tOOD SHOWThe Redlands (Calif.) YMCA was for the 39th 'year, the scene of a gala circus celebration onMay 13, 14, 15, 20 and 21st. The show playedto straw houses, with a turnaway at the finalperformance. It is a community project that in-volved almost as many performers as people inthe audience. In a program of 23 displays that ran for threehours, the artists made up for in enthusiasmwhat they lacked in artistry and talent. Everyact received an ovation. It was a happy and en-joyable occasion for all concerned.

Everyone in the community who wishes to takepart does so. No one is billed as a star, but asin any group of 75 to 100 performers there area half dozen with genuine artistic talent. Theunknowing risks taken with various aerial rig-gings would make any pro quail. They are inneed of some real and seasoned advice. Thesingle trapeze display is an example of where

angels would fear to tread because of the pre-carious way in which they are made and rigged. However, a couple of the girls involved aret ru ly outstanding; six girls simultaneously whileswinging to the rafters, do well executed for-ward roll ing, half-twisting, free, one hock catch-es. Good stuff! The perch display with three 20' perches, wasalso worth seeing. Two young girls do a twohigh atop a double shoulder perch. There wereseveral roughly executed good tricks, hand-stands, etc.The high spot of the evening was the bicycleand unicycle performers. Four small boys, about 12 years of age, were exceptionally goodand with the rough edges honed off could makeit with little competition from England's andRingling's, Barry Lappy. With the help of just one paid expert Redlandsand the Great Y Circus would benefit. Eventhough it is their 39th year too much seems sto be left to trial and error. But with just plainfun and community enjoyment as a yardstickthis show is a huge success. ^ g

BILLY BARTON-IN MY CAPSULE REVIEW of the Beatty-Cole Circusin last week's column, I overlooked one of the pro-gram's feature highlights - FRED LOGAN with threerings of elephants and the eye-opening "walking longmount." Forgive the oversight, Freddie, caused by notpaying attention to my notes.

GIL MILLER, now booking acts for Ringling's ThrillCircus at the Columbus (Ohio) Fair (Aug. 22-28), hasset the following: Elephant acts: Walt King, Cristiani, .Murray Hill, Tony Diano; Thrill acts: Nerveless Nocks,Swaying Stars, Sensational Bruno, Hans Winn Troupe,Karl and Sheila Winn (twin aerial motorcycles); Hugoand Edmundo Zacchini, twin cannon acts; Karl Wai-lenda. The Jordanas, Michele & Michael, helicopteraerial perch; Geronimo and cage acts: Barrada's wildanimals and Albert Rix's bears. Plus the ReynosaBros, in their Pirates of the Sky act.

So many of our gals are hooked on Soap Operas Isuffered thru the Daytime Emmy Awards to bringthem the results: Winner: ABC's RYANS HOPE inALL categories: drama, male and female best actorand actress; best director and writers... whichwill please some, have others gnashing their teeth!

SNAPSHOTS: VIOLA McLEOD, long-time Polackstaffer, is now in retirement, the Chicago office closed."It's not what I'm looking forward to," confides OurGal Friday, "but at the moment I have no otherchoice'" MARY JO COULSsendsa message to methat "NO!" she will not go back on the road. Aw,C'mon, Mary Jo, we miss ya! Since the injury to hiscatcher BARRY MILLER, now with Hunt's Circusreveals he may abandon the cradle act, concentrateinstead on son NORMAN's aerial number to which anupside down loop walk may be added The FLYINGVALENTINES are not playing the Dobritch Wheatondate as reported earlier, but rumor has it they may beat the Louisville fair date tor Emmett Kelly, Jr...RU-MORS I DO NOT BELIEVE: that HERTA CUNEOwill sideline her excellent bear act in '78. For heaven'ssake, whyl?....Another dazzling light has been extin-guished in the marquee of Hol lywood's golden erawith the sudden death of film great JOAN CRAW-F O R D who succumbed to a heart attack on May 10.

