Nueva York es una explosión de locura urbana, que puede ser elegante o bizarra, con parques relajados y avenidas endiabladas, chic en ocasiones y aristocrática en otros rincones. Pero nunca puede dejar indiferente al visitante, que se fascina con esa mezcla de sentimientos y actitudes que presenta en sus calles, tiendas, y en el toque particular que le dan los neoyorkinos.

New York is an explosion of urban madness that can be elegant, or bizarre. It con-tains both relaxed parks and chaotic avenues, and is sometimes chic, sometimes aristocratic. But it never fails make an impression on the visitor, who is fascinated by the mixture of feelings and attitudes that fi ll its streets and shops, and the par-ticularly newyorker twist provided by its residents.

Si se cumpliera la profecía de John Lennon, ansiando un mundo sin na-ciones, cabría elegir una capital para un mundo unifi cado. Y perdón por

el tópico, pero esa ciudad tiene que ser Nueva York.

Uno de los puntales para esa candidatura es que es la Babel de la segunda mitad del si-glo XX y lo seguirá siendo en el XXI, como lo fueron Paris y Londres una centuria atrás. Sus calles refl ejan ese pasado de inmigrantes que la fueron edifi cando desde que los indios vendieron la isla de Manhattan por 60 dólares a unos holandeses demasiado avispados.

Luego vinieron los ingleses, que le dieron –como a toda la nación– la lengua y el sello de identidad; pero con la llegada de los irlandeses, italianos y judíos de Europa del centro fue cre-ciendo en forma explosiva. Y la expansión no fue sólo a las extensiones vecinas, sino también a los cielos, con la construcción de rascacielos

If the world were to live as one, as John Lennon dreamt of, and there were no countries, there might still be a need to choose a capital city for a united world.

And that city, forgive the cliché, would have to be New York.

One reason that supports this bid is its status as the Babel of the second half of the 20th century, a label it will keep well into the 21st, much as London and Paris were a cen-tury before. Its streets transmit the history of the immigrants who built the city, starting at the moment in which resident Native Ameri-cans sold it to some shrewd Dutchment for 60 dollars.

Then came the English who gave it –and the whole country– their language and cultu-ral identity. But its when the Irish, Italians and Jews from central Europe arrived that the city grew exponentially. The city’s growth wasn’t only horizontal, extending toward neighbo-

ring villages, but it also reached toward the sky: the construction of breathtaking skyscra-pers exhibited the opulence of a country that was already boasting of its global power.

fact dominated by Chinatown and its mar-kets, intense smells, and its denizens, who are always in a hurry. Latin American communi-ties surround the city in larger urban clots, while groups of African and Asian origin dot different quarters of the city map.

But there is also an elegant, lordly, and aristocratic side to the city, because even though New York lacks real nobility, it likes to pretend it’s there. Impressive buildings fl ank Central Park, among which is the Guggenhe-im Museum: an icon of the perfect blend of glamour, refi nement, art, and urban trends.

Further south lies the core of the pulsa-ting heart that is New York: Midtown Man-hattan and its collection of emblematic buil-dings and street corners made famous by hundreds of movies.

Pero también hay una Nueva York elegan-te, señorial y aristocrática, en una ciudad que aunque no tenga nobleza real, juega a poseer-la. Flanqueando el Central Park se levantan los edifi cios más impactantes que se puedan contemplar, con el Museo Guggenheim como ícono de la mezcla de glamour, refi namiento, arte y tendencias.

Y bajando un poco hacia el sur, el corazón del corazón: el Midtown Manhattan, con su co-lección de edifi cios emblemáticos y esquinas reconocidas en cientos de películas.

Es cierto que las mejores vistas de esta col-mena humana se contemplan desde la terraza del Empire State, la mole de casi 450 metros que domina con fi rmeza el horizonte de ras-cacielos. Pero ninguno de sus primos de acero y hierro pueden con la elegancia art decó del Chrysler, con esas gárgolas de águilas metálicas con el ceño siempre fruncido.

sonrisa profesional. El paseo comienza en el cubo de Apple, y hacia el sur, van desfi lando Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Prada y siguen las fi rmas. Y encajona-da entre los rascacielos, como una metáfora del devenir de los tiempos modernos, las agujas góticas de la Catedral de San Patricio, que dia-logan con la elegancia del Rockefeller Center.

Y a un tiro de piedra, el nervio motor de la ciudad, la locura y el frenesí de Times Square, con su colección de teatros, carteles lumino-

New York has to be felt and discovered in order to experience the rewarding experience of fi nding a city that never sleeps, as Frank Sinatra sang of; a metropolis with a unique identity, forged by a combination of dreams, frustration, opulence, risks, and pride.
