First Term Board Member Biographies A Letter from Jo Ann Golden, CPA | Board Chair

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, I am pleased to present to you NYCON’s 2018-2019 Annual Report.

Approaching the end of my first year as Board Chair, I reflect on NYCON’s accomplishments in the nonprofit (and broader) community during this tumultuous time. As a catalyst for innovation and impact, NYCON continues to lead the charge in strengthening the nonprofit sector, helping its members serve their own constituents more effectively, supported by NYCON’s myriad of services.

The past year was an exciting period of growth as we move toward a service model that is in tune with, and reflective of, rapidly changing times. Through our integrated Family of Services, including Governance Matters, Council Services Plus and Innovative Charitable Initiatives, we have strengthened our offerings:

• New, easier to navigate websites have been launched for NYCON, Council Services Plus and Innovative Charitable Initiatives, with links to all of our Family members. Improvements have been made to the existing Governance Matters website as well.

• NYCON and Governance Matters have partnered with the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) as the exclusive New York State provider of an online self-assessment tool designed to evaluate and improve diversity, equity, and inclusion practices for staff leaders and boards.

• NYCON has engaged in 14 different merger/acquisition/affiliation projects over the past year, helping to preserve jobs and services for nonprofits in crisis.

• Governance Matters’ New York State board matching website, charitySTRONG.org, continues to grow and enhance board member/agency matching. Continued improvements to the platform are underway.

• NYCON continues to provide dynamic, effective capacity building services to nonprofits at a time when organizations are fighting for relevancy in a changing world. These services are often made possible through powerful partnerships with funders across the state.

• NYCON remains a voice for the nonprofit community, successfully championing a NYS law protecting nonprofit nonpartisanship (currently on the Governor’s desk) and other influential legislative efforts.

• These are just a few highlights that underscore the positive impact the NYCON family has on the New York State nonprofit sector.

NYCON is led by a committed Board of Directors representing all regions of New York State, bringing a diverse range of knowledge and strategic direction to the table. In addition, a network of dedicated volunteers serve on the Boards and Advisory Committees of NYCON’s family affiliates. As chair, I can say my role has been enriched by the involvement of these talented, hardworking individuals.

The important daily provision of services and guidance to NYCON’s ~3,000 members is executed by our committed staff, led by CEO, Doug Sauer. Delivering relevant services in today’s complicated nonprofit environment is challenging task, but staff regularly go above and beyond to assist our members, recognizing the value of their collective impact.

All this would not be possible without our members, funders, donors, and corporate partners. We humbly thank you all for your dedication and commitment to the nonprofit community in New York State and beyond.
