High Capacity Indexed Storage System

As the need for more storage capacity continues to grow it becomes increasingly important to have high-capacity archival storage that is organized for easy access without sacrificing high reliability. A hierarchical storage system can provide indexing capability to quickly find desired data records by layering higher speed memory technologies on top of the low-level mass storage media. The upper layers can provide indexing ‘pointers’ to the most heavily requested data to speed access. Additionally, in these systems, RAID (Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks) architectures can be used at the mass storage level to dramatically improve reliability.

The block diagram of a typical system is shown below. The Atmel MCU connects to a system level Ethernet port and controls access to the storage system. A Lattice ECP3 FPGA manages the storage hierarchy with the Micron eMMC memory storing the data indexes. The Silicon Image SATA to dual eSATA core storage processors implement the RAID storage functions.

Sensing systems are the eyes and ears of any automated control system. The location of the sensors is one of the more critical aspects of providing the data needed for intelligent control. Reliable power is also required and in many cases battery back-up operation is supported. In industrial applications, like process control, Power over Ethernet can also be employed to simplify power delivery to key sensors used near Ethernet controlled equipment. In some applications sensors use a wireless communications protocol to eliminate dependency on the Ethernet system and further improve reliability.

The block diagram of a typical system is shown below. The LTC LT4275 Power Over Ethernet Powered Device controller generates power for the sensor from the Ethernet RJ45 connector. The Exar XRP7724 Power Architect controller manages the overall power of the system and charges a battery that can be used during power outages. During normal operation the XRP7724 generates power for the board and uses a Micrel Ripple Blocker to minimize noise on the power lines to the MCU and RF interface sub-block. The Atmel SAM4E MCU captures information from the sensors and communicates results to the RF sub-system.

LatticeMico System (LMS):LatticeMico System is a separate tool to Diamond, but released with it. It has a signifi cant new feature combined with being an even more productive development environment for embedded systems.

Generate Platform Without Processor: LatticeMico System is now able to generate a Platform that does not include a processor. An example use is to create a Platform of peripherals (e.g. several UARTs). This is then implemented in the FPGA and wired to a discrete processor chip, thus expanding the processor’s peripheral mix.

New Enhanced Brightness 7” Display From the Leader in Low-power, Sunlight Readable LCDs The PQ070WS02 applies Pixel Qi’s unique display structure to minimize power and deliver unmatched usability and readability in all lighting conditions

Pixel Qi’s new enhanced brightness 7” display, the PQ070WS02,

addresses the widespread need for outdoor-capable, mobile

products. Pixel Qi’s patented technology combines a highly effi cient

transmissive optical structure with unique refl ective technology to

create a display that outperforms conventional sunlight readable

displays in power and readability. Pixel Qi technology is capable of

providing greater than a 10x reduction in power consumption versus

conventional 7” high bright solutions. This display allows the designer

to increase battery life and decrease system cost while providing a

superior viewing capability in the brightest lighting conditions. The

display is easy to integrate into existing systems and new designs

using the display’s standard interface and mechanical design.

The PQ070WS02 builds on Pixel Qi’s present 7” display, more

than doubling the backlit transmissive front-of-screen brightness to 400nits minimum. The boost in brightness means the PQ070WS02 has enhanced color performance

in all lighting conditions, while maintaining its low power refl ective capability. The PQ070WS02 is specifi cally designed with extended temperature capability.

Pixel Qi technology originated from the One Laptop per Child display and can be found in many “use anywhere” products. Pixel Qi technology has been deployed

Atmel SAM4L ARM-based Cortex-M4 MCUs Redefi ne the Power BenchmarkThe industry’s fi rst device to provide ultra-low power consumption bundled with unrivaled wake-up times, delivering the highest total application performance in all operating modes

The Atmel® SAM4L family sets new low-power and effi ciency standards for ARM®-based Cortex®-M4 microcontrollers (MCUs). Used in hundreds of millions of Atmel AVR® MCUs in the market today, the SAM4L family features ultra-low Atmel picoPower® technology and consumes just one-third the power of current solutions. The family is also the lowest power Cortex-M4 microcontroller-based solution on the market today, running at just 90μA/MHz in active mode. The new devices consume 1.5μA in sleep mode with full random access memory (RAM) retention, and 700nA in back-up mode.

With wake-up times down to 1.5μs from even the deepest sleep modes, the SAM4L family is ideal for battery-powered consumer, industrial and portable healthcare products. The devices take advantage of the numerous

picoPower power-saving innovations, including Atmel SleepWalking, Peripheral Event System, unrivaled wake-up times and intelligent peripherals. To reduce overall power consumption, the SAM4L devices feature peripherals such as the innovative LCD controller that includes ASCII character mapping, hardware scrolling and blinking support. The SAM4L family has two series available, the LS series and the full-featured LC series. There are 48-, 64- and 100-pin package options available in both QFP and QFN, as well as 64-pin WLCSP and 100-pin BGA package options for space-constrained designs.