FRAGMENTS: JIM SWAFFORD chauffeured CLIFFV A R G A S to see CUNEO's sensational new white ti-ger group being trained by JEAN M I C H O N . Jim hasbeen a constant visitor to the Vargas lots in SouthernCalifornia, reports business was very good at all spots

except Ventura ED DRAKE, Sr., will supervise theVargas elephant herd now that WALLY ROSS is per-manently at Thousand Oaks. His son, ED DRAKE,Jr., has a very unusual mixed group of animals, seenon Polack and Circus Carol recently....SAM T. PO-LACK is no longer associated with the new PolackBros., is building up his own route which is increasingeach season. We wish him well....GEORGE HUBLER

I reports a crackerjack season thus far, one of his best, and says the FLYING ESPANOLES, a new Mexicanact features very young performers with flashy style...

He used the act on most of his dates. Gil Miller, PeggyMills and George were instrumental in bringing theact to this country, a complicated procedure due tonew and very stringent immigration laws....LILLI ANAand her leopards and DIANO's elephants are two actsnamed for his Firemen's Circus at Cincinnati in July,(under a HAROLD BARNES big top).

NEWS BITS: (from Sells & Gray): ODILE, stunt wo-man in French movies, sister of MARIE FRANCE, ison the show doing web and working SAMPION's highschool horse. Her arrival was delayed when someonein France mis-spelled just ONE letter of her name onher passport! New acts on the show are MOISES,wire; M A R L E N E , head balancing; MIMI ZERBI IMI ,trapeze, plus a pony drill unveiled by EVY KAROLYand MICHAEL a young clown from the RinglingClown school. Now that Bob and Kay PARKER arefurnishing'"live" music (which the show needed),BILLY EARL has blossomed into a "singing ringmas-ter" and wife, BONNIE, warbles for the aerial ballet.QUICKIES: VASHEK's wife, KATHY, spells hername with a "K" not a "C". I kept correcting my er-ror, editor DON, thinking I was making a mistakechanged the K back to a C. Kathy, I think we're syn-chronized now!....Don reports the shows hit his areaall at the same time, making it impossible for him tospend more than a few hours on each and still get thepaper out!. Between hither and thithering he managesto M.C. local area events The ten day date recentlyplayed by Beatty-Cole at the Liberty Bell raceway inPhilly is the final Shrine date of the season, remainderof the tour is at shopping centers....We understandNANCY G I O R D A N O ' S condition is improving...TheWALT KINGs are enjoying their new home in theDetroit area That new, double wide flying act stag-ed by the PALACIOS is a double-barreled winner....The DYMEKS, pole voltiage, will be with Circus Var-

Show ReportThe Hagan Wallace-Sells & Gray Circus playedseveral times here in Central Pennsylvania — inLebanon on May 19 and Carlisle May 24. Theshow has'a Tine array of talent that presents apleasing performance for its audiences. The show is a little short-handed on workers -"roustabouts" so I and several local folks allpitched in to set up the big top. We all learned

Iwould like to thank them for putting up withme and the many circus fans they encountereach day. Museum PlansThe Florida State Fair grounds at Tampa maybecome the site of a carnival museum if thedetails can be worked out. The Minneapolis-based Outdoor Amusement Business Assoc., atrade organization serving the North Americacarnival industry, has already approved theproposed plans.

The state fair authorities are reportedly con-sidering the proposal, but have not made anyfirm offers. A spokesman says "they came tous" and "there are still unanswered questions"

The Outdoor Amusement Business Assoc.,would like to see a first class, year-round tour-ist attraction developed. Plans call for the re-storation of a considerable amount of antiquecarnival equipment, which will be availableonce the plans are set. It is also hoped that ahall of fame for "notable camies" can be es-tablished which will feature Buffalo Bill Cody, the first president of the Showman's Leagueof America.

R. K. Larson, executive secretary to the Out-door Amusement Business Assoc., says, "Aseparate foundation is envisioned for owner-ship of the museum. It will have to be self-sustaining and whatever we do we want to doit right." 'It must, he added, "be a complimen-tary venture with the state fair.

