The Tax Law Section’s main purpose is to further the knowledge of the members of the section in the law of federal, state and local taxation; to assist, when called upon by the State Bar of Nevada’s Board of Governors in the formulation, administration and implementation of programs, forums and other activities for the education of members of the state bar in the law of federal, state and local taxation; to act upon all matters germane to its purposes as so described to referred to it by the Board of Governors; and to make recommendations to the Board of Governors. Our membership is composed of diverse practitioners, including solo practitioners and attorneys employed by small firms, as well as large multi-state firms and government attorneys. The membership is diverse because our attorneys deal with both federal and state tax law, including, but not limited to, the following areas of practice: personal taxation, corporate tax, partnership tax, estate and gift tax, international tax, transactions involving tax planning and structuring, and tax resolution, including representation before the U.S. Tax Court. How do you join the Tax Law Section? This request is pending while the Board of Governors conducts a general review of the accreditation processes utilized by all sections and the oversight thereof; however, the Tax Law Section remains committed to pursuing this project. The Tax Law Section also holds CLEs on various tax- related topics for all State Bar members. Last month, the Tax Law Section held a popular CLE on COVID-19 and Tax Relief for Individuals and Corporations Under the CARES Act that was presented by Professor Francine Lipman, William S. Boyd Professor of Law, at UNLV's William S. Boyd School of Law. What are the Tax Law Section’s goals for 2020? Next year? Five years? The Tax Law Section’s goals are to increase its membership, both in the short term and over the next several years, and to collaborate with other sections in an effort to continue to expand the knowledge of our members, whether through sponsorship of joint CLEs or mixed social events. The Tax Law Section’s diverse membership and specialized practice area positions its members well to support and work with other specialized practitioners, whether they are members of the Business Law Section, the Probate and Trust Law Section or other sections where the direct connection to tax law may be less apparent (e.g., the Real Property and Family Law sections). Who holds leadership positions within the Tax Law Section? Krisanne Cunningham, chair – Cunningham’s broad transactional experience spans 20 years and includes mergers and acquisitions, tax planning, business law, corporate governance, securities and tax-exempt non-profit organizations. Cunningham regularly negotiates and manages sophisticated middle-market M&A transactions and advises on structuring those transactions in a tax-efficient manner. Cunningham also advises boards on governance issues and has significant experience with Nevada LLCs and joint ventures, including partnership taxation. She also works with entrepreneurs and start-up companies, from the time they begin to raise capital and grant incentive equity compensation through the point of an eventual sale. Andrew Glendon, vice-chair – Glendon has maintained a transactional and business law practice in Las Vegas for 20 years. What is the Tax Law Section’s main purpose or mission?

Andrea Nichols, treasurer – Nichols has been a practicing attorney for more than 20 years. She has worked for the Office of the Nevada Attorney General since 2001 representing a variety of state agencies, officers and employees in the state and federal district courts of Nevada as well as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Nichols has been assigned to the Business and Taxation Division since 2012.
