    Who is it for?

    The New Zealand Diploma of Business is for those wishing to study flexiblyonline to gain a nationally recognised qualification that gives a practicalintroduction to the fundamentals of small business, marketing, management andother business skills. It can be studied as whole qualification or as single paperswhich correspond to your particular skill needs. Please be aware there will be acompulsory on campus (Nelson and Blenheim) mid-semester and end of

    semester final exam; times and dates to be confirmed by the School of Business.

    How it works

    There are no classes to attend; your course is available to you 24/7. The materialis available online so all you need is a computer and access to the Internet(broadband preferable) and is supported by an orientation. Study on your termswhere and when you like! Some courses offer workshops which are notcompulsory but highly recommended. There may be required attendance at finalexams. It is important to note the attendance requirements for your particularcourse in your course outline.

    How long will it take?

    The New Zealand Diploma in Business delivered by NMIT is a 12 coursequalification. As a full time student studying 3 papers a semester thequalification will take 2 years to complete. A part time student can study at hisor her own pace tailoring their own study plan.

    Fees & Costs

    The New Zealand Diploma of Business (Level 6) tuition fee per course is $499including GST. Additionally Student Association Fees of approximately $19.70applies for each course.

    SANITI

    In 2002, students at NMIT voted in a referendum for a compulsory StudentsAssociation, known as SANITI (Student Association of Nelson-MarlboroughInstitute of Technology Incorporated).

    Entry Requirements

    To be accepted for the NZ Diploma in Business programme, an applicant musthave obtained at least the standard of the following:

    Applicants under 20 years old:

    Academic Requirements

    a minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level one or higher in Mathematics or

    Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework

    fifty credits at level two or above with at least 12 credits in each of three

    subjects including a minimum of eight literacy credits at level two or higher in

    English or te reo Mori; four credits must be in reading and four credits must

    be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from aschedule of approved

    achievement standards and unit standards

    or equivalent to both the above

    Applicants 20 years of age or over

    There are no minimum academic requirements

    All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this

    level.

    English Language Requirements

    Those applicants whose first language is not English should have:

    An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overallAcademic score of at least 6.0 issued within the last two years, with

    not less than 5.5 in any category.

    or

    A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least213 in the computer-based test, or at least 550 in the paper-based test,

    As a national qualification, the NZ Diploma in Business qualification istransportable all over New Zealand. You can start your qualification with NMITand finish it at any number of tertiary institutes.

    It is also a highly flexible and can be completed as a whole qualification or singleor groups of courses can be chosen for specific areas of interest. Furthermore,both on-line and face to face modes of study are offered for most courses.

    By following a prescribed pathway it is also a recognised pathway to anAccounting Technician qualification.

    The online courses are designed for students who are unable to attend lectures. .As classes utilise online learning systems, the suggested minimum computerrequirements are:

    A reliable computer with up-to-date software An internet connection (preferably broadband) Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel and Access (Office 2002or more recent). Check special computer requirements for each course in courseoutlines.

    Entry into a course is subject to entry requirements including pre-requisitesbeing met. The course descriptor for each course includes the entryrequirements for that course including pre requisites.

    A pre-requisite is a course which normally must be passed, credited or exemptedbefore a person may enrol in a specified course.

    Forms of Assessment

    Depending on the courses chosen, assessments can include tests, final exams,

    essays, assignments, written coursework, reports, research projects, controlledassignments, portfolios, simulations, case studies, literature reviews, groupassessments, tutorial papers or project management. These assessments aremost commonly submitted online. It is important to check attendancerequirements for each specific course, see page 7 Courses Offered Semester 22010.

    Recognition of Academic Credit

    Students may apply to have relevant experience or qualifications recognised as

    academic credit for courses within this programme. Methods of recognitioninclude Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Cross-Credit.

    Applications for recognition of academic credit should be made through theOnline Programme Coordinator. No fees apply to cross credits but an RPL fee ischarged for each course. Please contact the School of Business and ComputerTechnology for further information.

    Recognition of Prior Learning

    Recognition of Prior Learning is the application of credit towards a qualificationawarded following formal appraisal of prior learning in respect of learningarising from life experience, work experience, informal and/or formal educationor training.

    Cross Credit

    Cross-Credit is the application of academic credit of a course towards an NMITqualification, of a course already completed as part of another approvedqualification that covers the same learning outcomes as the NMIT course and isat the same academic level. Courses that are run face to face and can be crosscredited in this manner.

    Students may receive up to ten cross credits from the following list towards a

    completed NZ Diploma in Business from the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor

    of Information Technology. Cross-credits available from these programmes can

    Can I study this programme part time?

    The New Zealand Diploma in Business can be completed by doing as little as 1 or2 courses each semester.

    Can I study just the papers I am interested in without completing the

    qualification?

    Yes, courses can be done separately. You can choose courses that are relevant toyour own development without having to complete the qualification.

