Mr Tim Ireland, CEO of the Aboriginal Child, Family and Community Care NSW State Secretariat (AbSec) and spokesperson for the NSW Family Matters Jurisdictional Working Group welcomed the NSW Government announcement commenting “The Minister and the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) should be given credit for opening their processes up to scrutiny through the appointment of an independent chair to oversee the review” “This review presents a significant opportunity to examine the system as it stands, and to learn important lessons to improve outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people and their families.” The Family Matters coalition is made up of 150 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, academics and child rights organisations. Nationally Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children represent over 35 per cent of all children who have been removed from their families, despite making up just 5.5 per cent of the Australian population. Family Matters campaign co-chair, Gerry Moore, said other states and territories should immediately follow suit. Mr Moore added COAG must also put in place a national strategy backed by concrete targets. “We know the over-representation of the Aboriginal children in out-of-home care does not stop at the NSW border. It is time all states and the Commonwealth properly address this problem with a comprehensive national strategy,” Mr Moore said. “We welcome this review, but we’ve had reviews before. Governments must ensure that this time it leads to concrete action.” “Unless there is an urgent intervention to strengthen families and redress the causes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child removal, the data shows us the already alarming numbers we see today will triple over the next two decades.” /ENDS For interviews or more information please contact Jess Brennan on 0421334918 / [email protected]. NSW review of Indigenous child removals welcome, should be adopted nationally

Sydney, Australia: All states and territories should follow NSW’s lead and call immediate reviews of over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children being removed from their families, the Family Matters coalition says.

Mr Tim Ireland, CEO of the Aboriginal Child, Family and Community Care NSW State Secretariat (AbSec) and spokesperson for the NSW Family Matters Jurisdictional Working Group welcomed the NSW Government announcement commenting “The Minister and the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) should be given credit for opening their processes up to scrutiny through the appointment of an independent chair to oversee the review”

“This review presents a significant opportunity to examine the system as it stands, and to learn important lessons to improve outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people and their families.”

The Family Matters coalition is made up of 150 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, academics and child rights organisations.

Governments must ensure that this time it leads to concrete action.”

“Unless there is an urgent intervention to strengthen families and redress the causes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child removal, the data shows us the already alarming numbers we see today will triple over the next two decades.”
