Welcome back! Enclosed is the February edition of the NRPS monthly newsletter. I am happy to report that this is not the only information that you will receive this month. Later this month, you will receive a copy of the NRPS Magazine. We plan to start with two issues this year with more to follow. A lot of people have worked very hard to bring this magazine back I want to thank them for all their hard work. The magazine is a prelude to the upcoming NRPS State Conference which will be held in Henderson at the Black Mountain Recreation Center. There are several great speakers at this conference. In fact, you are getting national speakers at a state conference price. The conference is shaping up to be one of our Society’s best in several years. I hope you will take time to register and join us this year at the conference. Also at the conference will be a prep course for the Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) Exam. There has been a great deal of requests from people wanting to take the exam, so Dr. Dan McLean and I put together a half-day course to help people prepare before they take the exam. I would encourage all professionals in Nevada to become certified. Taking the prep course is a great way to do it. I want to thank the many people that have helped make this a banner year for NRPS. We would not be where we are if it wasn’t for all the hard work by the many volunteers who have helped us with the many successful projects that we have accomplished this year. To each and every one of you, I thank you. I look forward to seeing you at the state conference in April. Thanks, Dirk Richwine, President Nevada Parks and Recreation Society

Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham is a 20 year-old wheelchair moto-cross athlete from Las Vegas, Nevada. Aaron was born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect of the spinal cord, which resulted in him having no usage of his legs. Aaron never let anything stop him. Aaron started riding at skate parks at the age of 8 . The first time was scary, and he fell, but he was never one to give up just because it wasn’t easy. So he tried again. From then on he was hooked. He has won a few BMX free style competitions, including the 2005 Vegas AmJam BMX finals, but for Aaron that is secondary to the joy of riding and hanging out with friends at the skate parks. Over the last six years Aaron has challenged himself to try progressively more difficult tricks; carving, grinding, power-sliding, hand planting, and spinning are just a few of his accomplishments. In 2005, he perfected a mid air 180-degree turn. Then on July 13th, 2006, he landed the first wheelchair back flip. Four years later, at a camp in Woodward, he landed the first ever double back flip (August 26, 2010). Since then, he has gone on to perform it live while touring with the Nitro Circus. As if this is not enough, on February 9th, 2011, he landed his very first front flip in New Zealand. Aaron enjoys showing young kids with disabilities that a wheelchair can be a toy, not a restriction. He loves helping younger children learn how to handle their chairs in new and different ways and teaching them a trick or two. Aaron has a passion for what he does, not only is it a lot of fun, but he wants to change the world’s perception of people in wheelchairs, as well as helping everyone see his/her own challenges in a new way.

Advocacy is a process of

strengthening public and political

understanding and commitment to

public parks and recreation.

Advocacy involves finding ways to

tell stories about parks and

recreation and how it benefits our

communities.

In Nevada we have seen a decline

in support for parks and

recreation at all levels.

Advocacy and NRPA Daniel D. McLean, Ph.D.

The National Recreation and Parks Association has long been a strong advocate for parks and recreation in this country. They have been actively involved in building national coalitions, working with Congress, and telling our story. When I lived in Iowa and Indiana I made the trek to Washington, D.C. to visit with our Congressional delegations. For many of them it was the first time a park and recreation professional have ever visited. Such visits were invaluable, but without the efforts of NRPA these visits would probably not have happened. They provided materials, background information, and instruction.

The NRPA Advocacy web site should be visited by every NRPS member. Its focus is on the national level, but its resources are helpful for all. Below is a list of services available to NRPS members, whether you are an NRPA member or not.
