Inspired by a strong localbanana marketing system owned and being run by the Krishnadistrict farmers, the National Bank for Agriculture and RuralDevelopment has ensured them the ‘scientific training cumexposure visit’ under it’s Capacity Building for Adoption ofTechnologyProgramme.NRCB Principal Scientist Dr. Kumar had shared his scientificexperience with the farmers, enabling them exposure to existingtechnologies meant for seed selection and post harvestingmethods. “Scientists mainly focused on soil management, cropmaintenanceand identificationofdisease.Theyalsoadvised thefarmers topreferdrip irrigationsystemwith fatigation tanks,”saidNetham(NGO)DirectorSureshVesamwholedthefarmers. On the other hand, another scientist Dr. Siva had displayedpreparation methods of value added products developed frombanana – banana fibre, drink, chips, wine and jam. The farmerswere told the export potential of the selected value addedproducts. The crisis-riddenpowersectorgotonlytwopercentofbudgetallocations.While the burden on power subsidies was Rs. 6,300 crore, therevenue shortfall was about Rs. 3,200 crore and by 2015-16,power subsidy billwould be aroundRs. 10,000 crore and powertariffincreasewouldbeanotherchallenge.Barring Rs. 5,000 crore for loan waiver, the allocation for theagriculturesectorwaslessthanthatof inthecombinedState, hesaid.
