NELSPRUIT
Greetings to all our readers
Well winter is here with the cold front well and trully entrenched today so its out with
the woolies and the boots and scarves to stave off the chill. May I prompt all our
readers that we do take so much for granted and working in this environment
definitely alerts one to the plight of others and those less privliged. Please remember
how warm you are and if you have jerseys and blankets to give away please consider
donating them to our organization that we may warm up as many families as possible
or consider supporting the many collection drives around South Africa in support of
Madiba’s legacy of 67.
Its been a busy few months with our 5th
Amazing Race having being our main fundraiser
for the first part of the year. And what a great
success it was. We had a fabulous turn out,
exciting challenges, tasks and a convivial end
point very kindly loaned to us by Hippo Water
Front for next to nothing. I would love to list all
our sponsors but the list is very lengthy due to
such generosity all round. The committee and
staff of our organization wish to thank each and
eveyone one of you and all the team players for
making it possible to raise R76 000.00.
Now it’s time to get out the golf shoes and the clubs, and for those of you who only
play socially or for charity this is your game all for a good cause. The field is open to
all golfers who support our cause. Our emphasis is to come and have a great day out
on the golf course, enjoy a prize giving, some food and a small auction. By supporting
us you will be enriching the lives of those less fortunate. We appeal to all of you and
your friends to join us by calling Penny Jane or Nomfundo.. See details on page 8.
Child Protection Week has come and gone and highlights of our awareness campaigns
and lifeskills programs are in this newsletter for your to peruse. Enjoy this update
from us.

In simple terms Child Protection Week means that the week is a dedication week for the protection of our children against child abuse, child violence and child exploitation. This awareness week takes place annually in the last week of May and run through into June. We touched based on three important factors about child protection •Children’s Rights and Responsibility •Violation of Rights by Children •The Importance of Education
As we all know every right goes with its responsibility: Children have the right to be heard and the responsibility to listen and respect others. Children have the right to enough food and the responsibility not to waste that food. children have the right to make mistakes and the responsibility is to learn from those mistakes children have the right to a clean and healthy environment and the responsibility is to keep the environment clean and tidy Children have the right to go to school and learn and the responsibility is to learn and respect others.
Abusing school property e.g. breaking materials, not following the rules and burning school property, disrespecting teachers and each other taking ownership of school property - basically this means children that take others for granted, thinking they are above everyone “Bullying” is unwanted, aggressive behaviour among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.
Education is a fundamental right. It promotes individual freedom and empowerment. Education is a basic human right that should be accessible to anyone without any discrimination. Education is the key to success. Education is a child’s first priority because that can lead them to better paying job. All children have permission to ask teachers if they don’t understand . Choose a career that you can do your best in Number of people reached by our staff during the course of the week.
During Child Protection Week we were able to reach 2 high schools with a total no of 1378 children during assembly namely Lihawu Secondary and Mandlesive Secondary schools in Pienaar 4 primary schools -Mbokodo primary school, John Mdluli Primary School, Sindzawonye Primary School and Nelsville Combined School. 3284 children were reached. Rob Ferreira Hospital, Msogwaba Clinic and Kanyamazane Clinic were part of the program too. Parents were addressed about the safety of children, knowing your child, being vigilant, knowing the unusual signs to look out for in the event of any behavioural changes. 175 people were reached at the clinics and hospital.
This presentation throughout the week at various institutions was based on the three aspects, namely Children’s Rights and Responsibility, Violation of Rights by children, and the importance of Education. The response was very positive as many of those reached did not realize the importance of schooling and education. Teachers committed themselves to ensuring the importance of child protection within the school premises.
Here is a link to a bit of alarming reading which can only serve to empower us all and ensure that we guard our children more vigilantly.

We are still appealing to you to consider supporting our endeavours to continue with BOYCHILD and GIRLCHILD awareness campaigns/lifeskills/training so that the outcome of what we started in 2013 can continue to gain momentum and bear bigger fruit. Our vision is to provide this ongoing program during the school holidays at various schools to various age groups in and around Nelspruit area. Jagaburns gave our boardroom a much needed makeover and also patched up the odd roof leak to ensure that the ceiling didn’t fall in on us unsuspectingly. Thank you Jacqui Burns and your team for a high quality job done.
