Comprehensive Course Catalog

• New York State’s comprehensive course code catalog will be adopted from the NCES SCED identifiers.

• SED intends to make a “quick reference guide” subset available to assist in reporting.

• LEAs would not be required to adopt the State codes, but they will have to map to the codes for reporting purposes in the 2011-12 school year.

Many States Have Already Adopted NCES SCED Codes

• In a recent survey, only 8 states said they did not plan to adopt NCES course codes

• Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, and more are among early adopters

We know they are crazy, now how do we deal with it?

NCES SCED

Since state codes were based on NCES SCED course codes, where can I see the NCES SCED documents?

The NCES SCED for secondary can be found here:http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2007341

The NCES SCED for prior-to-secondary can be found here: http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2011801

Secondary vs. Prior-to-Secondary ?

• Generally, secondary courses will earn high school credits

• Review the introductions and information about the NCES coding structure

Tips and suggestions

Page 20: NYSED Comprehensive Course Catalog TO ALL RICs and BIG 5: It’s time to start mapping!

• IMPORTANT: Remember that in addition to state course codes local course codes and local titles will be collected and used in reporting. Schools do not have to adopt state codes….merely map to them

• FIRST: Map ‘courses ending in state exams’ to required state course codes (no options)

Tips and suggestions

Tips and suggestions

• Be positive• Share the May 2011 memo• Schools should focus (limit craziness)• Download both the Secondary and Prior-

to-Secondary SCED• Have print copies of both the Secondary

and Prior-to-Secondary SCED• Do your best – perfection is not possible,

but excellence is

Page 22: NYSED Comprehensive Course Catalog TO ALL RICs and BIG 5: It’s time to start mapping!

minute• Refer to official NYSED web pages• Email questions, feedback, and

suggestions• Hold new course code suggestions until

next year