    What happens if I am sick or unable to do an exam or complete an

    assignment?You must apply for an extension for assignments from the tutor otherwisesignificant penalties apply. If you are unable to complete an assignment or examyou can apply for an aegrotat pass for up to 60% of a courses total assessment or

    When do the fees have to be paid?

    Your enrolment fees have to be paid before the start date of the course.

    Do I have to attend workshops?

    Workshops are not compulsory but are strongly recommended. In many casesthe workshop can be revision for a test which is sat in the afternoon.

    Will there be an orientation?

    Yes, at the orientation you will be introduced to the software and structure of thecourses as well as meeting your tutor and fellow students. You can either do thisface to face on campus or online. This will give you a good kick start to thecourse.

    How much time do I get to complete a course?

    Courses have a start date and an end date. There is a schedule which indicateswhen certain points in the course should have been reached and otherassessments submitted.

    Who should I contact if I have a problem with my course? You must see your course tutor in the first instance. If the issue is not resolved

    What if I change my mind about studying or want to change to another

    programme?

    You can withdraw from a course within 3 weeks of commencement and receive afull refund. After this time, but before 60% of a course is completed, you canwithdraw without refund and the course will not appear on your academicrecord as a fail. You can not withdraw after 60% of the course has beencompleted. There is an administration fee of $100.00.

    Can I get credits towards a course if I have studied it at another institution? You can get credits for NZDipBus courses completed at other approved andaccredited NZDipBus providers. You can also apply for cross credits for wholecourses where you have previously completed an equivalent course underanother programme e.g. Bachelor of Commerce., covering at least 80% of thelearning outcomes at the same level at NMIT or another approved provider.Contact School of Business and Computer Technology Administration forapplications.

    Can I get credits towards a course if I have done it as part of a job?

    We encourage applications for recognition of prior learning for whole courseswhere you can clearly demonstrate or provide independent confirmation that

    you have work or life experience covering at least 80% of the learning outcomesfor a course. Contact School of Business and Computer TechnologyAdministration for applications. There is a fee of $200.00 per course.

    Can I get a student loan or allowance?

    NZ students studying the equivalent of 80% or more fulltime on an NMITprogramme usually qualify for a student loan. Usually this is three DipBuscourses per semester. Entitlement to allowances depends on your personalcircumstances. You should discuss your entitlement directly with Studylink.

    Who do I see if I need more information about a course or programme? You should see Linda or Marina at the School of Business and ComputerTechnology Reception in the first instance. If they are unable to answer yourquery they will make an appointment for you to see the Online ProgrammeCoordinator.

    Students attending a full time programme of 12 weeks or more and who are 18years or over can test their eligibility for Student Allowance. Some 16 or 17 yearolds may also qualify but there are certain conditions they must meet.

    This is a government loan which you repay through Inland Revenue when youstart working. The amount you can borrow includes: course fees, living costs,courses resources and loan administration fee.

    Subject / Information Requests

    This may be done by phone, email or fax, or by completing the InformationRequest form on the LLC web page, under Ask Us

    Make sure that you have read the assignment carefully and are clear about theinformation that you need. Think about the format of material, how recent itneeds to be, as well as the type of information you want. Tell us who you are(include your student ID no.) and where you want material sent.

    Allow 2-3 days for the delivery of material. We will send your requested itemswithin 1 working day, and process subject requests within 3 working days.

    Use the catalogue to find out what is available in the LLC. It will tell you what wehave, where the item is, its classification number (how to find it on the shelf) andwhether the item is on loan. It also includes online resources.You can limit your search to:

    The Catalogue and web pages

    Material held at a specific branch

    Format of material (eg book, video etc) Date of publication/ author/ title etc.

    The catalogue can be accessed via the LLC web page, from anywhere you have aninternet connection.

    From the LLC website you can access Online Resources to find a range ofresearch databases. These provide access to journal and newspaper articles(many in full-text), online encyclopaedias and other research information in arange of subject areas. Tip sheets are available online for most of theseresources. Contact us if you need further assistance with them.

    When you are off-campus you will need to use your library log-in to access theseresources.

    The LLC web pages also include information about the LLC, recommended websites and Subject Guides which provide information about accessing and usinginformation resources in your subject area.

    Withdrawals and Refunds

    Enrolled students should contact their school administrator immediately if theyare planning to withdraw onto another programme or course.

    Withdrawals

    To withdraw from a course or programme, you will need to complete and sign aWithdrawal Application form and return it to the School Administration officefor consideration.

    In all cases the date of withdrawal from a course will be the date the WithdrawalApplication form is received by the School Administration office.

    You must notify StudyLink if you are receiving a Student Loan or studentAllowance.

    Refunds

    A refund of course fees will only be considered if a Withdrawal / RefundApplication form has been completed, signed and submitted no later than threeweeks after the start of the course.

    An administration fee may be withheld from the amount of any refund.
