There are many different feedmaterials each with its owncharacteristics Some are easy tocrush some disintegrate intopowder some are very abrasive
Therefore according each type ofmaterial and each application itexists different type of crusher
In compression crushing (primary gyratory jaw crusher and cone crusher) the material issqueezed between 2 surfaces which getcloser to each others The crushing move-ment speed is between 05 ms up to 15ms
In impact crushing (Horizontal ShaftImpactor - HSI Vertical Shaft Impactor ndash VSI)the material is subject to shocks given byrotating parts (rotor equipped with blowbars etc) and thrown against metal surfaces The movement speed is from 30 up to80 ms
- Good shape end product - Low initial investment - High reduction ratioFeed material is reduced by - Initial impact with blow bar (60 ) - Impact with breaker plates (30 ) - Inter-particle collisions
Crusher sizes
There are many different crusher sizes The first two figures indicate the diameter ofthe rotor The last two figures indicate thefeed opening width For example NP1415has a rotor diameter of 14 m (55 in) and a
feed opening width of 15m (60 in)
NP impact crusher components
The main components of the NP Impactcrusher are the rotor rotor shaft framesblow bars and breaker plates
In small mobile machines (NP1110 andNP1213) there is only one breaker plate

Setting
The space between the breaker plates andthe blow bars only permits sized material toexit from the crusher Materials that are larg-er in dimension remain in the crushing cavi-ty until the correct size is obtained Then
they are discharged Normally the crushingcavity is limited by two adjustable breakerplates which control crushed product sizeand capacity
The closer the breaker plates are to theblow bars the smaller is the product size andthe lower the capacity through the crusher The smaller the setting is wearing is natural-ly faster
The further the breaker plates are from theblow bars the higher is the throughput ofthe crusher and the larger the product size
The setting is the distance between the tipof the blow bar and the breaker plate whenthe blow bar is facing the bottom breakerplate liner The measurement of the setting isobtained through the side access doors withthe frame closed
The minimum operation setting dependson the size the nature of the feed materialand the capacity through the machine
Adjustment of the second breaker platedefines the size of the product dischargedfrom the crusher Knowing the setting of thesecond breaker plate S2 and the feed materi-al size (the largest dimension) the setting forthe first breaker plate S1 can be calculatedusing the following formula
S1 = (S2 + Feed Material size) 4 + 20 mm

The selection of the liner typeand material for Impact crushersis fundamental to ensure itsdesired performance The linersmust be chosen according to the
material type abrasion foreignelements and size at the feedingand the required product so thatbest properties of differentmetallic alternatives may be used
Choices for material are manganese steelmartensitic steel and white chromium ironAlso a metal matrix composite productshave been added to the selection and theirimportance is remarkable
Continuous impact resistance is vital forfiner crushing applications and shock resis-tance is needed in primary applications andcases in recycling crushing area where metalscrap is entering the crushing chamber Wearparts have been designed using sophisticat-ed simulation methods and based on longexperience in wear part design
It is important to choose material thatunder normal operating circumstance offersthe best performance
NP Impact crusher contains mainly threedifferent groups of wear parts Blow bars
Breaker plate liners and Side wear platesFeed liners and Discharge lip for conveyor inMobile applications can be considered as a
wear parts The blow bar is the component of an impactcrusher most strongly subjected to mechani-cal stress It accounts for 60 to 70 of thewear costs
The proportion of wear per elements cor-responds more or less to contribution ofeach of them to the crushing action Therefore the wear is the most important onblow bars because the most reduction worktakes place when the particle are struck bythe blow bars See the attached table for

Metso blow barsIn general two cases of stress are distin-guished at the blow bars rim impact andcentral impact Favorable energy conditionsfor crushing are achieved with centralimpact if the particle can penetrate with itscenter of gravity into the orbit of the blow
bar The portion of rim impacts is higherthan for central impacts The consequence isa strong rounding of the blow bar edge Animprovement of the central impact can beachieved by an extension of blow bar heightand rotor speed adjusted to the conditions
Rotor speed plays an important role in thecrushing effect but in an other way on thewear of the blow bars In fact increasing thespeed increase the kinetic energy distributedto the material then we create more surfac-es able to wear the blow bars The relationbetween speed and wear can be summa-rized by the following formula
L = K Wsup2
Where L represents the blow bar wearK represents the specific wear factor andW represents the rotor speed
It appears that the wear doesnrsquot increaseproportionally with the speed it is a functionof the square of the speed We have then toconsider the life length in hours of the blow
bar depending on abrasivity of the material
When the blow bars are new and presenta plane surface and a sharp edge the impactis more violent the energy explodes thestones in many pieces When the blow barsare worn and rounded the stones are onlyscuffed by the blow bar edges They are less
fragmented and the energy of the impact islower

