THE LYNN CAMPUS of North Shore Community College will be getting a long-awaited expansion soon with a new addition to the Thomas W. McGee Building on Broad Street. The addition will house four primary functions:

· Student Success Center – “one-stop shop-ping” for enrollment, registration, financial services and counseling;

· Center for Alternative Studies and Academic Assessment – teaching and learning resources, placement testing, credit for experience evaluation and a wide variety of academic programs that promote lifelong learning and broaden educa-tional opportunities for prospective and enrolled students;

· Instructional Technology and Distance Learning Capabilities – will offer a spectrum of

course-related technology services to support and enhance the academic expe-

rience so students can earn certificate or associate degree credits online; and

· President’s Office and Board of Trustees meeting room to establish leadership pres-ence on the Lynn campus.

The Lynn expansion project will include ten new classrooms featuring leading-edge technology, along with 2,300 square feet of student study space to foster collabora-tion and teamwork. While the construction and outfitting of this expansion project has been approved by the state, it is not fully funded. Therefore, naming opportunities will be available for donors interested in providing needed support for equipment and furnishings in the new addition. For more information on naming opportuni-ties and ways to help support this project, contact Tatiana Espinal, Director of Devel-opment at [email protected] or 978 739-5527.

33RD FORUM ON TOLERANCE EXAMINES HOMELESSNESS NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE held its 33rd Forum on Tolerance this fall, exploring the topic of homelessness as a social justice issue. This free event spanned two days, with a variety of speakers and presentations at both Lynn and Danvers campus locations and included panel discussions led by professionals who work with the homeless as they explored causes of homelessness, resources available and efforts to address the needs of the homeless. One of the panelists was NSCC graduate Peggy Andreas

IN THE YEAR SINCE DR. PATRICIA GENTILE began her presidency at North Shore Community College, she has had a schedule packed with events, meetings, partnerships and initiatives. On January 1, 2014, she began as the fourth president in the 50-year history of North Shore Community College, and the first female president. The formal inauguration swearing-in ceremony took place at the Lynn campus on September 19, 2014. In addition to students, faculty, staff, family and friends, the event was attended by Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo, Senator Thomas McGee, Commissioner of Higher Education Richard Freeland, NSCC Student Trustee Sean Reid, and Foundation Board President Joseph Riley, who each offered warm congratulations to President Gentile.

IN OCTOBER THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION held an event at Alfalfa Farm Winery in Topsfield to welcome new president Dr. Patricia Gentile to the college and kick-off NSCC’s 50th anniversary year. President Gentile met many grads from different years and offered thanks for their support. She stated, “You are all the reasons why North Shore Community College has grown over the past five decades and why this college is such a strong and meaningful asset in the North Shore community. I am so proud to join you in celebrating NSCC’s 50th Anniversary – our legacy, your future!”

The fall event at beautiful Alfalfa Farm fea-tured music by O’Carolan Etc, an Irish music trio that includes flutist and NSCC alum Cindy McIntyre. Attendees enjoyed food, music, raffles and the opportunity to meet the new president and connect with one another while raising funds for alumni scholarships. Luncheon held to HONOR VETERANSNORTH SHORE COMMUNITY College held a Veterans Day luncheon in November hosting NSCC student, alumni and faculty veterans, as well as veterans from the com-munity, to thank them for their service. Almost 100 guests were treated to lunch at the Danvers campus, where our current student vets had the opportunity to mingle with veterans of all ages from all branches of military service.

Among the attendees was Hardy Prince who served as a Navy fighter pilot in World War II. Hardy is pictured below at the lun-cheon where, as is customary, the oldest and youngest veterans in attendance cut the cake. Hardy, 95-years-old, is joined by student veteran Tyler Simpson, 22, who is in NSCC’s Fire Protection & Safety Technology program.

Larry Warner, pictured below, was a guest speaker at the event. The Vietnam vet shared his experiences and encouraged students in the audience to “keep going to school as long as you are able. I had a won-derful life and career and that wouldn’t have been true without education.”

33RD FORUM ON TOLERANCE EXAMINES HOMELESSNESS ’85, who received the North Shore Community College Distinguished Alumnus Award at last year’s commencement for her inspiring work with the homeless. Peggy described her role as a Family Team Nurse and her work with the Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program, and along with other panelists, discussed what can be done to help this population. Program events also included a screening of the documentary short No Place Like Home, which focused on youth homelessness in the Boston area and a local youth drop-in center. Personal stories from people who are or have been

homeless themselves added a personal touch, as well as a face and perspective, to this important social issue.

North Shore Community College regularly sponsors Forum on Tolerance programs free of charge and open to the public. The Forums cover a wide variety of social justice issues with the goal of embracing diversity, teaching tolerance and sup-porting a learning environment. For more infor-mation about the Forums on Tolerance visit www.northshore.edu/tolerance.

NSCC Receives FOURTH NATIONAL MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL DESIGNATION NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY College has received its fourth consecutive designation as a Military Friendly School by national organization Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel tran-sitioning to civilian life. The designation honors the top 20 percent of colleges, uni-versities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students.

“This coveted designation very publicly illustrates NSCC’s commitment to serving veterans and their families,” said NSCC President Patricia Gentile. “NSCC has a long tradition of providing education and training to veterans and current members of the armed forces who are seeking to learn new skills and translate experience in the military to civilian life. We are committed to providing the highest quality services, resources and programs to meet the unique needs of this vital and growing student pop-ulation,” she said.
