Gain real-world insights from other family business owners.Since 1989, the Goering Center for Family and Private Business has brought tri-state family businesses together in a collaborative forum designed to enlighten, strengthen and prolong family business success.

As a safe haven where family businesses can share their unique issues, the Goering Center has evolved into a “who’s who” of family

business owners who enjoy sharing their stories and learning from one another.

While some member businesses are recognized, many are not that well known. The common thread among Goering Center members is private ownership. Every type and size of family and private business is welcome to join.

Three Membership Classifications assure a diverse and rewarding learning and networking opportunity.

Core MembersAll family and private businesses that are effectively controlled by a family, families or an individual make up our core membership. These companies aspire to grow and thrive in an ever changing economy. The Goering Center supports their growth through excellence in education and training.

Associate MembersWhile many companies and firms are not “family” owned, they have an active interest in the challenges and needs of family-owned and privately held businesses. They are often advisors to Core members or provide products and services to Core members.

Corporate PartnersThis is a special category for key supporters of the Goering Center. Our corporate partners sponsor and underwrite various member programs.

Optimize your family business

and foster a legacy that endures.

It’s the family relationships that

often stifle family businesses.

As a family business owner or leader, you may feel uncertain that anyone is ready to fill your shoes, or pressured to step aside before a smooth transition seems possible.

At the same time, your next generation may feel anxious, underprepared or concerned about taking the lead without hurting the business or straining family relations.

Given the sensitivity of governance and succession discussions, many family businesses are unable to address these issues objectively, successfully, or at all – often minimizing growth opportunities and thwarting the chances for a successful evolution.

By acknowledging and addressing the concerns of present-day Generation 1 (G1) ownership, and the grooming needed for a successful handoff to Generation 2 (G2), the Goering Center is able to open and facilitate meaningful discussions that can make a difference.

If your goal is to prepare your family business for an optimal transition, the Goering Center programs will help open conversations in a neutral setting, so you and your successors can work toward aligning your vision for success.

The sooner you begin preparing, the fewer problems and surprises you’ll experience down the road.

By joining the Goering Center, you can prepare your family

business to succeed for generations to come.

In addition, three Institutes exist within the Goering Center and focus on helping family busi-nesses maximize their potential for success:

Strategic Business Planning Institute (SBPI) Through this three-session program, your leadership team will take away an

implementable plan on a few pages, not a two-inch binder. Critical areas covered are clarity of future direction, the key priorities that matter most and metrics to track your progress.

Leadership Development Institute (LDI)Just because someone assumes a leadership role in a family business doesn’t

mean they know how to lead. This program will help develop your own leadership skills, as well as your team’s, to maximize your effectiveness and optimize the performance of your organization.

Next Generation Institute (NGI)This highly interactive, eight-session forum helps current and successive

generations in a family business learn invaluable lessons on how to successfully transition roles and ownership over time.

At regularly scheduled programs, you will learn from the experiences of other family businesses and gain practical advice on how they deal with the challenges you face. For example:

Executive Luncheons With surprising candor, local family business CEOs, senior managers and advisory

boards share advice on how they run their family businesses, plus other timely topics. All members are welcome.

Core Member Breakfasts Only Core members can attend these exclusive breakfasts, to assure the unbiased

nature of the information that’s shared.

Half-Day Educational Forums Subject-matter experts speak about estate planning, wealth transfer, strategic

planning, family councils, effective family communications, and other key success factors.

Executive Roundtables 8-10 members meet in an atmosphere of confidentiality, trust and openness to share in

each other’s business, family and personal experiences.

Family Business of the Year Awards Each August, tri-state firms that exemplify the best practices of family business are

honored by the Goering Center. All members and the public are encouraged to attend.

Many members have already faced leadership and transition challenges. Others are just beginning to recognize the need for advice. Either way, a Goering Center membership provides access to a variety of family business leaders willing to collaborate, as well as focused educational programs designed to enlighten.

Page 6: nurtured, educated & challenged...your family business and foster a legacy that endures. It’s the family relationships that often stifle family businesses. As a family business owner

As family-owned businesses pass ownership from one generation to the next, strategic planning is critically important. It helps align family ownership with management, and defines the core family values and survival vision for the business. These become the foundation for performance goals that unify the family with its short and long term business objectives.

Strategic Business Planning Institute (SBPI)Focus your business and define your competitive advantage

Strategic Planning is the number one job of top management, and the number one tool of business success.

By the end of this 3-day curriculum, your team will have co-created three documents that define clarity of future direction, the key priorities that matter most and metrics to track your progress.

Prior to beginning the SBPI program, you will have a private meeting with your curriculum leaders to define “who and where” your business is today.

Then, in concurrent sessions that build upon previous session topics, you will develop the tools necessary to craft, execute and evaluate your own business plans.

SBPI sessions are designed exclusively for Goering Center family businesses and curriculum leaders are experts in business execution processes, sales strategy, innovation and performance.

Leadership Development Institute (LDI)Identify and Develop Those Best Suited to Leading the Way

As a family business leader, your performance has a direct impact on your company’s bottom line. You can inspire new levels of achievement, or take your organization nowhere fast.

The Leadership Development Institute (LDI), designed exclusively for the Goering Center by Leadership Excelleration, Inc., will help address the unique challenges faced by those leading, and those who will be leading your family business, so you can maximize the performance of your organization.

Through interactive workshops, on site Goering Center member visits and practical application, you’ll gain greater self-awareness and learn how to create an environment where people want to do their best. A partial list of topics to be covered includes:

The Next Generation Institute (NGI)Prepares the Current Owners (G1) and Potential Successors (G2), for a Positive Transition

This highly interactive, eight-session forum helps current and successive generations of family business ownership learn invaluable lessons on how to successfully transition their roles.

Side-by-side, with the support of expert facilitators, multiple members of each generation can share and learn:

How to create a mutual vision for your family business

The 8 steps of a seamless transition to new leadership and/or ownership

How a network of advisors and peers in other family firms can be essential

How an outside board of advisors or directors can be invaluable

Ways to value your business and finance the ownership transaction

How to optimize the legal and tax issues that affect transition

Strategies and techniques to build trust with family, employees, and customers

The emotional aspects of transition, and how to prepare for them

Next Generation Institute sessions are conducted by business experts who have worked with local family firms that have addressed these issues.

Many sessions include local family-business owners who have successfully completed a generational transition. Facilitators divide members into roundtables and help each participant make the program content especially relevant to their family business.