Larson says his organization's board feels thata substantial amount of money could be ob-tained from carnival people to finance theproject. He said the next step is a feasibilitystudy, expected to be completed sometimenext fall in time for a concrete presentationto the association's next full board meetingin New Orleans, in November.

After studying the project, says Larson, "wemay find it isn't as great as we think it is andwe may drop it. But there is a lot of enthus-iasm in the industry for a museum and be-cause the Tampa Bay Area is the winter homeof thousands of carnival people, they like thestate fair grounds popposal."

With the first six weeks now complete, the '77season is well underway for Roberts Bros. Cir-cus. With the exception of a few light days atthe beginning of the tour and some weak datesin West Virginia business can only be describedas terrific.

City Complains About CircusThe Chamber of Commerce of Gloucester (Mass.) has become the subject of sharp criticism

because it sponsored a small circus early last month. Complaints have come from local citizens, the City Council and the city's newspaper, the Gloucester Daily Times.

The Circus at the O'Maley Rink was packed, says the Daily Times, with "hundreds of peoplesqueezed together on the floor in front of the ring. Standees flanked the ring, often blocking theview of those in the seats. The aisles were clogged. About twice the building's 1,200 person ca-pacity were jammed into the building."

The newspaper contends that if things had beenset up differently the over-crowding could havebeen avoid. They suggested that in the futuretwo performances be scheduled, rather thanjust the one show.

It was a "rip-off, is the way that Bradley Peter-son describes his visit to the circus. There wasan "oversale of tickets," he said, which causedunsafe conditions and prevented some peoplefrom seeing the performance. He demanded anapology from the Chamber of Commerce andsaid, "profit made at the expense of the audi-ence is a disgrace, and with better planning itcould have been avoided."

City Council members report they have receiv-ed many calls complaining about the crowdedconditions of the arena. In a 6-1 vote they ask-ed for a discussion meeting with the Committeeon Ordinances, the Fire Chief and the Cham-ber of Commerce in an effort to find out whathappened and how similar problems could beprevented in the future.

Both Caroline Rowe and Ruth Burnham saidthey arrived at the arena about 20 minutes be-fore show time and were "shocked" to findthere were no seats available. Don't they reallyhave anv idea how many tickets are being sold, they asked?"However, uncomfortable accommodationsturned out to be the smallest disappointmentof the evening we were appalled at the con-dition and abuse of the circus animals. The ani-mals were not only exploited, but they wereabused. Their trainers showed absolutely nocompassion or understanding of those gentlebeasts. Some of the dogs were scrawny, neglec-ted old pooches, and our hearts went out tothe wild-eyed baby elephant who was constant- jly jabbed with a prong during his performance." ,

ENOC COOK, former RBBB Blue Unit clown, has been working clown shows for schools ontne Atlantic coast.

HEIDI WENDANY, juggler; FAY SNYDER'sanimals and the DARRELL FERGES, trampo^line act were some of the people appearing onthe Emmett Kelly, Jr. Circus date at Concord(Calif.) on Junellth. Others set for the showincluded: DAVE LINDEN, balancing, EARLTEGGE, announcer, TIM TEGGE, clown.

MiscellaneousThe Tom Mix Museum at Dewey, Okla., nowasks visitors for a donation as they leave thebuilding. The Museum is closed on Mondays.

CBS-TV reran their "Circus of the Stars" showon June 6th. It's the show which features filmand TV stars performing in circus acts.

Those circus coloring books produced by theSaalfield Publishing Co. of Akron (Ohio) arealready becoming collector's items since theyare no longer available.

The San Francisco (Calif.) area had three showslast week - American Continental, Europoramaand Emmett Kelly, Jr.

"The Times article covering the circus (lid haveone fact straight. The children who attendeddid appear to enjoy themselves, since most ofthem were too young to be aware of the condi-tions that the animals were working under. However, our family will never patronizeanother performance of that circus, and we aredeeply disappointed that our Chamber of Com-merce has rehired this callous, unorganizedgroup to perform here again."
