TRANSFORM provides insight on issues at the heart of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis and its vision to advance health and ignite leadership through innovative education, transformative research and bold system change.

Building a Multiprofessional, Multidisciplinary Culture

For 100 years, UC Davis has engaged in teaching, research and public service that matters to California and beyond. The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis was established in March 2009, UC Davis’ first major initiative of its second century of service, addressing society’s most press-ing health-care problems. The school was launched through a $100 million commit-ment from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the nation’s largest grant for nursing education.

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing advances health and ignites leadership through innovative educa-tion, transformative research and bold system change. The Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Graduate Group furthers this vision through interdis-ciplinary and interprofessional education including faculty from across the UC Davis campus.

Pending approvals, the school will accept its first class for the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degree programs in fall 2010. Additional students and programs will be phased in over the coming years.

Graduates will serve as educators, researchers and leaders who promote health, advance quality of care and safety, and shape policy. Graduates of the doctoral program will fill university-level nurse faculty positions and leadership, research and advanced practice roles. Master’s degree program graduates will be prepared to be faculty at the community college level and to assume leadership roles in health systems and programs.

Housed by the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, the degrees will be conferred by the Nursing Science

and Health-Care Leadership Graduate Group. As the 48th graduate group at UC Davis, the Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership curriculum includes a wide cross-section of academic disciplines that will advance quality and transformation in health care. The Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Graduate Group will cultivate academic excellence through immersive, interprofessional and interdisciplinary education and research in partnership with the communities it serves.

the Graduate Group tradition

Graduate Groups embody the collaborative spirit at UC Davis by bringing together faculty from depart-ments across campus that share common research interests that span academic disciplines. The graduate group concept, one that is unique to UC Davis, has established a culture of interaction across departmen-tal boundaries and has helped to shape the distinctive character of the university.

The extensive use of graduate groups as a vehicle for administering academic programs has expanded the scope and strengthened the quality of graduate educa-tion at UC Davis. More graduate groups are offered at UC Davis today than at any other university in the United States. UC Davis graduate groups and programs

nursinG is collaborative in its art and science and this is reflected in the Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Graduate Group. In today’s health-care en-vironment, the ability to lead teams – including nurses, physicians, social workers, pharmacists and others – is critical to initiating and implementing changes that can save lives and advance health. With the recognition that health-care professionals must work seamlessly as a team, the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing is dedi-cated to system-level interprofessional and interdisci-plinary education. The complex problems in health and health care today require interdisciplinary approaches to discover and implement transformative solutions. Nursing graduate students will benefit from the rich interdisciplinary learning environment afforded by the graduate group.

The school also emphasizes leadership development, transformative research, cultural inclusiveness and the use of innovative technology. Research and education emphasize healthy systems and healthy people.

With the vision of improving health-care systems and designing policies to be effective, efficient and respon-sive, research in healthy systems includes health policy, organizational change, informatics, implementation science and leadership. Faculty, postdoctoral fellows and students discover and share knowledge to analyze, shape, redesign and evaluate health systems.

Research for healthy people includes community health, public health, epidemiology, gerontology, rural health and health disparities to promote health for individuals, families and populations in partnership with communi-ties and with an emphasis on aging, rural and diverse populations. The graduate group will discover and

share knowledge on the priories and needs of popula-tion subgroups as well as tailor and test approaches to advance health in these groups.

Faculty representinG a wide array of disciplines are already committed members of the Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Graduate Group and will be led by professor paul FitzGerald, acting chair of Cell Bi-ology and Human Anatomy in the School of Medicine.

In addition to faculty from the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, members of the graduate group in-clude faculty from the fields of Family and Community Medicine, Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Public Health Sciences, Nutrition, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Home Health Services, Sociology, Pediatrics, Hematology and Oncology, Plant Sciences, Cultural Studies, Health In-formatics, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biostatistics Graduate Group, Genome Center and Bioinformatics Program, the Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care, the Outreach Research and Education Program at the Cancer Center, the UC San Francisco School of Pharmacy and the Sacramento Experimental Pharmacy Program at UC Davis.