The SAM4L-EK evaluation kit is also available with the SAM4L family to help accelerate designs. The SAM4L-EK includes an embedded debugger, power measurement, LCD, USB and capacitive touch. In addition, the SAM4L-EK measures the current consumed by the MCU through independent circuitry, and displays this in real time. The SAM4L-EK is supported by the Atmel Studio 6 integrated development platform (IDP), which features project examples, debugging support and other resources.

start-up and fault conditions. Their forward voltage is adjusted to share the load

currents between supplies. Unlike other sharing methods, neither a share bus nor

trim pins on the supply are required.

The maximum MOSFET voltage drop can be set with a resistor. A fast gate

turn-on reduces the load voltage droop during supply switchover. If the input supply

fails or is shorted, a fast turn-off minimizes reverse current transients.

The controller operates with supplies from 2.9V to 18V. For lower rail voltages,

an external supply is needed at the VCC pin. Enable inputs can be used to turn off

the MOSFET and put the controller in a low current state. Status outputs indicate

whether the MOSFETs are on or off. The load sharing function can be disabled to

turn the LTC4370 into a dual ideal diode controller.

LTC3626 – 20V, 2.5A SynchronousMonolithic Step-Down Regulator with Current and Temperature Monitoring The LTC®3626 is a high effi ciency, monolithic synchronous buck regulator using a phase-lockable controlled on-time, current mode architecture capable of supplying up to 2.5A of output current. The operating supply voltage range is 3.6V to 20V, making it suitable for a wide range of power supply applications.

The operating frequency is programmable from 500kHz to 3MHz with an external resistor allowing the use of small surface mount inductors. For applications sensitive to switching noise, the LTC3626 can be externally synchronized over the same frequency range. An internal phaselocked loop aligns the on-time of the top power MOSFET to the internal or external clock. This unique controlled on-time architecture is ideal for high step-down ratio applications that demand high switching frequencies and fast transient response. An internal phase lock loop servos the on-time of the internal one-shot timer to match the frequency of the internal clock or an applied external clock.

The LTC3626 offers two operational modes: Burst Mode and forced continuous mode to allow the user to optimize output voltage ripple, noise and light load effi ciency for a given application.

APPLICATIONS:

Targeted for the industrial, appliance, and automotive markets Motor and pump control in white goods applications Short circuit and overpower detection in audio applications Lighting applications General power supply monitoring Many industrial motors are powered off of 24 V rails ― the ACS711 would

be an excellent high side sensor in these applications

The Allegro ACS711 provides economical and precise solutions for AC or DC current sensing in low-side or high side applications less than 100 VDC sensing applications.

The device consists of a linear Hall sensor circuit with a copper conduction path located near the surface of the die. Applied current flowing through this copper conduction path generates a magnetic field which is sensed by the integrated Hall IC and converted into a proportional voltage. Device accuracy is optimized through the close proximity of the magnetic signal to the Hall transducer and factory programming at Allegro. The output of the device has a positive slope proportional to the current flow from IP+ to IP- (pins 1 and 2, to pins 3 and 4). The internal resistance of this conductive path is only 0.6 mΩ with proper PCB design as given in the datasheet.

The ACS711 can be used in low-side current sensing applications, although the terminals of the conductive path are electrically isolated from the sensor leads (pins 5 through 8), providing sufficient internal creepage and clearance dimensions for a low AC or DC working voltage application. The thickness of the copper conductor allows survival of the device beyond 30 Amps depending on the ambient temperature.

High Power TVS for Ethernet Interfaces3.3V, 4-line TVS Array with High Surge Immunity Ideal for Protecting Ethernet PHYs

RailClamp® TVS diodes are specifi cally designed to protect sensitive components which are connected to high-speed data and transmission lines from overvoltage caused by ESD (electrostatic discharge), CDE (cable discharge events), and EFT (electrical fast transients).

The unique design incorporates surge rated, low capacitance steering diodes and a TVS diode in a single package. The RClamp®3374N is designed to replace up to two components for board level GbE protection. Each device is designed to protect two line pairs. This is accomplished by routing traces through the device. When connected in this fashion, the device can withstand a high level of surge current (40A, 8/20us) while maintaining a low loading capacitance of less than 5pF. The high surge capability means it can be used in high threat environments in applications such as Gigabit Ethernet, telecommunication lines, and LVDS interfaces. The RClamp3374N is constructed using Semtech’s proprietary EPD process technology. The EPD process provides low stand-off voltages with signifi cant reductions in leakage current and capacitance over silicon-avalanche diode processes. It features a true operating voltage of 3.3 volts for superior protection.