Manganese
This is mainly Metso XT510 manganese Thisalloy is used in primary crushers or crushersthat have tramp iron in the feed Manganesesteels will be used whenever very high shockresistance or some elongation is needed Theblow bar life is not easily predictable anddepends on many factors
Martensitic (Alloy) Steel
Martensitic steel will be used wheneverhardness and impact resistance are bothneeded ie in all the applications whereusage of white (chromium) irons can lead tobreakage Generally martensitic steel have ahigher lifetime than Mn steels in more abra-sive applications when the feed size is below900mm It is used in primary and recyclingapplications
White Cast Iron (Chromium)
White irons are used when the shock level israther low and the castings rather thick Feedto the crusher must be well prepared as faras top size and must be free of tramp ironBecause of the brittle nature of this alloytramp iron will cause catastrophic failure ofthe blow bars This material is used in sec-ondary tertiary and asphalt recycle applica-tions where there is no tramp iron
Composite solutionMetal Matrix Composite (MMC) consisting ofmetallic matrix (steel or cast iron) and ceram-ic alloy The ceramic part consists of particles
spread across the wear surface These com-posites have the effect of combining thevery hard surface of ceramic with the usefulmechanical properties of cast iron or steel This combination makes the whole structuresufficiently tough to resist to breakage dur-ing service
Compared with standard alloys this solu-tion considerably increases the partsrsquo lifespan and the tonnage crushed by each setof parts especially in more abrasive condi-tions Metso MMC offering includes Xwinreg

When Blow bars should be changed
In order to avoid damage to the rotor blowbars should be replaced before they areworn through The wear limit ldquoDrdquo is shown inthe illustration above When changing andturning around blow bars follow the instruc-
tions in the Nordberg NP Series Impactcrusher instruction manual
Blow bar replacement
Blow bars are reversible When one face isused the blow bar can be turned around touse the other face This procedure can onlybe done once
Blow bars may need to be changed orturned around earlier if wear profile is dis-torted Unevenly worn blow bars maydecrease production Reasons for distortedwear profiles might be incorrect feeding orfeed gradation
Recommendation is to change all 4 blowbars simultaneously However in some appli-cations can be used the slotted configura-tion The slotted configuration (two wornblow bars and two new blow bars diametral-ly opposed) will produce a discharge curvewith a smaller amount of fines
Breaker plate replacement
In order to maximize the lifetime of thebreaker plates Metsorsquos machines breakerplates are protected against wear by severalsame sized breaker plate liners Because wearprofile isnrsquot same in the whole crushing
chamber breaker plate liner positions can berotated Wear is higher on the bottom of thechamber
If a few liners are worn you are notobliged to change whole set of the linersYou can either change liners places orchange just the worn ones

tions in the Nordberg NP Series Impactcrusher instruction manual

S1 = (S2 + Feed Material size) 4 + 20 mm

The selection of the liner typeand material for Impact crushersis fundamental to ensure itsdesired performance The linersmust be chosen according to the

L = K Wsup2

Attaching system depends on the linermaterial- In the Manganese liners the attachingsystem contains a bolt that is at the wearside of the liner
- In the Chromium iron liner the hexagonalscrew is attached directly from the oppositeside to the liner
Side liners
The side liners protect the frame and 2 typesof hardness are available (400 HB and 520HB) There are also 2 thicknesses available(20 mm and 30 mm)

L = K Wsup2

This is a MMC blow bar consisting of hardceramic particles on the wear surface in amartensitic steel matrix This composite hasthe effect of combining the very hard sur-face of ceramic with the useful mechanicalproperties of steel These (martensiticceram-ic) blow bars can have two to four times thelife of standard mono-alloy blow bars- Recycling industries (primary)- Concrete- Asphalt- Quarries (primary)
- NOT suitable for slag recycling (too abra-sive) or limestone (lifetime too long risk ofmetal stress)
Recyxreg Martensitic steelCeramic
This is a MMC blow bar consisting of hard
ceramic particles on the wear surface in a
new martensitic steel matrix Ceramic inlay isdeeper and wider than standard Xwin andwill provide higher lifetime These are highperformance blow bars for recycling applica-tions- Recycling industries (primary)
- Concrete- Asphalt- Quarries (primary)- NOT suitable for slag recycling (too hard)or limestone (lifetime too long risk of metalstress)
Xwinreg White iron (chromium)Ceramic
This is a MMC blow bar consisting of hardceramic particles on the wear surface in achromium iron matrix This composite hasthe effect of combining the very hard sur-face of ceramic with the useful mechanicalproperties of chromium iron These (chromi-umceramic) blow bars can have two to fourtimes the life of standard mono-alloy blowbars- Secondary application in quarries and grav-el pits- Asphalt (when no risk of unbreakable parts)
- NOT suitable for primary crushers or
extreme abrasivehard materials Carbidebased matrix accepts near to no shocks
neoXreg (Xwinreg III) High Chromium Iron
Ceramic
This is a MMC blow bar consisting of hardceramic particles on the wear surface in achromium iron matrix The quality of theceramic inlay has a more durable wear resis-tance than standard Xwinreg Designed spe-cially for the gravel pit or quarry applications- Secondary application in very abrasiveworking conditions (quarries and gravel pitssteel slag)- Asphalt in some cases (when no risk ofunbreakable parts)- Main target is in applications where Xwinregwhite iron gains no lifetime improvementagainst monoalloy solution- NOT suitable for primary crushers or low tomiddle abrasive conditions
