant attend, but would like to make a dona-

tion, please let me know. If you can help in any way, please call me at 310.577.0979 or 310.989.5665.

With your support, we can make this the biggest and most successful PMYC Birthday Party yet!

I look forward to seeing all you lucky people there!

How is it going in Marina Del Rey? All is well here in Nuka Hiva, So far we have been to 5 islands, hiked up to some beautiful waterfalls, Taken 2 car tours one in Hiva oa & one on Nuka Hiva,.

Nuka Hiva is the island Herman Melville was on when he jumped ship & escaped into the jungle & thought he was going to get eaten by canni-bals . he then wrote the book Typee.

& Hiva oa is the island that Gauguin lived on & molested young girls, the one he lived with when he died was 14.

Our ham radio is still broken so we cannot send or receive E Mails, hopefully we will be able to get it fixed or replaced in Tahiti.

I don't know if you have received any other e mails so I may be repeat-ing my self, Our trip from Z-Town to hiva oa took 20 days, we had pretty good weather the first half of the trip, 15 to 20 knots most of the time, then came the inter tropical convergence zone. We had squalls for about 24 hours, at night you can see them coming on the radar. After that we had doldrums for two days until we finally picked up the southern trade winds. We hit one squall about two days out of of Hiva Oa, & ripped our headsail, We are now in the process of ordering anew one, we will then pick it up in Tahiti when we get there. We swam in the middle of the ocean near the equator & are now official shellbacks.

Our next Island group will be the Tuamotus very low lying islands, just a few feet above sea level, sailing there is supposed to be very tricky. We should be heading there in the next week.

Typing & spelling are not one of my strong popints. So sorry for the errors.

I hope all is well with everyone?

Announcing the Fundraising/New Projects Committee!!

Good news for those who like to participate in projects to raise money for PMYC. We now have an official group, the Fundraising/New Projects Committee. We had to add in New Projects to distinguish the activities of this group from those of ongoing PMYC

projects.

The purpose of the group is quite simple and self-explanatory. Our goal is to create new projects, including entertainment, seminars, publications, etc., to raise money for PMYC. I estimate that so far we have raised over $5,000 as a result of events organized by Tony Milazzo. Tony has organized four great parties so far; -- Speakeasy Night, Country Western Night, Blues & Deuces, and Ha-waiian Luau Party. I hope Tony will continue to organize fantastic parties as he finds time between shoots during his new film pro-ject.

The other fundraising project is the PMYC Cookbook by Irv Osser. That project is in progress and we are still collecting recipes. So far we have about 100. We would like to get another 200 to make it a really thick book. If you havent sent in your recipes yet, please send them as soon as possible. Ive been told that it is difficult for some people to comply with the computer format. If thats

the case, you can even handwrite your recipes and mail them to me at PMYC. Irv and I are hoping that the Cookbook will generate about one thousand dollars for the 2006 edition.

There are several additional project ideas currently brewing. One is the idea of starting a PMYC band. We have a number of tal-ented musicians at PMYC. If there is enough interest, we will start our own band. Dave Smith was kind enough to accept responsi-bility for organizing the band. Please contact him directly at 805-479-0785 (cell) or email him at [email protected] if you can participate. My only hope is that once the band gets going, they will at least let me play the tambourine!

The second idea is that Michelle Summers will organize a one-hour video course on First Aid. She will organize the seminar and then tape and edit it for future use. It will be great for PMYC to have fundraising projects that promote boating safety. The final products (tape and CD) will be displayed on the PMYC website and be available for purchase, Mr. Roger Daugherty willing. Mi-chelle is interested in producing other videos as well based on future seminars such as provisioning and man overboard drills.

The third idea is a dance party to be organized by Deborah Pitt in July. She knows a great band and will try to book them after we set up a specific date.

Last but not least, Bob Leger would like to get some Pay-Per-View events going. He says there are exciting boxing matches coming up on cable. If you would like to be in charge, please contact Bob or me for details.

I have been asked how the funds raised by these projects will be used. Frankly, it has not yet been decided. For the moment we are just saving them. Some of the funds are in trust with the Treasurer, others with the House Manager. Eventually, they will be com-bined and have a permanent home. I will work on this in July after I get back from my vacation.

My general feeling is that people who organize the projects, volunteer toward their success, or support the projects by attending or purchasing tickets should have a say in determining how the funds should be used. Of course, the wishes of the person who organ-izes the event should always be considered first. For the moment, the greatest need may be developing a reserve to cover moving and remodeling expenses. I am interested in hearing from all PMYC members regarding this matter.

Finally, I would like to thank the PMYC Board and each PMYC member who participated in past projects for helping us raise money. PMYC is a self-run organization and we all should be involved in its success in one way or another. Hopefully we will have some fun along the way as well.

Liz Fox, Chair, Fundraising/New Projects
